I seem to recollect that when I was comparing the R-Line to my S3 L&K, the L&K had some of the nicer 'extras' as standard - but I can't remember what they were now.

    - Rear cam

    - Ventilated front seats (hadn’t realised that was now standard!)

    - heated rear sears

    - electric tailgate

    - heated windscreen

    - park assist

They seem to be the main things. Although I’ve just spotted that the L&K no longer has tri zone climate, which it used to, but the ventilated front seats are probably a bigger gain there.

I like the quote 'You can also now only get the Arteon in petrol form as the 2.0 190 engine with DSG' as mine (now cancelled) is still showing as build week confirmed - but no idea when that is. It's only 11 months since it was ordered!

Yes, that is pretty ironic and I didn’t twig when I wrote it. I guess they’ll just build it and send to a dealer as a demonstrator. Someone on the Facebook group who’s been waiting a year has just had his delivered today. It’s a shame they’ve dropped the 1.5 in a way, it’s a surprisingly decent engine in the car although the 190 makes more sense.

  2. Learnt to drive in an Austin Mini, about 1989, forget all other specs. Passed in January 2005 and had no car for a number of months, being a poor student.

    1. 2006 - 94 Ford Escort 1.4 cheap as chips - about £500 IIRC - and £10 used to get me between Birmingham and Cardiff at the weekend and the rest of the week around town.

    2. 2008 - Y Reg Ford Puma 1.6. Brilliant car and great fun. Bought off my sister in law. Engine died 6 months later, put a reconditioned one in. That died 13 months later (just out of warranty).

    3. 2009 - 57 Reg Skoda Octavia 1.9tdi Elegance. Replaced the Puma, baby was due in 3 months so needed a dad car anyway. Fantastic car, did about 90k in it over 7ish years.

    4. 2016 - 66 Reg Nissan Qashqai 1.5dci. First ever new car. It was fine but never really loved it and after the Octy it always felt small. Written off by a drunk driver on Good Friday this year, leaving me with no car for 3 months while I waited for...

    5. 2019 - 19 Reg VW Arteon 1.5tsi Elegance DSG. Had it 7 days and been abroad on holiday for 3 of them but I love it.

    Not a very exciting history!

I see that the SE spec Arteon starts at £31,845 and guess you get the 148bhp 1.5TSi engine for that money. My Superb had Sat Nav and Canton included in the price I quoted so was hardly poverty spec. Just struggling to see how VW can charge £8,000 more for what exactly?

Well, I can’t work out what the SE spec actually is. It started appearing on things a few weeks ago but I can’t actually find it on VW website, so I’ve no idea what it does or doesn’t include. It’s probably not entirely fair to compare a 3 year old price either, as the prices have gone up since then.

Arteon Elegance and R-Line Arteon trims are virtually the same, R-Line just has larger wheels, different body styling and slightly different seats. So this is the Elegance trim vs SE Superb trim:

    18" alloys vs 17"

Nappa leather seats, heated in front vs cloth and not heated

    Predictive ACC vs ACC

3 zone climate vs 2 zone

    Full LED self levelling headlights

12.3" virtual cockpit vs analogue with B&W trip computer

Part electric driver seat vs manual seats

Full size alloy spare vs tyre repair kit

    interior ambient lighting vs none

    Lane assist vs none

    Privacy glass vs none

That’s what I can remember, think it’s all about correct. It’s clearly a much higher specced car than the Superb SE trim so not comparable.

You can also now only get the Arteon in petrol form as the 2.0 190 engine with DSG which makes it £35k list price. The equivalent L&K is nearly £300 more on list price, but that does have a few more things as standard than the Arteon. SE L seems the most directly comparable trim, and that’s £30.5k. Show me any VW that isn’t a couple of thousand more than the equivalent Skoda. Whether it’s worth that or not is entirely up for debate!

I’d be interested to know what you think of the latest Mazda3 Astina .

Apparently they intend to go more upmarket with their pricing and I can understand why........it’s pretty swish inside.....cool classy minimalist.

    On road in Australia <£25K

It looks nice, don’t know a great deal about it to be honest. Nice to see manufacturers making some attempt to change up designs a little.

My last Superb in 2016 an SE with a few options was £23,650 and it may not be as pretty as the Arteon but it had a very similar engine (1.4TSi manual) could achieve 50mpg every day on my commute and would regularly give over 700 miles from the 66 litre tank. Try buying (not leasing) an Arteon for under £24,000 NEW.:mmm:

There’s no doubt that the Arteon is more expensive than the Superb (IMO it’s also nicer) but comparing it against the almost base spec SE is a bit unfair. The two are leagues apart in terms of standard spec and the L&K is a much fairer comparison, like for like, at which point the money doesn’t seem so different.

  5. Can’t believe I’ve only just found this thread - ordered mine 6 months ago and it finally arrived last Thursday.

Yes, it’s Urano grey but I quite like it. I also liked that it saved me £25 a month on my lease.

FWIW I think it looks much better than anything else similar out there, no doubt I’m a little biased and it’s all subjective anyway. Yes, it’s mostly a Passat in a fancy frock but it is a VERY nice frock. Try speccing an Audi to make it equivalent and you’ll find it suddenly costs a silly amount more.

I’m completely in love with it :inlove:

All good about what I would expect, be even better if it were manual. Average 46 suggests some steady open road cruising though. Be nearer 40 mpg with 35mph averages that most have to put up with.

Sure, this was m40 and m25 (Coventry to Gatwick) so there was a fair amount of stop-start traffic on the second of those. Might be slightly better economy in a manual but it would’ve been a much less comfortable drive too.

  7. Well, having just taken delivery of a VAG (not Skoda) car with the 1.5 TSI engine and DSG, I think it’s a bloody brilliant combo and can’t recommend it enough!

The DSG seems really smooth in all situations, from manoeuvres on the driveway all the way up to motorway cruising, and everything in between. The switch from 2 to 4 cylinders is virtually imperceptible - if the display didn’t show me I’d not have realised. I haven’t noticed any hesitation when trying to pull away at junctions or roundabouts, either, which is another apparently common gripe.

The car has done under 300 miles so far, so it’s still bedding in, but I did manage the figures in the picture without any effort at trying to be economical and using ACC for 95% of the journey. And that’s on a car which weighs something like 300kg+ more than an Octavia.

I followed the steps @MarkyG82 posted at the start of this post and it went smoothly. Surprised myself. Just got to give it a go @maffyou. Let me know what you think of the EZ products, £75 seems a good price.

That’s the plan for Friday, although weather might scupper those plans if the forecast is right. Will update then.

  9. As another complete novice, it looks good to me @64VRS !

My EZ cleaning set arrived yesterday from Amazon, can’t believe £75 for 10 cleaning products, a mit, some cloths and 2 buckets with grit guards! All looks great. Excited and slightly apprehensive for Friday now...

I was thinking more the mass of a bike, I'll agree speeding can be just as dangerous, but I would think most fatal accidents involving bikes it's mostly the biker's that die.

I'd also argue a lot more people speed than drink drive which would skew the statistics slightly. Impossible to measure the ratio of speeders who have a fatal accident against drink drivers who have a fatal accident. While you get a fair few people who are happy to acknowledge they speed; you'd have to be a special kind of idiot to brag about drink driving.

(Sorry to OP for derailing his post.)

Yes, pretty much agree with all of that actually. I think that people are comfortable with speeding, as I said before, because they both underestimate how dangerous it is and overestimate their driving skills. Which makes it more dangerous than drunk driving, in a sense, on the sentiment you put forward: (almost) everyone knows drink driving is a big no no. People generally know it’s bad so generally don’t but the same isn’t true for speeding where people think it’s ok and they’re good enough drivers to do it.

 Agreed but manslaughter not murder because there’s no premeditation, but your actions result in someone’s death.

As fir the OP, if you’re concerned take it in to the dealer and ask them? From what I’ve read I highly doubt it’s the gpf.

I'd argue a drunk driver is much more dangerous to other road users than a couple of bikers speeding.

Interesting. This US report suggests they are equally as dangerous, in terms of fatalities: https://www.forbes.com/sites/tanyamohn/2017/07/30/speeding-its-just-as-dangerous-as-driving-drunk-new-report-finds/amp/

Looking for UK data, DUI doesn’t make the top 10 causes, but speeding (and speed related) causes make the top 10 three times: https://www.regtransfers.co.uk/content/common-causes-for-road-accidents-in-britain/

Don’t get me wrong, as someone who recently had my car written off by a drunk :swear: I’m not saying driving whilst drunk is ok, but people vastly underestimate the seriousness and danger associated with speeding.

Theres a whole gov document here but it keeps crashing and reloading on my phone so I haven’t been able to check its content.

I also thought the kit looked ok @maffyou but it does look light on microfibre towels. So I’d suggest you get a few more of them at the same time, if it helps I generally get through 5 per wash. (3 on bodywork, a different one for glass and a different one for wheels).

Thanks for the tip. I’d thought this so bought a pack of 10 400gsm that had good reviews on Amazon. Also bought a BH clay bar (seen recommendations on here), EZ ceramic wax and Glart applicator pads. My car’s being delivered Thursday and I have Friday to myself to have a play - going to drive it to my folks house to do as they have a much bigger and more spacious driveway!

  13. Great thanks @Wardy Appreciate the feedback, glad that as I thought it’s a decent starter kit and will get me going, more importantly it’s not a crazy outlay if 6 weeks down the line I decide that I really can’t be arsed with the whole detailing thing myself  My pressure washer came with a foam sprayer actually. I’m sure it’s not brilliant but it will do. I used the washer itself and it cleaned the patio up a treat a couple of weeks ago without too much effort.

  14. Hi guys, I’m a slightly reluctant noob when it comes to car detailing but my new (non-Skoda) car is arriving imminently and as I now own a pressure washer I thought I might give this all a go, do a better job and save myself £12.50 on the hand car was every few weeks.

So I've read up loads on the process, seen the Car Cleaning Guru etc but was feeling a bit lost when it came to all the products and cloths etc that I actually needed, so happening upon this on Amazon I was pretty pleased... https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07N2ZWM12/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_mC5jDbMKHX3WG

To my untrained eye this looks like a pretty comprehensive starters kit and I’ve read people on here recommending EZ products - thoughts? Seemed like a decent price to get me started too. All responses appreciated!

wyx087 I get your point about ICE not driving the wheels, but would you find a PHEV acceptable?

A study also recently showed that hybrids were more expensive overall than both ICE and EV so as @wyx087 post above, plus they cost you more. Can’t find the link to the study, sorry, was only reading it end of last week.

  16. 5 hours ago, OldBoyScout said:

So EVs are probably not as good for the environment as we might have thought, but diesel cars may not be so bad.

Are they better than ICE is the important question? The evidence suggests that they are. Pretty much everything we do as a species has an environmental impact of some description, surely the point is to reduce that impact as much as sensibly possible?

    5 hours ago, OldBoyScout said:

I just have concerns about the politicians pushing us down the EV route when it may later turn out to be not necessarily the right way to go.

Mum not sure politicians are really do much at all to push EV uptake (and nowhere near as much as they should, IMHO). They’ve slashed the grants, as you mentioned yourself, and increased road tax for hybrids. It strikes me they’re doing very little to push EVs.

    5 hours ago, OldBoyScout said:

A bit like how it was with diesel, except that to me it doesn't look like diesel is as bad as it has been painted, given modern improvements in emission control.

The biggest issue with diesel was the falsifying of emissions tests, coupled with financial incentives to buy diesels for people who shouldn’t have been choosing a diesel because they do low mileage. In fact, the issue was more that petrol cars were demonised when for mainly city drivers they’re better as their emissions are less directly harmful to humans.

    5 hours ago, OldBoyScout said:

I like the Octavia Scout, as occasionally I need to go on unmade tracks where a bit of extra ground clearance and underbody protection is good to have. I also like it for driving from Norfolk to the West of Scotland for holidays, a distance of over 500 miles, and don't know of any EV that would suit me as well.

Yet, is the missing word on your sentence. There’s no reason why an EV can’t be designed for off road use, but there’s probably pretty limited demand as it stands. And on that 500 mile journey, presumably you stop at least once on the way? With a rapid charger this would be quite doable. I recently timed how long our coffee and toilet stop at a services was - 40 mins almost, without any dallying around, just how long it took. In that time I’d have been 80% charged if I had an EV and good to go again.

We need better infrastructure that’s for sure but transition takes time.

all batterys have a shelf life though and the batteries aint cheap

you need to factor in this cost, you could always sell it before it needs a new battery i suppose, but people will get wise to this and cars will be worth alot less

Also worth remembering that battery costs will continue to fall as sales increase, economies of scale and all that. New technology is always more expensive for early adopters but prices generally fall over time.

There was a pretty big owner study of Tesla’s which found that over 160,000 miles degradation was less than 10%: https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/electrek.co/2018/04/14/tesla-battery-degradation-data/amp/

Most people never own a car anywhere near that long, and how many people own an ICE that long without more than minor wear and tear maintenance?
