  1. The quote was speaking of an infernal combustion engine and was complete b******s. I bet the number of forum members whose cars have less than 100 hp could be counted on one hand, 10% is laughable even with the "up to".
  2. 57.7 mpg, 46 (ish) mile round trip across country B roads with some city driving at destination, at least 5mpg more than ever before and it was from a cold start and 5.5° temperature all the time, my previous mpg figures were summer ones. Driving away from the cold start the fuel consumption shows after I believe its 200m, possibly 300m, its normally showing 18 mpg at that point which is already impressive but today from a cold start it was 25.4mpg and at that point I was selecting 6th gear whereas usually it would have been 5th and had to be held in that gear for the hill just beyond. I think stopping the EGR from functioning has effectively rolled back the emissions fix (done before I had the vehicle) which is criticised for excessive use of EGR.
  3. Agreed, I certainly gained 4 or 5 mpg after the throttle body cleaning, since then with covid I have done a lot less mileage and different much shorter journey profiles which will also have had an effect. I will reset the long term mpg readout to zero for a fresh start not influenced by the 1500kms done on the autoroute and the 400kms done in sunday driver mode while there. I started with struggling to average 45mpg in full economy mode & have already got that up to 50mpg and not having to spare the horses, a little more would still be appreciated, with the brick aérodynamiques and the 4x4 its never going to be what the Octavias were but its getting closer.
  4. The first two hours of the journey were during the storm that descended from the UK, I was never aware of any wind just torrential rain, my pal said that I would have the Southerly wind behind me but if the storm was moving from North to South would the wind not have been in that direction? At a couple of stops to pour coffee from my flask I noticed tree branches that had blown down but was never aware of any wind. TBH its a big increase in MPG, bigger than when I cleaned all the crud out from the throttle body, a job I will no longer have to do. I'm just about to do an 80km round trip that I regularly do to compare the MPG, that should be more representative.
  5. 52 mph as opposed to 46 mph on way there with EGR. It felt smoother & more flexible but it's only on returning to my usual journeys that I can really appreciate it. The drive from cold from my house up a hill on very light throttle is so much brisket, it will accept a higher gear earlier, it feels so much smoother and more responsive, none can be measured and all could be confirmation bias but I am happy.
  6. That has always sounded like the culprit to me, I always compare the theoretical and measured spot values and also time since last regen, the measured is a always at odds, not sure which triggers the regen. Will try to get measurements for you.
  7. "When the alternator is running it can typically consume up to 10% of the power produced by the engine"................ Ah that wonderful old phrase "up to" once again! My mental calculation tells me that a 120 amp alternator at maximum output would only equate to just under 2 hp, I doubt that they ever run at maximum output but I suppose after a cold engine start with all the accessories switched on, heated screens, heated seats, post heating glow plugs etc it could be 2hp. Maybe with the lowest powered engine at tickover it might just equate to 10% but the alternator could never give maximum output at such low RPM. Who writes this twaddle & why is it not proof read?
  8. I have never experienced such crap headlights as the MK2 Octavia projector lights, worse even than my VW split screen campervan with 6 volt electrics, poor earths and a slipping dynamo belt. Please post a link to your solution.
  9. And it was problème singular.
  10. Possibly, it could be a 2nd language thing, "jets" being plural would indicate something like the injectors. Is there a difference between a "software change" as I had thought and a "firmware change" as it was corrected to?
  11. So it sounds like if you have been walking beyond that 15 minute threshold its logs it as an activity back from its start time, very smart but to do that it must be saving the last 15 minutes of GPS activity all the time so effectively its on GPS all the time, I bet that is hammering your autonomy. Mine only connects to satellites when I manually select an activity. I still use an old school 2004 Nokia mobile phone which only needs charging once a week, that is my reference, smartphone users will be used to charging their devices all the time, as far as a watch is concerned I think it should tell the time for several years before needing the battery changing, these activity watches should have a seperate old school battery to run an old school LCD time display when the bells & whistles battery is discharged. Is there any way to replace the li-ion cells in these watches? It looks to me to be a throwaway job when the battery fails or needs constant charging.
  12. No multiple running shoes on my watch, I frequently forget to start the watch on a run or walk so auto start would be good. It auto starts when I stop for traffic, a pause or a pee.
  13. The battery is starting to age a bit on mine but its autonomy is far longer than you seem to be getting, running 3-4 hours a week and with the bluetooth on all the time I was getting more than 10 days autonomy, my activity profile is different with the lockdown but its down to a week or less with similar activity tracking. I recall there was a GPS setting that did not use all the different satellites that would use the battery less. I guess that you use the same Garmin connect app as I am beginning to see several features that my watch does not support, I'm still very pleased with it though and am not one to change something that is still functioning. I guess others sell their on E-bay when they upgrade like mobile phones.
  14. The cycle tracking feature is of interest, my bike is a Dawes, will it only work with bikes from Menstrual and who sells them? It does seem to have new features that I would like, my Garmin Forerunner 235 will not give me the option of walking or hiking as an activity, I have to log it as a run & then remember to edit it to a walk when uploaded to my phone. Also i was dissapointed to find that the analogue watch face has to be paid for and downloaded, without glasses I cannot read the LCD time whereas an analogue time display is readable even in poor lighting. Both of these things could probably be resolved by someone that does not mind spending their life using their smartphone. I like the O2 monitoring, I had been considering buying an oxymeter.
  15. Please tell me what jets you are talking about, it is relevant.
  16. Was it someone else then that said: VW Group recalled all Euro5 engines, changed the jets and put new firmware onto the cars (for Dieselgate). my guess is going to be a failing pump - which will show up on the CANBUS network. The latter I understood what you meant and I was being a bit naughty so I apologise, for the former I would still like to know if any components were changed (jets may simply be the wrong terminology) because I am looking in detail at how I can either reverse or remove the effects of the "emissions fix" that had previously been done to my vehicle, I had thought it was a software update and not a physical change.
  17. Dont rely on Google translate, he was saying "no more problem" In my early days here I said "plus de bière s'il vous plait" to the waitress thinking I was asking for "une bière de plus" and she replied "déjà fait!" whilst taking away my glass. Some lessons you learn the hard way but they are not forgotten!
  18. What jets are you saying were changed during the recall? What does a stored fault code for a fuel pump failure have to do with the Canbus network? I had not realised that EU5 diesel engines used a carburettor, you learn something every day, last week it was that the ECU detects what octane fuel is in the tank and adjusts the mixture to suit. The week before it was that the canbus network monitors the lighting & signalling bulbs & there was me thinking that it was simply a means of communicating data & commands between modules.
  19. He is a mechanic after my own heart and makes me aware of how losing vision has impeded me also not keeping my hand in by repairing cars for others, mine are just too reliable to keep me in training. Its the little connectors that I most struggle with, once removed & I know which part to push/pull etc then its childs play but it might be years before I do the same job again, hopefully never so it gets forgotten. He removes these connectors with ease using only one hand as the other is holding his camera-phone, I can be stuck for what seems like hours with a recalcitrant hard to reach and see connector. I must buy a couple of the picks that he uses.
  20. Could you expand on that please? I ask because I fitted a DPF emulator last week, the car runs much better and returned 52mpg on a 750km autoroute journey last night whereas I got 46mpg on the same journey 12 days ago. Today I noticed a regen taking place when I switched off which has only happened once before but I have driven 2000 kms in the last 12 days, I had checked on VCDS and a regen took place on the journey down so maybe there would have been several anyway. I am a bit alarmed to think that it could be stuck in permanent regen and cant work out why that should be the case as I dont think there is any link other than on a standard engine EGR is inhibited during a regen.
  21. DPF regeneration in progress.
  22. And so will a pair of ratchet straps in extremis. Or 2 fat mates and some fencing wire in even more extremis! I have always used ratchet straps on my 7's with coil over shocks using the drill press to compress the assembly for removal or the springs before fitting.
  23. I have just fitted one of those EGR emulators, the car feels much more responsive and is currently returning the highest MPG that it ever has but it could be my current touristy driving profile. Tomorros night I will be doing the same curfew breaking 750km journey in the reverse direction at the same speed as I did 10 days ago with the EGR functioning, if I get better MPG it will be quite definitive. Not sure that the EGR did much at motorway speeds though, once I get back into my usual urban driving profile & journeys I will know. It was very easy to fit because the EGR connector came away by pushing the latch in and outwards simultaneously and was visible from above.
  24. A different country and a different approach. I recieved a PV (procès verbal = fine) recently more than 3 months after the offence, looking through all the law texts it seems that they have a delai of 7-14 days to send them out so mine was largely outside of that but then when you dig deeper you see that they are still legal even if sent out 2 years after the alleged offence so why they bother speaking of delai's is a mystery. On the positive side my punishment for being flashed by a speed camera at 89km/h in an 80km/h limit (which would have been 90km/h a year ago) was only €45 and one penalty point removed from the 12 that the French license that I dont even have comes pre-loaded with, if I remain a good boy for 6 months it will be automatically deleted. Even if I were down to the last 1 or 2 points (like having 11 or 12 on a UK license) there would be zero affect on my car insurance premium, there are also speed awareness courses (paid) to get the points back, if you do lose your license which drinking aside is pretty hard to do then dependant on circumstances you will still be able to drive to and from work, or you can pay a fortune for a toy like Noddy car called a VSP (voiture sans permis) and be free to drive anywhere, these are also driven by 14 year olds and people who are incapable of passing a driving test hence the name. The indignity of being seen driving a VSP and the frequency with which inebriated merry makers turn them upside down uring the night is probably the biggest deterrent to losing your license! Another very good ting they do is that for serial drink drive récidivistes the courts can order that they must undergo medical examinations to prove that they are completely tee-total over several months before they are allowed back on the road and they have to continue with regular testing. Insurers are not allowed by law to load a premium by more than 100% for any reason and that includes for a young inexperienced new driver who has just passed their test, so the insurance policy for your 18 year old son/daughter driving an identical car to you can not be more than double what yours is and will most likely be less than that, you will/may of course have a reduction for your no claims history. Your drunken jailbird car thief neighbour's car insurance when his ban has ended will only be double what yours is but if he gose on having accidents the majoration is cumulable so they can double it again but only to a maximum of 400% and no more by law, I suspect every young driver today in the UK who has a clean license will have an insurance premium more than 400% that of an older driver.
  25. A diesel and not petrol and a later generation engine - EU5, but I have just fitted a DPF emulator to my 2.0 TDi Yeti to stop the EGR operation, I did this after seeing how clogged up things have become after only 80k miles when I had to scrape all the clag out of the throttle valve & upper inlet tract, the lower part will be next after an endoscope inspection, it was also to avoid future breakdowns & costly repairs when the EGR cooler would fail, I appreciate that it still could but its no longer being actioned or passing any exhaust gases so I am hoping that the heat exchanger will remain leak free. Anyway it appears to drive a lot better and appears to be more economical, its only a gut feeling as I am away from home housesitting, driving for sightseeing and not my usual urban journey profile. However I will soon be doing the exact same 750km autoroute journey back as I did to come here, at the same speed (about 80mph) and during the night as before (the curfew hours here in France!) and I got 46mpg on the way down & fitted the emulator the day I arrived so it will be easy to see if no EGR improves fuel efficiency at cruising speeds, I suspect if there is an increase in economy it will be during urban journeys.
