I've got exactly the same problem, done all the work same as you, but I've got some extreme creaking as well as knocking. Just about to change ball joints (which were new on the wishbones 🤬), I'll let you know if that's the problem.

Hi troops, fed up with my columbus head unit going in the huff for days on end then teasing me wirh a few hours service all the time...(come to think of it, sounds familiar 🤔 🤣) So looking for recommendations for a decent replacement unit, nothing much over 250 if pos. Would like it to do all the stuff that columbus does. Except mimic my wife😁 Cheers in advance 👍

Thanks for the informative reply, Chimaera, I'm going to temporarily stuff the bushes with grease to see if the creak quietens then hopefully it should give me an idea...don't want to go to all that hassle if it turns out like yours! My worry is it's something steering related, which would be more serious with our upcoming trip to Holland next month. I'll let you know how I get on. Thanks again 👍

I realise that this is an old post, but is it quite a big job to remove the subframe? I've got exactly the same symptoms as you, and after replacing the wishbones, drop links (twice!), shocks, springs and top mounts, I'm resigned to the fact that it's probably the damn bushes. But reading this post hasn't exactly filled me with confidence...

Thanks for that. It actually seems quite reasonable considering a scrap box is 250- 7/800! (They average around 400 inc vat and delivery) Also, the quotes I've had so far I haven't checked the compatibility, as per chimaera's post previously, so they could be 'any old vag'! (rude joke in there somewhere...🤣) I'll give that place you found (thanks for that) a wee call and get a rough idea. Cheers

I don't suppose anyone could give me an idea of what kind of cost is in a reconditioned gearbox, and a good source? Otherwise, back to the scrapheap challenge!

Hi, need some help. My gearbox in my mk2 170 estate is making godawful rumbling noises in 4th and 6th, been advised it's bearings etc and cheapest option is a 2nd hand box. Trouble is codes and compatibility. The service book says the code is kzx. My question to those in the know is, if I get a gearbox from another vag engine, will it fit mine? Same mounts etc? Tia
