  2. A brush cutter thus angled in the combi you can close the boot lid. In the hatchback it protrudes over the bumper.
  3. There were 3 models. A bit like the 3 bears. Hatch - baby bear Saloon - mammy bear Combi - daddy bear
  4. Couple of pointers:: You can get 8 full bags of coal and 4 bales of BNM briquettes in a combi boot with the seats down. A washing machine fits with the back seat in place. It's 5 to 6 inches longer than a hatchback boot. A child's push chair and a week's food shopping for a family of 4 fit nicely in the boot of the combi - not so the hatchback. The saloon is the same length as the estate but you obviously miss out on the extra hight at the hatch. In my experience, the combi is much more practical than the hatch and better looking shape "to boot" ..... If you don't mind the pun.

  6. I had saved this topic because both my windows had given up the ghost around January. I've barely used the car since but nearly died yesterday with the heat so today was the day to go into attack mode.. Pleased to report that simply swapping the driver's complete motor from my 2006 donor car has cured the problem. During one of several tea breaks, I came across this video on a 2007 polo where the chap swaps out 2 items from the motors circuit board and fixes his windows. He names the part numbers of items, which is double Dutch to me (no circuit boards when I started off with my 100E pop) but hopefully will be of help to some on the forum after a trip to Maplins or the like. Apologies if my advancing age means I'm barking up the wrong tree.

  10. I was quoted over €450 by the dealers when I got mine. I spent my spare time for the next week googling and cross checking part #'s and got a brand new identical part shipping and all for €220 - just not stamped with VW/AUDI. Was either some place in France or Germany but cant remember exactly was at least 10 years ago. After checking the code mine threw up, it pointed to knackered plastic cogs that I was able to confirm by splitting the lid off. I'll have a look in the shed at the weekend I know I threw the old one in the new part's box and periodically came across it and fired it to one side up until at least 18 months ago ....... unfortunately, there has been a "mini" clearout in the last 6 months though ....

When mine packed up 200,000 km ago you couldn't get hold of the cogs and I had to buy the part complete.
  12. I had this on mine 1.4 td at around 90,000 km. There was a (2?) plastic cog(s) inside when you split the body that had a couple of worn teeth. I spent a week on the web cross referencing part numbers to source a replacement part from the original suppliers (valeo?) for half the dealer price just doesn't have vw/Audi stamped into it. Strangely, the replacement part is still going strong some 240,000km later, which leads me to believe their must have been a few dodgy ones that made it to the line.
  13. Offset ring spanner comes in handy. I suggest spraying with release / penetrating oil if possible the day before. Dremel armed with the thin cutting discs is also handy to have available if you are doing the drop links at the same time "just in case"
  14. Had an intermittent knock from left side front for a good while which is now more of a permanent addition and is now occasionally harmonised with an accompanying knock from right front. As the car has 330,000 km + on her now, I decided to replace links and roll bar bushes again as I'm pretty sure the last time I did this was at least 140,000 km ago. (Shocks, bearings and top mounts have all been replaced in the last 25,000 km or so.) Car is up on the stands and there is about a 4mm gap between the bush and shoulder on the driver's side and the shoulder appears to be buried in the bush on the passenger side. As the roads here are more like cattle tracks I'm wondering if the wear in the bushes has allowed the bar to 'slide' over or have I bent something forcing it to move? I have the car checked for tracking every year and it hasn't needed adjustment in the last 4 years. It doesn't pull to the side or anything. Any body come across this before?
  15. The mk. 1 seats came with the screws already in the bottom - you just had to order the boxes.
  16. Not all the 1.4 engines had a cover as new. I queried the lack of a cover on my BNM engine when I checked the PDI when my car (one of the very last mk.1 combis) was new. Also got a 1 previous owner BNM 70hp mk.1hatch with no cover
  17. Mine is 07 and on 328,000km. Original engine lasted until 3,000km ago so managed just over 200,000 miles. I bought a hatch with 9 months NCT (mot) and 120,000 miles on it at the right price, ran that till the NCT elapsed and put the engine in the combi which had been parked up for 2 years on the drive by then. Freed the drums on the rear brakes and passed the NCT first time.
  18. I haven't got a clue, I wasn't looking for it on my build but am 99.9% certain I recall salesman saying that.
  19. Pretty sure I was told when I was ordering mine and going through the options, that rear drum brakes means no traction control. I don't know if that means it comes as std. with rear discs though?
  20. Is this on both sides and is the back plate clear of the disc?
