Corney Fell is best left alone unless your car is of no value. I used to do the run every day on the way home in the Corney Flyer and while it is generally quicker when you've got a clear run, it can actually take longer if it's busy. Of a morning on the way to BNG, I always go through Whicham Valley and the journey takes about 32-35mins to Yottenfews. On the way home, I could go over Corney Fell and it still take me 35mins to get home (tourists, farmers and inconsiderate SAAB drivers). I leave it alone now I've got the Furby.

The fell-road aside, for me these are the best bits of road...

(a) the journey from Gosforth to Broughton (especially the Holmrook S-bend at the end of the long straight)

(B) the Ulverston road from Grizebeck (the Barrow road is crap now it's 50mph)

© the Ambleside - Coniston - Broughton road when there's no farmers, Sunday drivers or caravan draggers on it!

As an aside, came back home thru' Ambleside on Sunday and actually saw some thicko drive the wrong way round the one-way system. Doh!

I've always been a fan of the "Bas" dual carriageway, westbound. Particularly when its empty and you can make full use of the 2 lanes.

The A5086 is a craking route too. Once managed Sheep centre to Egremont in 12 mins, in my old polo saloon! Had a BMW in fron which knew the road better than I did, so took his lead.

The one time I've had the Corrado up that way (its about 240 miles from my house) I got stuck behind some old guy in a pork pie hat......I was not amused.

Phil

the Bass Lake dual carriageway is one of my fave bits of road..... if you can get a good run through it :D

My bf always grabs the sides of the seat when we come to that point, cos he knows I'm gonna have a play through the twisties, just can't resist! Wouldn't care, but I take it a bit easier when there's someone in with me

Mind you, it's more fun to go through there in the puma than in the octy ;)

I had a hairy moment through there with these cheapo tyrs - the back end stepped out!

Drifting in a front wheel drive...OMG!

You guys are all talking about my local roads and i couldn't agree more. Used to do Cockermouth to Sellafield (and back!) every day for work, along the A5086 then turn off onto Cold Fell (not much room for over-taking on there but we had 3 or 4 spots where it was just possible  ). Also if you turned off at Lamplugh the road to Keswick thru Whinlatter is a great drive (if you're not stuck behind a Sunday driver, farmer, OAP etc!:thumbdwn: ) Speaking of Keswick another favorite of mine is Keswick to Windermere, its a proper drivers road and no mistake  with a couple of Dual Carriageways thrown in for good measure. But if you want a challenge you've got to check out Hardknot Pass, the road is vertually vertical in places and you'll discover the true meaning of hairpins andhow good your sphinkter control is when you've got a mountain out of one window and a cliff out of the other  .

well i can agree that this is a good road i live at gilgarran, and i work at m-sport cockermouth so if i am in the mood either morning or night i tend to have a blat on that road i like the bit just before you get in to lamplough coming from cockermouth where the back end gets all light and you just throw it in to the right hander the dips in mint like

As far as I remember Egremont to Cockermouth would be about 18 miles- I used to work in Cleator Moor in the 80's- once did the Moor to Cockermouth in under 15 minutes in an MG metro- that was before we rolled into a ditch on the Cleator Moor-WHitehaven Road taking a right hander with a full petrol tank- seveal metros were written off in similar circumstances about that time

Used to use these roads all the time. Never really liked the A5086 though - The hedges are too high and so you never really get good visibility. :(

Some of the fell roads (Cold, Corney, Birker) are much better! :D

This is my default test road when buying a car. The best car i've had on it was my old shape leon fr it stuck through the lamplugh rollercoaster like a dog having a dump. The octy feels a bit rolly and light through the stretch between lamplugh and the mockerkin cross roads. I would agree about harknot/rhinos passes not for faint hearted though. You got to pick your gear and keep going. My pug 306 td was great on it. 2nd gear and just plod away past many bmw with it clutch burning up there. But theres nowt worse than being stuck behind a city boy who has just found out his driving skills are restricted to donuts on mcy ds car park. But its funny cruising past in a 150000 mile battered pug td with the wife dog and kid in.

I like the Hardie Pass. I'm happy if I can get a clear run and treat it like the Goodwood hillclimb! Bloody annoying though when you catch up with Mr/Mrs Careful, and they won't pull into a passing place - so bloody annoying!

Egremont to cockermouth road ( also known locally as lamplugh road) is a belter! We used it during driver training.
