  1. I went out this morning to fill up with diesel and only station open had one pump with Shell V power. No regular diesel.Seems to be a shortage.

Every car that went up my hill(is icy in the middle but at the bottom where i'm at theres 6-7 inches of snow) had issues except mine much to the surprise of several bystanders who were waiting me to fail and probably thinking haha its a Skoda.I can't praise winter tyres enough. Everyone should buy them

  2. I take the following basic steps to help maintain my vRS

oil+filter change every 3 months or earlier. This helps supply the turbo with clean oil and imo it keeps the engine running nicely. I do notice the difference after each oil change.

Change air filter every 3 months and clean air box out.(this would help reduce dirt getting into the EGR?)

Check and regrease battery terminals with PJ or copper grease. Spray WD40 in engine bay.

clean anti roll bar links and spray with silicone based grease.

Every so often take the car out for a good blast of energy, get it revving to 4200rpm if you can in 3rd 4th and 5th. I hold it in those gears for about 5 seconds

You could try cleaning the turbo but i'd suggest using the Innotec kit as have heard good things about it. I'm not technical at all but i've heard EGR usually gets closed if a car's turbo isn't flexed much, which is why i think italian tune ups are good. Can anyone clarify this please?

  3. I think harsh and ignorant is a bit strong. I'm GUESSING he's 23 and that the car was driven significantly harder than it had been by his granny. Hardly harsh or ignorant.

Careful! You could be accused of stereotyping young people!

Not wishing to point out the fact that you've just stereotyped young people yourself, then compounded the fact by pointing out that you think you're a highly responsible driver, but you're not typical of 23 year olds. Are you then the exception to the rule?

The sad fact is that by posting in these forums we show traits in ourselves that we are unaware of. I'm quite happy to apologise if you, or anyone else, found anything I wrote harsh or ignorant. I've admitted that I was in error when I mixed up timing chains and cambelts. I think the OP deserves a bit of harsh treatment, after all he has been exposed as being a trifle economical with the truth and his comments do not strike me as reasonable or balanced.

If you find my characterisation of 23-year-olds and 'young people' offensive then I apologise for that too, and possibly for pointing out the potential hypocrisy in your own comments.

I'm in this thread for a bit or 'Rally round the flag troll bashing' and I'm quite happy to admit it. Try it, it's quite liberating to just let rip once in a while! ;)

    good points well made

  4. I'm no expert but letting a car idle for 15 minutes will help it warm up and helps the oil circulate and get into those harder to reach places. But never let it idle too long(and to me 15 minutes seems to long a time) as it can damage things in long term...or at least i'm told. I personally would prefer to idle for a minute then slowly set off (a minute idle will help the oil circulate), keeping below 2500rpm and not increasing speed until after it is fully warmed up to 90 degrees or whatever temp its ment to be.

  5. I bought my winter tyres in September and watched as the prices went up bit by bit. Last time I checked they were now £30 a corner more than what I had paid. If you buy them do I what I did and get them earlier in the year. Don't wait until November unless you want to pay more for them.

  6. Snow has only just hit us down south!

Small bit on the ground tonight but nothing to get worried about :)

Cars getting towed tomorrow... hope it doesnt get too bad :'(

I hope you guys don't get anymore.I'm in Southampton on Saturday as I am every weekend and don't want to be stuck in traffic.

We've had 5 inches here in south east with more forecasted today.

  7. If you must go out driving for fun in weather conditions where most areas are suggesting you go out only if absolutely necessary, I'd hope that you would have appropriate tyres on

I'd be well p*ssed off if the taxpayers' money was being wasted on pulling someone out of a ditch, or worse, just because he wants to have a play in the snow :dull:

yes that is why in my post I wrote I've got winter tyres

I also have snow socks, shovel and rock salt in a container kept in the boot of my car. No ******* bit of snow will stop me. Unlike the rest of the world it seems who use their credit cards to scrape the ice of their cars and can't afford proper hiking waterproof boots but they can afford very expensive cars. The mind boggles at their stupidity.

I don't know what planet some of you lot live on, but where I live I expect any car that is regularly serviced to last a minimum of 10 years.

sshhh don't tell him that!! I was just trying to make the guy feel better about his Skoda. :giggle:

  9. All said and done, if you have had it 6 years then it has done well and you've really soldiered on no matter how many problems it has given you. The saying never look a gift horse in the mouth maybe true (especially if its got long hair, nice boobs, nice legs and is willing and most able. I think Heather Graham) but in your case you got a lemon. If its too good to be true then it probably is and you are better off avoiding free cars in future.Only leads to trouble.

  10. Do you think the 4x4 mud tyre jeep would be superior in snow/ice than the Fabia on proper winter tyres? I really can't afford or justify spending hundreds on new wheels and tyres at the moment!

I drive a fabia vrs with proper winter tyres on 205/45/16 and I was able to make my way up the hill where a 4x4 and lorry struggled. So having a 4x4 isn't all its cracked up to be.

Its been snowing here non stop since lunch time

  11. I went out for a drive this evening on really badly hit local roads(for fun mainly) where there's 6 inches of snow. I live near dartford, m25 area which is very badly hit. I had no problems, the ABS never kicked in and the traction control didn't flash either. I love my winter tyres. I'd never go back to summer tyres because they are crap in this weather and unsafe. I also find more comfortable knowing i'm in a better position to avoid other summer tyre drivers who slip and slide dangerously everywhere...even when there's just 3 inches of snow.

I feel more of a hard nut than a softy because I outgunned a lorry and a range rover going up a hill. I was the only one that didn't wheel spin or need to brake.

that to me speaks volumes for safety and knowing you're more in control.

  12. haha! good find Amanda. I'm still not sure if he had the car 6 years or 10 months. A mistype?

To the OP, if you've had issues with your car do not fret as we all have had to go through this at sometime or another. If you've had it for 6 years then to be honest it has done well. When yo say you had the timing chain replaced, do you mean the "belt"? as far as i'm aware the Fabia doesn't use a chain. I stand corrected if I am wrong here.

But bear in mind it was your "nan's car" as you stated earlier so I'd assume it was used as a run around and probably didn't see many motorway miles.

I've seen many cars that have belonged to grandad's nan's etc and they usually are neglected, oil changes are only done annually(that is not enough for stop start/short distance run cars.) and they are not run for great distances. All of these will contribute to many mechanical problems, regardless of what brand of car it is.

Skoda are OK in terms of reliability and generally owners are happy but they are not the best, but they are certainly not the worst. If you want something better then look at Honda, Mazda or Toyota. Mitsubishi are good too but very expensive if it does go wrong.

  13. Either "Turanza" translates as "winter killer from the far east" or the Fabia is just plain Sh*te in the snow. (probably both) I have lots and lots of experience in much worse weather than this, but the combination of Fabia II and 195 55 Bridgestones is by far the worst setup I've ever experienced. ABS 100% of the time - is it me or is the ABS setup far too aggressively - anyway ABS does absolutely nothing on snow / ice except remove any semblance of stopping ability.

i have turanza's as my summer tyre and did use it last year in the snow. It wasn't bad.

my only advice is get some winter tyres. They should make using winter tyres a legal requirement as it would prevent a lot of hold ups, accidents down to stupid driving in bad weather.

  14. I found this on ITG's website which pretty much is what the others said

    Cleaning your filter:-

Using Petrol: The best and cheapest way to clean your filter is to use normal petrol which is readily available. Using a shallow, petrol resistant tray, fill with around 10mm depth of petrol. Dip the filter in the petrol and agitate so that the petrol goes into the filter foam and draws the dirt/dust out into the tray. The petrol will dissolve the oil instantly and will also help draw out the dust. Once you are happy that the entire oil residue and dirt has been removed by the petrol dispose of the petrol in the appropriate manner (at a recycling tip or similar but not down the household drain system). Only repeat this process with clean petrol if necessary. Immediately refill the tray with cold water plus 5ml of washing up detergent and agitate the filter in the solution for a couple of minutes. This process helps remove any remaining oil/dust and also removes cleaning solution residue. Rinse the filter in cold water until none of the soap suds remain and then shake the filter to remove excess water. Leave the filter to air dry in an open environment, but away from any ignition source or naked flame for a minimum of 24 hours, then re oil using instructions above.

  15. Twenty quid a set of NGK'S. Easy enough to do yourself. Don't have to be technically minded to change instead of paying a garage stupid money for labour.

£20...Cheaper than i found. Eurocarparts do them for £40 approx and a guy on ebay is doing NGK for £8.95 a plug.

  16. i appear to misplaced my service book for my vRS. Can anyone tell me please when the glowplugs are supposed to be changed, and any idea how long and how much a garage would charge? From memory i think it is 60k interval but mines done 54k almost and thinking it nearing the time.

  17. I tend to change upto 6th gear when at 65mph but sometimes i hold it in 4th and 5th longer...all the way upto 4000rpm to help clear out any crap. I do a 240 mile trip every weekend mostly motorway and usually at speeds of 90-120mph and the computer reads anything between 49-51mpg. If i take it easy and do 70-80 then i nearly always get between 55-62mpg. From a full tank i get anything between 450-500 miles. I mainly use the super diesel as opposed to the cheaper one and i give it a shot of forte every so often but always put the forte in first then fill up with fuel so that it mixes better.

from what i know and experienced colder weather would worsen your mpg because when it is cold, engine takes longer to warm up and more energy is needed. Tyre pressures can also drop when its cold and this effects rolling resistance. A car's engine oil, gear oil, etc will be very cold and therefore will take longer to move from one place to another so this again means more energy to move and warm it up.

  18. Mahle, Mann, Bosch, Skoda OE...all pretty much a much of a muchness. but i'm sure the skoda one is the only one that uses the zig zag pattern and it does have thicker paper. But they all are tested to filter to a certain level of microns and to be honest i think its unlikely you'll get any big advantages. The oil itself acts as a filter as it suspends a lot of dirt. I'd use a high quality oil first and foremost.
