  1. The various parts of the ESR system typically maintain control and balance by braking individual wheels as well as the haldex clutch (in scout and 4x4) distributing power. Any braking will be lost energy hence decreased MPG. I don't suppose it would be a measurable amount unless you're doing some off-road rally driving. I think the ESR light should flash on the dashboard every time its taking some action. From my long experience with my Mk2 4x4 that is very rare thing - even when driving on the snow. So unless that light is flashing a lot then there won't be much braking or loss of MPG. But what do I know - always looking to learn something new.
  2. Good question John. It probably is quite straightforward but I haven't a clue. I'm always scared of snapping bits off but it seems if you can just pull up panels in the right places they pop off. It might need the shift gaiter pulling off to get to screws underneath but I'm guessing. There have been posts about mods to the centre console which included getting it off. A great source of info is "Sashas Octavia vRS" - she is always swapping bits around. Maybe someone else will pipe up with how to do it. Of course if its a warranty issue then its not for you to fuss over.
  3. Mine stayed lit. When I was running on my spare the tyre pressure warning came up and I could feel the car braking every now and then. I presume circumference was different (maybe was a bit soft). Anyway I turned off the ESR and the switch light came on and stayed on. I think you may have a loose connection or duff bulb in the switch. (I'm a 64 plate but the 15 build so I'd expect functionality to be the same) I'm interested in your findings about fuel economy. I spend my days in eco mode and drop into sport when I feel I need to 'go'. I think the coasting in neutral can only help. With winding roads around here you have to be patient and the car is so comfortable it really helps me do that. But then.....
  4. Hey - why the sigh about the wizard? Ynys Mon has a wonderful legacy of wizardly things doesn't it? Not just Bards and Seers and poetry competitions There is such a mysterious, deep and rich culture which may be lost from clear sight but has never left these lands, especially Ynys Mon (Ynys Mon is Anglesey for the anglo-saxons) Would having a number plate with Welsh flag, Y Ddraig Goch, not help, or is that too tacky?
  5. Link to DVLA doc showing regional identifiers. https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/698421/inf104-vehicle-registration-numbers-and-number-plates.pdf CY rules.... or CX, CW. They are the North Wales (Bangor) plates. Knowing the different regional plates makes driving around more interesting. I'll let Sasha explain why 50 miles can make a great deal of difference around here.
  6. But you're the 'mods wizard', won't seem right for your chariot to be under a different signature. Maybe you can put a nodding wizard on the dash just to keep that theme going. You can carry out more mods in a single evening than I can eat sausages! It just ain't natural. WoOOo WoOOo (scary type noise)
  7. You got likes on Tuesday. Same road, same car - previous likes apply. For new prizes we at least want some different views..... aren't those mountains big enough?
  8. I bet your 245 horses beat their hooves across it pretty well. In a gentle whooshing sort of way of course. Welsh mountain roads under Mediterranean skies - what more could a Octy man ask for.
  9. @Pittsy You need to sort your underwear out mate! Maybe you have some mighty impressive gear!
  10. I recognise a great sense of humour when I read one. Not that there was much sense in what you said...... and actually not a huge quantity of humour either. Still I identified with something there.
  11. Hhhmmm.. came up nicely with a bit of detailing. This one looks really fab! I had a lid-less mk1 GTI for a while - like a go-cart so loads of fun.
  12. Yeah but your golf doesn't get out much these days does it?!
  13. Not claim. By the time you take off excess I think you may well lose more in increased premiums let alone the problem Stuski says about the impact of any future claims. When they keyed your car it was if they reached in and took notes out of your wallet. Its gone now - but it is just money, more will come.
  14. To me the highway code is very very clear on this issue: "Rule 268. Do not overtake on the left or move to a lane on your left to overtake. In congested conditions, where adjacent lanes of traffic are moving at similar speeds, traffic in left-hand lanes may sometimes be moving faster than traffic to the right." It says first - do not undertake. It can't be any worded any clearer. Then it gives an exception for when the road is congested and the 'lanes of traffic' (not a single car) are moving at different speeds. So maybe we are all right. It is not 'illegal' as if it was it would be prefaced with "MUST" or "MUST NOT" (page 1 of highway code) but the code clearly says not to do it.
  15. Yikes - you did a full wheels off detail and forgot to fit them?! That would certainly reduce the rolling circumference - best get those wheels back on before you grind your discs right down.
  16. Cracking carport you have there - well equipped by the look of it!
  17. ..... or the 184php diesel 4x4 DSG Scout with better comfort (ind. rear suspension and higher profile 17" wheels).
  18. The Scout 4x4 offers another option, though won't suit everyone of course. Higher ride height, 17" wheels and independent rear suspension makes for very comfortable ride though won't hold so well when driven hard round the bend. Only diesel TDIs - either 150 manual or 184hp with DSG box. The DSG is so much more than 'auto' of course. You will pay a premium for all this but if used that differential reduces. Not many about other than 1yr olds ex dealership.
  19. I am familiar with what you've quoted from the Highway Code: "In congested conditions, where adjacent lanes of traffic..." But what you are describing is a single car hogging the middle lane "for no reason". This is why its such a pain as you are meant to pull out and pass on the right. When its busy this isn't easy and it's understandable to pass on the left - with great caution, but if the other car then pulled left and hit you I think you'd be seen as the one at fault. To quote you Oli: "if the moron is sat in the middle lane for no reason and travelling slowly.... " Thats my understanding anyway. Penguin17: Very subtle of the Superb to be using different car outlines in differing circumstances. Is it some engineers comment about Tiguan drivers?
  20. "..perfectly legal.." ??? I didn't think that would be.
  21. @Leevan71 - bit of a micro climate up there in Derbyshire? Its been pretty warm in most places these last few days. If I noticed your car with that number plate I'd think it was a bit of a sleeper Excellent pic - I like the perspective.
  22. The Octy is so dam clever I can't tell when it's being clever. Like I said, as a driver I think I'll be out of a job soon enough. We'll end up sat around on our playstations reliving the fun of 'yesteryear'.
  23. Hahahaha.... 3 exhausts and 4 batteries!! That must have put you into a padded cell for a while. That is totally crazy. I guess the rust would be from your tears! The suspension on a Marina was a work of art though... chap went to design bouncy castles afterwards.
  24. Ah - sorry. Sense of humour got lost in cultural translation. (not that there was a lot of sense in it, or humour come to think of it) We used to joke about Friday afternoon cars where the chaps in the factory had been out for a drink and weren't really paying attention so car gets lots of minor problems. With modern production techniques a lot is automated and there is much better quality assurance (great youtubes of skoda factory). I was remembering the days of British Leyland cars back in the '70s and '80s. I think the build date would only get down to a week number anyway. Of course it could have been the week before or after Christmas. Don't know the answer as to being best to hang or change car. Its a bit like the probability of flipping of coin. After 6 heads you think its bound to be a tail this time but actually the odds are always just the same. Another car may be just as likely to have a fault. Are your local roads very rough? Maybe its you and your environment and not the car which is the cause.
  25. YIKES! What was your car's build date? - bet it was a Friday PM. Hope that it's all pucka now and nothing else is wrong - just f.w.t.. [PS. This a very old thread you just re-activated]
