Hang on, solar PV and heat pump but no home battery? Heat pump are said to be roughly cost parity if using price-cap electricity, of course it's eye watering costly if on Agile and priced like yesterday. But if add a larger than average sized battery (15 kWh or bigger) and right time-of-use tariffs the cost should be manageable. Actually, there's Octopus Cozy and should be cost effective when used a smaller ~5 kWh battery to only cover its peak period. I agree, there's no good reason to link electric prices to gas, and different parts of the country shouldn't be paying similar prices. Unfortunately I personally don't believe heat pump is financially viable before then.

Come on now. Why the extreme defensive response? Let me remind you that you have not pointed out any reason why you might want to own EV. So there is nothing to read over last page or so. Care to expand on this so everyone would know exactly what you are saying? What areas that we must learn? Don't forget well cited references to back up your assertions. Let's be reminded that even with ZEV mandate over next few years, EV is by no means mainstream until after 2035. Cars are kept on the road for a long time.

My 2023 MINI Cooper S Level 3 Electric leased from Motability which will be with me for 3 years & now a 2021 MG5 as a dog wagon.
I believe the left is power meter. The needle is current power. The available power (yellow bars) are not all lit up, showing reduced max available discharge power. I am guessing white segments on the right are battery meter, it is 7/8 charged? All EV need to display available power because as battery changes in temperature and state of charge, it also changes both available discharge power and re-gen power. The BMS (battery management system) works out safe maximum based on a lot of parameters.

It's extremely simple. You don't like EV's because you feel left out. That's completely okay, solutions are being developed, nothing is being banned right now. But you also don't need to defend ICE vehicles. There is nothing what so ever gained other than showing lack of reading comprehension. Why do people need to repeat themselves? Do I have to continuously repeat myself so that I don't get painted as unbalanced: I've never, ever, said EV is the right solution for everyone right now. I'd also not recommend people without home charging capability to jump in to the deep end. By continuously pointing out improvements in electrical generation and EV, I'm trying to bring awareness and challenge outdated views. Nothing more.

Just like ICE manufacturers, you are using 1 metric to measure everything. We now know CO2 emission from combustion isn't the whole story. For life expectancy improvement, there are many factors. Air quality is a very small part. There is also huge advances in medicine and health care, improvement in overall living conditions and reduction of manual labour.

Indeed it is what you said. But that is utterly completely missing the point. What about that 10 years old Euro 5 vehicle that is still driving around? ALL EV will get cleaner, unlike ICE cars, every single EV will have its pollution reduced over its lifetime. Including 10 year old ones, will get cleaner as electrical grid cleans up. As do ICE vehicles. Let's make it really simple, we have: - pollution A: tail pipe emissions. - pollution B: tyre particulates - pollution C : brake dust Which is worse? Do you think during the phasing out period in 1990, people had the same comments? PM2.5 particulates emitted by cloths, walking, cycling, and per passenger mass transit is far less than cars. Volcanic eruptions, fire, explosions and wars are not everyday occurrence. In those instances, most people would cover their mouth whenever possible to avoid breathing in harmful air. Only volcanic eruption and forest fire are natural, everything else is man-made and most of it are only present since industrial revolution. Just because those man-made pollution had always been there in your lifetime, why does it need to continue to be there for future generations?

Existing older ICE cars can never get to the same level as brand new cars. A 10 years old Euro 5 diesel will never see the same level of emission as brand new latest ICE. Whereas a 10 years old EV has its per-mile emission reduced to a fraction compared to the day it rolled off production line, because the grid has cleaned up. And the grid will continue to clean up as time passes. Every single EV ever produced, regardless of how old, will see the same level of improvement. Doesn't need to buy/manufacture newer cars.

These new labels indicate which charging plug fits in your EV It's one of those useless labels pointing out the already obviously visible plug socket. L indicates up to 900v, Enyaq isn't a 800v car, so not sure why that's there....... The 60 kWh battery Enyaq is said to do 120 kW, 20-80% in 30min: ŠKODA Enyaq iV (2021) Charging Guide | Pod Point

How big are batteries on those cars with 50 kW max? On my first-gen Leaf, with right battery temperature (mild summer's day, not too cold, not too hot, it hasn't got thermal management), 15min could recover over 40%, as long as plugged in below 30%. It's a significant portion of the battery. Another possibility is that the sign for max stay hasn't been replaced yet for the new chargers. That is the typical restriction for petrol station parking spaces. But I think easonable time frame start from 30min, 60min is about right middle ground. 90 min is on the leasurely side. Remember this is DC rapid charging. It wouldn't be speed restricted by the car's on-board chargers. Your Enyaq should have a figure for rapid charging speed. 100 kW? It should also have a quoted time for typical 10-80% with ideal charger in ideal conditions.

Keen eyes. Yes...... and told me to F off when he was loading something (a few seconds after that photo was taken, was probably behind that car) and I loudly stated the obvious fact this car wasn't charging and that car is. The old AC posts did not have any restriction on parking and not charging, but there's lots more so there is always some spot that can plug in. Now there's less and the wider spaces are more enticing for entitled tools. Not sure which one is better for EV adoption.........

I don't understand this 4 vs 5 thing. Why is the smaller number launching later but physically bigger? I'd thought R5 is closer in size for Zoe? Haven't seen much info on the R4 supportin V2G. We also need the charge points to be made available. But either way, there's 2+ years before I will make any changes, wait for they become second hand and new V2G chargers to be more wide spread. No point buying brand new EV since 2023.

Been to the Colindale car park today: Very poorly lit car park, they only had half the lights on. But the charging bays were lit up brighter than outside today. All 50 kW, I think perfect speed for typical dwell time over 1 hour. Old Chargemaster AC posts had been removed.

Out of those 3, the BYD Dolphin interests me the most as local runabout. The MG4 is more of a family car size for different purpose. I'm not sure, do people cross shop between likes of Golf and Polo? This late in the game, I think all EV's should have V2L at very least. Even the super cheap Dacia Spring has V2L. The eC3 is a let down on this regard. Renault 5 would be my pick for V2H and local runabout, and best of all it's extremely compact, saves driveway space.

Exactly. Then they can offer incentives to keep the car plugged in with head room in the battery left for flexibility. Like Intelligent Octopus Go, but with an initial baseline charge. People just need to get used to doing it every time parked up.

The key is not every EV will be charging all the time, and having ability to plug in is more important than quickly charging. This is the flexibility of EV's, when it's parked, it can charge whenever it is able, doesn't need to be straight away at maximum. 63 amp across 3 phases, assuming 240v, is 45 kW. 45 kW over 24 hours gives 1,080 kWh. 1,080 kWh is good for ~4000 miles. So unless cumulatively, all the residents' total mileage is consistently more than let's say 3000 miles a day to give lots of leeway. The shared incoming supply is not going to be a problem. This is the same with rapid charging hubs. 350 kW charger will not deliver anywhere close to 350 kW for vast majority of the time. I really like Kempower and Tesla method of sharing charger capacity across multiple ultra-rapid stalls. You keep saying this, but never provided any solid evidence. It would be the resident's lifestyle choice to live that way rather than us arm chair keyboard warrior's problem. You are assuming direct replacement of ICE with EV and thus all those replacement must also use petrol station model. EV can charge anywhere. A large portion of EV will be able to charge privately, either at home, at workplace or other private parking. A smaller portion of EV will be able to charge kerb side as per many solutions already seen. Only a further smaller portion of EV will need to rely on public rapid charging infrastructure, refuelling like liquid fuel. The portion divide are my view, but I largely see these 3 category. Not relying on rapid charging is important, mustn't think with same petrol station mentality. A smart charging EV is a valuable asset to transition to renewables.

It is also very important to top up all cars to 100% on AC to ensure cell balancing. Some vehicles don't do cell balancing when on DC rapid, or report 100% but still doing cell balancing (my early Leaf does this). So the result is not representitive. It is similar for some "tests" where they drive certain distance and then "top up to 100%". The battery isn't as simple as the fuel tank, there is a lot of considerations and background work done invisible to the tester unless they are monitoring via OBD. One cannot just take energy added after one single run using partial battery as de-facto figure. This methodology requires multiple runs to remove occational battery self maintenance consumption biases. In another words, ICE car journo have no idea how to test EV's. I'm mightly confused by Renault line up, seems like the 4 is physically bigger than the 5? Which one is the smallest 5 seater? I think that is the 5 isn't it? I also have my eye on the Renault 5 as wife's replacement vehicle many years down the line when its V2G/V2H is available as mass product. And industry work out whether CCS DC V2G works better or Type 2 AC. Renault 5 is Type 2 AC whilst VAG cars are CCS DC based. Have you seen what FSD v13 can do?
