  1. What should the fine be for someone with winter tyres on driving well beyond the capabilities of the tyres and themselves who come sliding into me or someone I care about when I'm driving on summer tyres perfectly adequately in the conditions? Doubled, I think. Sent from my XT1039
  2. Columbus is a DAB unit? Also, I read that it integrates with a maxidot display but the SE has an LCD. Would this limit the functionality a great deal? Sent from my XT1039
  3. Hi, The one who must be obeyed recently had a Fab 3 courtesy car which had a DAB touchscreen stereo in it which the mrs thought was rather good. In her Fab 2, she has a Swing with an AM reception problem (as described elsewhere). What options are there for getting something similar to what is in the Fab 3? It doesn't really matter whether it's 3rd party or VW OEM (like from a different model). And yes, I can imagine that I'll need a 5 TeraWatt aerial amplifier for the DAB. ta,. D
  4. I'm in the West Midlands. If the car is parked adjacent to my Mk 2.5 Focus which, incidentally, has a FSB for the radio ground wiring (poor reception/interference) that I've not done anything about yet, I get Five Live on 693/909 kHz without any problems at all. And just static in the Skopedo.
  5. Sometimes. I driving quick on a track, if I can help it.
  6. I used to go a lot faster on these roads myself but then I decided that I wasn't getting to work much quicker and it was costing me more money hence the driving like a grandad of late ;-)
  7. Thanks for the info. So, if I have no error codes but zero AM reception, I guess a trip to the dealer is on the cards.
  8. I always thought that a vehicle was most efficient around the 50MPH mark. I drive to work on B roads with very little stopping and if I drive around this value in the 1.2 TSI Fab, I get around 56MPG and in my 1.6 Focus I get about 47MPG. If I were doing 70MPH, those figure would be lower.
  9. OK, so I finally found my OBD2 adaptor. Ironically, it was in the cavernous glove box on the Fab. So, I read codes and there are none. Do I take it that the codes relating to the radio need to be read via another tool or mechanism? Or, that there aren't any to report ?
  10. What would be classified as early? Pre 2011? Any lesser known issues on later engines? Sent from my XT1039
  11. What is the rise in pedestrian injuries attributed to? Summer tyres or people driving around in SUVs (or wannabes), thinking that they are invincible and having more accidents as a result? There was a well documented report of increased numbers of Americans dying in accidents due to a perceived higher level of safety afforded by SUVs and similar and Britain is generally ten to twenty years behind the US... 12. A. I'd not put just two on. I know someone who did and ended up in a field backwards as when they went around a corner the rears had no grip and let go completely. Fair comment and just what I expected. The thing is, did they have the "I've got an SUV and are invincible" winter tyre mentality and were going too fast for the conditions? B. Why would you spend money on that when there are tyres made to do the job much better? Especially as super thin weird tyres would not really be approved for your car and would cause other issues. Winter and true all season tyres are no more expensive than normal summer tyres. I think the reason is that if I can do something for 40 quid that's better than doing nothing and which is some way towards what performance I'd get for spending 100 quid a corner then I'd like to understand the implications of that decision. i.e. If these are tyres that I might only use for 3 or 4 days a year, and which might perish before they wear out, I'd be interested in knowing how much to "invest." C. You can run different size rims, there will be tyres for smaller rims that closely match the originals in total rolling circumference. EG: 225/45R17 is almost identical to 205/55R16. I hadn't thought of that but that's very useful info!
  13. OK, just out of interest, if you run winter tyres.... A. Do you have to change all four it can you just change the fronts? B. Back in the old days, I had what were effectively remould rally pattern tyres that were nice and thin (for my Mk 2 escort) & I carried a trolley jack in the bit for changeovers. Since i believe that remoulds are no longer available, can you buy some cheap, thin tyres for cutting through snow rather than winter spec tyres? C. I have a Focus on 17" wheels as well as a fabia on 15". Is it OK to run, temporarily, with different sized wheels - I.E does the abs ECU complain about sued differences due to rolling circumference?) What I mean is buying some generic 16" steel wheels to use on either... Sent from my XT1039
  14. Aye. I'm feeling a little deflated about this whole tyre saga. Sent from my XT1039
  15. We've gone around in circles on this tread...er...thread. Sent from my XT1039
  16. I'll do this as soon as I can find my OBD2 adaptor! Sent from my XT1039
  17. That's a quality picture. I can imagine him telling his pals at the pub (or on a forum!) that chains/socks are a waste of money. Or maybe he prizes steering over moving? Sent from my XT1039
  18. Have we reached a consensus then? Put winters on if it makes you feel better despite there being no legislation to require it but don't be surprised if you can't get to work because the roads are blocked by those with summer tyres or who are just incapable of driving in the conditions. What about keeping a set of chains in the boot? Best of both worlds? Sent from my XT1039 using Tapatalk 2
  19. It's like the winter tyres in my Mk2. They just carry them on the train and the extra weight does the rest. Same applied back when railways first came about.... They always carried a good stock of Victorian winter tyres. Sent from my XT1039 using Tapatalk 2
  20. If you don't think they have a vested interest, and you believe anything a manufacturer says, maybe you'd consider a 4k or even an 8k telly? ;-) I've been driving 30 odd years and the only winter tyres i had are some remoulds with deep treads that I kept in the boot of my MK2 escort if it was going to be snowy. Mostly, just the extra weight helped - I think I put them on once. I think the biggest problem with the argument is that unless everyone has them, it simply doesn't work because it doesn't matter how well you go in the snow if the roads are blocked by people who can't get about. Sent from my XT1039 using Tapatalk 2
  21. You don't think that the tyre manufacturers have a vested interest in selling as many tyres as possible and, therefore, may construct arguments to support this? Sent from my XT1039 using Tapatalk 2
  22. Fault on the charger? Fuses can get stressed over time so maybe it's to do with in-rush current (when item is first plugged in) or similar? I would suggest an ammeter but it's probably too slow to see the problem as I doubt your chargers are pulling ~15A continuously. I suppose the other cause could be a chafed wire causing an intermittent short to ground. Sent from my XT1039 using Tapatalk 2
  23. Hi, *bog I thought the AM reception on my Focus was bad but the 2014 Fabia is worse. I like to listen to radio 5 live for the football sometimes but this is not possible in the Skoda. Ironically, this is a known issue on the Focus and there is a published fix for it but what is the solution for the fab? The FM reception seems OK. Anyone help with this, please? Thanks Sent from my XT1039 using Tapatalk 2
