  1. I’m looking at a mk4 VRS estate to replace our Passat, a couple of questions for those who posted earlier in this thread and hopefully still have their cars!

    - for early cars, have software updates cured or improved the frustrations?
    - have later cars cured or improved the frustrations?

    Thanks.

That's not a bad idea at all. Would save me the hassle of undoing the electronic side of it.

How much do you want for the crash beam?

It’s on eBay at £45 with no interest despite being the cheapest. £30 posted any good?

Will have a rummage see if I saved the grommet as well.

  3. I’ll second was @Offski said re dropping the sump plug after pumping. Not sure what engine you have, but I have the CFFB engine in both Superb and a 2011 Golf.

The Skoda is a bit new to be servicing myself but with the Golf, there is still over a litre of oil that the Pela can’t get. So you need to be dropping and replacing the sump plug anyway.

  4. @trakhat that’s good to know. Finished the wiring last night, and coding this evening on mine. Away this weekend then towing the car trailer and friend’s kit car across Kent next weekend.

The relay setup you describe is exactly what the Westfalia kit has between the battery distributor post and the control box behind the NS boot trim. What the control box does with it, or if it just passes through unused I do not know.

That's weird that the Westfalia kit doesn't use the same setup as the OE one. On the Skoda kit I installed (p/n EEA 800 103 EL) everything was plug and play, though swapping the pins for the brake pedal signal on the BCM connector was a bit fiddly. Fuses 8 & 9 supply power to the control module and the trailer lights; fuses 43, 44, 45 handle the power to the caravan (one of these runs directly to the pin on the trailer socket but I can't recall which offhand). Everything runs down the driver's side of the car and plugs into the BCM or the driver's side fuse panel under the dash.

I assumed that as Westfalia is OEM for the B7 Passat it would be the same for these. I was very frustrated to find they aren’t.

On on the plus side, the boot trim and sill trims are much easier to remove without breaking on this than the Passat!

The fact that integration with other vehicle systems at least points towards this being a proper OE style setup rather than a bypass relay bodge.

After that it depends on what electrical kit was installed in the car. Does it have a 7-pin or 13-pin connector for starters? If it's a 13-pin, are all the pins present in the socket?

On the fuse panel, fuses 43, 44 & 45 should be populated if it's set up for sending power to the caravan if it's a Skoda kit or one of the better third party kits: are these present?

If you have access to VCDS or similar, check if you can connect to control module 69: this is the address used for the towing controller. If it's present, go into coding and see if it's coded for the trailer power outputs to be switched on.

This is about as much as you can do without dismantling the car's interior. The control module is located behind the boot trim on the left hand side of the car: removing this panel is a pain in the arse, requiring the rear seat to be removed on that side followed by the D-pillar upper trim, the top part of the boot liner, the boot lip trims and finally the inside panel. The hardest part is removing the side bolster of the rear seat without breaking the clips holding it in.

I have just installed a Westfalia kit into mine, it came with 2 parts, the 13pin CANBUS towbar wiring exc. the charging function (part number 321600300153), and the Optional charging cable (called extension kit part number 300028300113).

The 13pin towbar wiring (ie exc. the charging) has fuses in 4, 43, 44, 45.  So the fuses are not definite identifier.

I have not installed the extension kit for 2 reasons:

    - it runs down the near side of the car so is a second lot of trim to remove.

    - the relay control wire crimps to a switch (ignition) 12v.  I dont like crimp connectors and haven't investigated if there is a spare spade terminal on a suitable point of the fuse box to use instead.  The main feed connects to the m6 battery feed distributor so that isn't a worry.

Ah, now you are getting me worried! Think I may be better getting someone to fit it for me

When I did mine I just tucked the cable behind the black rubber trim next to the a-pillar trim rather than the trim itself so I wasn’t anywhere near the airbag.

My camera unit has both front and rear cameras with parking mode enabled which has helped last week when someone left a note on my wifes Merc saying" Vauxhall Corsa CS54*** has hit your car"
Sd card out of camera and look in the parking file and there's a wee 30 second clip with a blue Corsa CS54***  with reverse lights on hitting the front bumper of our car..
    Now awaiting insurance details....

What camera have you got Delboy and is it any good? I’m looking at dash and at the moment and would prefer either a single or linked front and rear cameras rather than just having 2 separate cameras.

Never had an AMD map so I cannot comment on them, I have however travelled to Mansfield (Shark HQ) with 3 cars... they are THAT good.

You could also use one of their local dealers in Sidcup or Rochester.

I have spoken to AWTuning their Sidcup dealer who was very helpful and knowledgable.  I'm only umming and aghhing because I have used AMD before and I prefer the concept of a vehicle specific remap on the rolling road, but they are more expensive to start with, and add on the rewind first and it is nearly double the cost.

One of the changes made in the update is to increase EGR use under certain operating conditions. If your EGR is already clogged up (and on the road to failing) it is likely to fail after the update since the gunk will prevent it from opening wide enough.

A remap on top of the update may or may not change this, depending on the skill of the tuner. Some tuners are offering a rollback facility where the engine is reverted to an older map which does not have the update applied.

It depends on the type of remap that you get.

Some load a map developed for your engine type onto the car, in the case of Shark Performance the map they load is on the latest pre-fix software version, so if you get a Shark Performance remap the fix will be undone.

Others adapt the current map whilst the car is on the rolling road (eg. AMD Tuning), so if the car has had the fix, you will have the fix version remapped.  AMD were unable to tell me whether they undo any of the changes implemented by the fix.  On the basis that more power = more fuel = more soot this is potentially the worst case for stress on the EGR.

I will get our (EA189 fixed) Superb remapped later in the year when I renew my insurance with a different provider who will accept a remap.  I have yet to decide whether to have the Shark remap, or to do the Shark rewind then an AMD remap.

I have named these companies as they are the 2 I am considering to do mine, not any other reason.

  11. We went over to Wales this weekend in the Superb, 70mph (set on cruise which I have added to maxidot) is about 2130rpm so a bit lower than I thought.

The journey up at a 75mph cruise early Saturday saw 46mpg average.

70mph cruise on the way back today saw 54mpg.

Both on the computer, will calculate when I refill.

Both were pretty clear runs, so I suspect the gearing is hampering the mpg significantly for 5mph to make such a big difference.

I had Sachs as original option and for 200 km I replaced them after 160K km with KYB Excel - G for comfort ride.

Probably a stupid question, but why is that hub a 4bolt arrangement when these use 5bolt wheels?

Doesn't sound quite right to me either - at 75mph, my 1.6 D manual would be doing  2000rpm in 6th. That's 75 on the cars speedo - if doing a true 75 measured with a satnav, its about 2100 rpm.

Got a long drive Saturday and Sunday so I’ll double check, but I’m fairly certain that’s what I remember from because I was surprised it was so high when we first got the car.

DSG should give better MPG on the motorway, higher top gear than manual box I belive

I’m not sure about this, at 70mph our Superb is doing 2200rpm.  Our previous Passat (manual 170), and current Golf (manual 140) are both doing ~1750rpm at 70mph.  I’d have thought the lower revs would give better fuel economy.

Unless you are suggesting the Manual Superb is even lower geared and would be doing more than 2200rpm at 70???

Editted to say both Passat & Golf are Bluemotion Tech models.

The full document (from erWin) detailing maintenance schedules for the Superb II for all engines, models and markets runs to 165 pages. It includes a checklist for each of the items listed by @HughGabriel above at

I have never bothered with the maintenance tables functionality on erWin: it's flaky as hell unless you're running an old version of Internet Explorer and just not worth the effort of trying to figure out what it's doing within the limited time window of a subscription. If you're going on there, grab the pdfs for everything: all the information needed for repair and maintenance is in there and downloadable for reading/printing at your leisure.

With the benefit of hindsight I agree with that, and dont try to do it on an ipad!

In the final few minutes of my hour I did manage to get the pdf service manual (166pages here) to download.
