  1. Sorry I meant the ribbed plastic intake manifold housing at the front of the engine. I'm considering a bluefin remap. I understand you 've had on too Brad. What are results like? From what I can make out from the maps, the torque increases greatly between 2-3000 rpm, and that should really improve the driveability of the car.
  2. According to the bluefin site, my car, MY up to sep 2010 ( Mine MY week 33 2010) can use the bluefin self programmer to program the unencrypted ECU, I like this idea as you can put it on or take off as you please. But I'm sceptical as I have done some searching on this site and it seems a possibility that my ECU may be encrypted and thus I wouldnt be able to use the bluefin as advertised, but would need a visit to decrypt the ECU first. http://www.mybluefin.co.uk/search?make=33&fueltype=3&model=142&variant=2104
  3. This is much much cheaper and you can DIY the same job over and over again. http://www.plccenter.co.uk/en-GB/Buy/BERRYMAN%20PRODUCTS/0116
  4. As far as I am aware, you can self remap unencrypted ecu's off the shelf. But if ECU is encrypted it needs to be removed and map applied in a workshop?? But I stand to be corrected by the knowledge that is the forum
  5. I have just bought a MK 2 FL1.8tsi with a build date of week 33 2010. It is a 10 reg. I am considering remapping but as the build is around the beginning of the use of encryption of the ECU so I am unsure which one to go for. Is there any quick way of finding out whether the ECU is encrypted?
  6. Just an update on my car. I had a good dig around the engine bay and I noticed something strange. My car build date is week 33 2010 The build dates on the timing chain cover and the ignition/injector housing plastic covers both have build dates of 31 10 2013 ??? And they both look newer than the rest of the housings in the engine bay. It look likes both of these have been replaced and I'm wondering what work was carried out for this to be necessary ??? (Timing chain fail and valves injector system changed???) All the information I have is the service manual and there are no indications or workshop notes in it suggest anything happening. The car runs as sweet as a pea so I'm not to concerned with anything being wrong with it.... But I am curious.
  7. Thanks Brad. I've actually linked up to all your old posts, there's a mine of useful information in them.
  8. Just to clarify the above. The CDAA engine is one of the family of EA888 engines. The engine I have, and Snowman has, is a Gen II with a timing chain, and thus at risk of timing chain tensioner fails. However, failures of the chain tensioner seem to be few and far between in the 1.8 Tsi version of this engine. If my engine sounded like this... I would be worried but mine sounds sweet as a pea.
  9. I have a CDAA engine too, what's the difference between CDAA and the EA888 engine, apart from the obvious timing chain problems? Edit... CDAA is an EA888 engine.... just researching further info
  10. This is great info... if you have any other tips re servicing I'm all ears, as I'm going to be self servicing mine. Where did you get this info from by the way, is there a font of knowledge anywhere? I have been looking for a some sort of workshop manual for the 1.8 tsi but not found anything relevant.
  11. Yes Snowman89 a 2010 registration (we say 10 reg etc as that is what our plates say in UK). It is a Mark 2 Facelift model. It has done 65K miles and been nicely run in for me by the only previous lady owner. I am very impressed with this engine although the turbo could cut in a tad earlier to prevent lag. (Maybe a remap will sort that out.) The Laurin & Klement trim is great and the grandkids can drop as much mess as they like over the leather seats with little concern.
  12. Just saying hello to this subforum. Traded in my trusty Fab II 3 1.9tdi for a 10 reg 1.8 tsi L&K. (Now have grandkids (plural) so back seat filling up) Any other 1.8 tsi owners got any links to useful information?? Much obliged n all that.
  13. I have a late 2009 1.9 tdi series 2 III remapped to 140ish. Its gruff at times but excellent torque and acceleration. Just change the oil regularly and it gives supreme reliability....... Its just goes and goes and goes ad infinitum. You can't buy a new one though. Mine is last model date.
  14. Mines about 135-140 too,(Shark map) no problems at all with clutch etc. Makes it a very interesting drive
  15. I would go for the Fab 3 1.9tdi PD.... which seems to be missing from the OP's list?????
  16. I got hold of a 59 plate Fabia 3 1.9tdi with only 17k on the clock last October. Remapped it and now its approx 140 bhp. There's no way the 1.6 CRDI engine would touch its performance now and I love the unruly grunt/noise of this engine. My boy who is 28, keeps begging me to sell it to him as he has the 1.6 105 lump in his, he is forever making excuses to borrow it. If you manage to pick up a similar one...theres no other choice really, and the roomster is a good alternative choice.
  17. I have a Fabia 2 III and found the rear speakers to be awful, rattly and distorted when any bass applied. Replacing the rear woofers with some decent Pioneer 2 way about £30, solved the problems as the tweeters are fine. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Pioneer-TS-G1721i-17cm-Dual-Speakers/dp/B006NU55EC/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top The front speakers are fine, as is the Dance head unit. And yes they are riveted in place, just drill them out. Other than this you need to spend hundreds to make any significant improvement to the overall system. Not worth it IMO.
  18. With respect I Disagree... rear 16cm speakers are poor quality and vibrate/distort bass terribly. Replace them with some £30 a set of panasonics fix's the problem.
  19. V good value motor for the money. I got a level 3 1.9tdi 59 plate (one of the last few 1.9tdi's made) 6 months ago for 6.5K It had only done 17k miles and I've put 5K+ on it now. Its got plenty of grunt.... and more available if you remap it like I did (approx 140 bhp) making it into a surprisingly nippy motor that always returns well over 50mpg.( And 60 if you drive it carefuly.) The engine and whole package is rock solid. Personally I've had zilch bother. Oh... and its cheap tax and insurance to boot. Only downfall from my point of view is the lack of USB or MDI so my ipod is always on shuffle via the aux input. Oh and the rear speakers are rubbish... so I replaced em.
  20. GAP insurance is a real con... I always laugh at a dealer when they try and offer me it, and they look so disappointed when I refuse.... I wonder why??????????? GAP insurance on a 2nd hand motor ffs... they were having a laff. Mind you... if it was written off in an accident, you could get your money back of course
  21. Have to disagree with this, I wouldn't swap my 'one of the last' 1.9 PD Tdi engines for a DPF strangled CRDi disaster. These engines go to the moon and back... who cares about a little diesel clatter that you cant hear with the Radio turned on anyway.
  22. Doesnt seem to work too well with the CR engines either looking at all the posts, and DPF regen problems EDIT I plan to keep my 1.9 PD for as long as possible TOO
