  1. 1.6TDi with 25k miles (3.5 yrs old) DPF light came on and then within about 2 miles car went into limp mode with coil light and engine management light. Phone App through OBD port brought up fault code P2463 - Soot accumulation. Towed to dealer this morning. Dealer ran diagnostics, updated software and did a forced regen. When I collected the car I asked what level the soot had reached (don't know the proper term) thinking it must be more than 40 grams to trigger limp mode (as stated in the technical details kindly shared by littleade). Answer was 16 grams!!!!! I asked if this could be a software fault and why my car went into limp mode at such a low level. Was told it could have been due to a number of different issues/ sensors feeding back and triggering it. Does this sound right??? I recall seeing another post somewhere that someone had a similarly low reading and it was discovered the car did not need a regen, but a new sensor. I would appreciate your advice or experience with similar issues. Thanks
  2. That's detailed! Very interesting to see the various stages of DPF regeneration. Just have my fingers (and everything else) crossed that mine has less than 45 grams. Doesn't mention that regen won't take place with low fuel though.
  3. DPF light came on yesterday morning, within a mile and with no opportunity to drive to clear it, the coil light came on and car went into limp mode. Spoke with dealer and explained the problem (car is waiting to be towed to garage). They mentioned that if the fuel in the tank is less than 15 litres, then it will not regen. Car is sitting just above the red, and as it's my wife's car, it spends most of it's time in the bottom quarter. Did anyone else know about the no regen if the fuel is low issue? I checked through the manual and it doesn't mention it there.... if this is the case surely we should all know about it if we want our cars to have proper regular DPF regens.
  4. Not to hijack the post, but had my discs replaced (2nd time 20k miles) yesterday. When i spoke to the mechanic i asked if the discs actually were warped. I would be very surprised that my routine 50-70mph 70mile round trip to work in a 10 yr old TDI could damage discs. He showed me the discs and a clear brake dust line on the back of one (makes sense that i hadn't noticed it). Although not conclusive that the brakes weren't warped, i would be 99% sure it was in fact the brake dust build up. I just don't know how this could happen twice in approx 15k miles on two sets of new discs when i got 90k miles out of the first pads and 115k miles out of the original discs with no issues? I am assuming it is a PAD problem....
  5. I'm not trying to b smart, but if they were warped, a few hard stops wont unwarp them. Sounds like u had build up of brake dust from the new pads. I am leaving my car into garage again tomorrow to have the discs changed for the second time in 20k miles. Both times my discs have warped after 7k miles and no amount of hard braking has made a difference.
  6. Just tonight this started. I have had a look around under the seats and no sign of lose connections. The car will be in the garage on Wednesday for other work, but i am curious as to what the usual suspects could be. Would any part of the airbag system make a sort of whirring/ disengaging sound when the car is switched of if not operating properly or on the way out? I ask because for the past few months my car has made a noise (which i thought sounded like a relay) once switched off for about 12 seconds and then stops completely. the noise seems to be coming from the front middle of the car (behind the dash area). Thanks
  7. That's exactly how mine feels. Feedback through the pedal is almost like ABS kicking in and the steering wheel feedback/ shake when braking hard is getting very annoying.
  8. Most of the driving was done before we bought the car (14k miles). My wife does short journeys mostly, but not to see 20k out of a set of tyres is shocking in my experience. I don't know if there is any uneven wear. i will get a closer look in the day light, but from a quick look before it looked the same wear across the tyres. It is running Dunlop Sport i think. Would these be a soft, quick wearing tyre?
  9. Not that i recall, although i never went through any "running in" driving, should i? and it's strange that both sets of discs have developed same fault at same miles?
  10. Mechanic usually uses OEM for all parts. He returned the last ones as warranty to the supplier, but i don't want to just do the same thing again and have the same issue.
  11. My wife's FL TDI estate has worn through its first set of tyres after only 23k miles. We have had the car from 14k miles when the dealer swapped front and rear tyres. Had he kept them the way they were the fronts wouldn't have lasted past 15k miles. I have to purchase 4 new tyres now, but is this common? My Mk1 TDI gets about 25k out of fronts and 40k+ from rear (not very easy driving) Thanks
  12. Discs were changed on the front at about 115k miles for the first time, pads renewed also. Within 5k miles there was constant and very obvious judder under any sort of braking. Mechanic had discs replaced at next service (10k miles). I now have about 7k miles since then and the brake judder has come back as bad. Now under any sort of heavy braking the whole steering wheel shakes its that bad. I will be phoning the mechanic this week, but is there any common reason why this would happen? I have read that the hub should be cleaned to make sure the new discs are aligned. My normal journey is a 70mile round trip to work on decent roads with only light braking, so i don't think brake dust build up at this stage is a problem. Thanks
  13. Lens arrived last saturday and sent off tuesday for calibration to tamron. Initial tests showed extreme front focus at 17mm. More waiting :-*
  14. Just wondering what the difference is in these two (apart from the obvious styling). If i were to consider changing the octy in a couple of years for a 105 Bhp TDI what would i gain/ lose out on in either of these. I assume they have the same number of gears (5 or 6??), the Monte Carlo has lower profile alloy/ tyres and harder suspension, but the Elegance comes with standard Climate and cruise control etc?? Also, like for like what would the difference bein cost of a 3 year old and how do the insurance groups stack up? I could look up all this myself, but would rather have opinions from those who have the cars and can vouch for them. P.s. i would probably think of remapping/ tuning box at some stage, so would the habdling of the Monte Carlo suit this better. Thanks Colm
  15. After years of should i/ shouldn't i, i finally took the jump and ordered the tammy 17 50 2.8 (non vc) as an upgrade to my 18 55 is canon kit lens. Fingers crossed it should b here in no more than a couple of weeks.
  16. Have managed to get some xmas day photos edited in both canon dpp and LR4. Must admit i'm 100% taken with the additional editung options of LR4 and the more pleasing outcome. May post a few examples. Now just have 2 find the money to purchase as i only hav 13 days of trial remaining.
  17. We live and learn..... Think the Turbo was £850 or there abouts. Spoke with a different mechanic who fixed my exhaust a few months later who said i should have came to him as he is the only garrett Agent in Northern ireland and could have got the turbo for £500 new. Like i say, live and learn.
  18. I bought my first camera off here. It was a refurb canon 350d and served me well, never had any issues. If you can stretch a bit further than the 350d i would advise it. The difference in screens and ease of use in menu etc jumped considerably from the 350d to my current 450d and it is considered old! Depending on your budget, £290 for a new canon 1100D would be a good buy for a starter (prob better spec than my current 450d) http://www.camerapricebuster.co.uk/mcp.php?n=CanonDigitalSLRs=&mc=1 Another consideration, does your daughter want the option of taking video? this may add a little extra to keep her interest in the camera for a longer period and future proof it somewhat. Colm
  19. Just getting into it now, and it's confusing to say the least.I download all my raw files through Canon's EOS utility, which sorts them into folders by date. Seems i have to import these folders each time i go into LR4 even though i may have previously imported the parent folder?? Also, when i have edited a photo in Develop, what is the easiest way to export as JPEG? i hav been right clicking and then exporting one at a time, if there is an easier way i can't see it for all the buttons!!! Like most technology i am slating it because of my ignorance. I have about 22 days trial left so hope to give it a good try out over xmas with family/ kids photos. Will get a selection of photos and do a Canon DPP versus LR4 comparison. I found a lot of useful tools, especially the ability to increase the contrast more locally than DPP. However, from experience, the more options i have, the more likely i am to C**k up my photos. If i did get a decent workflow going where i could carry out some effective minor adjustments (possibly preset) and then convert a number of files in a batch (open to suggestions as to how ) I am sure i would start to appreciate the software how it was intended. Thanks Colm
  20. Old post, but realised i hadn't closed it out. In the end i got the car towed to the garage where i got the turbo and a few lines/ hoses etc replaced for £1,200 including labour. Did sound steep, but its a new VAG like for like turbo with parts and labour 3 year warranty should anything go wrong.
  21. Thanks Have downloaded the 30 day trial version of Adobe LR4 to see how i get on. Now the hard part, getting time to take photos to experiment on....
  22. I have a copy of Photoshop CS5 which is rarely used as i tend to stick to Canon's own software (DPP) for RAW conversion and basic edits such as cropping. However, DPP does not produce the contrasts etc which i could achieve like-for-like in CS5. Problem is, DPP is a one stop shop whereas CS5 is cumbersome. I am looking something in between, which has editing capabilities and is good for RAW conversion and workflow. I have been told to try Adobe Lightroom. Can anyone recommend it, or other similar packages? Also, where is the best place to get it, and do i really need the latest version? I really only take family photos, so i prefer not to spend a lot if possible. Thanks Colm
  23. I had the turbo in my 2003 110TDI replaced with a new VAG one about 4 months ago after the original blew up (120k miles). Now i have noticed there is a noise from it between gears. Can't hear it from inside, only when my wife drives off in it usually low rev gear change from first to second. Its a whirring sound and happens when you would expect a dump valve noise on a petrol turbo to happen. i have heard similar noise on other cars before (TDIs), but always thought it sounded like someone had modded it. P.s. Mine has had a decat for about 18 months. the noise may have been there before the old turbo blew, but i don't recall it. just concerned its serious. thanks Colm
