  1. Yes, I'm getting a bit fed up with automatic this, that and the other. I want to drive my own car, driven by me, not by a robot system that might be okay sometimes, and then, a second later, drive you under a truck. An important part of driving on our often congested roads is being alert and aware of what's going on, and knowing exactly what to switch on and off when you need to. Makes you wonder if the hi-tech age is what produces the idiots who are playing with their phones or i-pads or whatever while going around a busy roundabout?
  2. I'm pretty sure mine did too. Seems an odd thing to leave out, especially as the symbol is there anyway?
  3. How odd! Still so long as it is ok - funny I never noticed it before.............. ................back to sleep......zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
  4. When I turn on my sidelights the small symbol on the switch dial lights up correctly. When I turn to main lights (dipped), that symbol on the dial does not light. up. When I turn from dipped to main bean, the symbol on the speedo dial does light up. The lights themselves work correctly all the time. Does this mean a fuse controlling the light switch symbol has blown? If that is probably so, which fuse is it and where does it live? Or on second thoughts could it be the symbol bulb or LED itself?
  5. Yes really! The only time it occurs to me that I'm on the smaller engine is if I am full of passengers, maybe going up a hill, and then all I do is hold the lower gears a bit longer up the rev range before I change up. Apart from that it feels the same, probably because I'm never using all its got anyway, and also probably never did in the 1.8. Anyway, bottom line is I'm happy with the 1.4 performance, for my needs and love the savings in costs!!
  6. Had manual only Mk 2 1.8 TSi, and now have Mk 3 1.4 TSi, and can hardly tell the difference in terms of oomph. But 1.4 is remarkably economical in mpg, road tax etc. Haven't driven diesels, and have no reason to use one. Mk. 3 seems a little less "solid" build than Mk. 2 but not enough to be a bother - so far !
  7. I suppose it depends, in the end, if the puncture is able to have a legal repair done anyway. Some can be fixed temporarily as a "get you home" but don't comply with permanent repair requirements e.g. they are too near the wall, and so on.
  8. Sounds good, but you shouldn't have to.
  9. That's more or less what I asked the servicing people to do. I used to use Copperslip. I was told that the factory don't bother from new so this is a common problem. Like you would never have a puncture !!!
  10. I found more of a practical problem is that it can be almost impossible to remove the wheel from its hub, even when all the nuts are off. I wanted to remove a front wheel to retouch some paint (doing it on the bench). I had to do it still on the car. So when it went in for its first service I asked them to remove each wheel, put a bit a grease on the area that binds to the hub, then refit them, just in case I do ever have to change a wheel in the middle of nowhere. Fortunately, since then the need has not arisen but you never know !!
  11. In that case it should have come on around September 27th !! (Last service was Oct. 27 2015)
  12. When I turned on the ignition today the message came up "inspection due in 30 days." I do about 5000 miles a year, the car was bought late October 2014, first service and oil change late October 2015, so nothing should be due yet. Phoned up the dealer (who does my servicing) and was told to ignore it unless it bothers me (which it doesn't as the message goes off after a few seconds). But they said they could reset it if I was down their way any time soon. Anyone else had this?
  13. I have used the West Worthing Skoda dealers for quite a time (bought my last 2 Octavias new from them) and I also find them very good. I suppose it depends on the individuals you are dealing with. It is just that the new JCB lot are literally just up the road from me. Still, I'm quite happy to drive over to Palatine Road!!
  14. I notice that a JCB garage in Portslade near me has started offering servicing etc. for Skodas. I gather they count as a main dealer in that way although I don't think they sell Skodas. Has anyone in my part of the world used them for regular servicing yet? (Not very good customer reviews so far !!)
  15. Even though I like sports cars of various sorts, I do not like the very big wheel/very low tyre look on a saloon (ok, a hatchback.) I imagine the difference in road holding is hardly noticeable, unless you are practising for Le Mans maybe. And, as said before, I'd sooner have a big fat tyre protecting my nice alloy rim from some lousy abrasive kerb.
  16. Does the 150 one still keep itself in the £30 road tax bracket? The 140 one is 119 emission so is only just under the limit.
  17. I'm sure our local MP, Caroline Nutcase, would love you !!!!
  18. I agree. I hardly ever use all the gears. 1st, 2nd 3rd then 6th usually !! However, the benefits of 4th and 5th seem to be when you are cruising at speeds more suited to those, for whatever reason - eg traffic, bends, hills, whatever It is really more like having three different top gear options according to conditions.
  19. Just got back from a return journey of about 60 miles, starting with "full" tank. On return it still registers as full! The available mileage left figure started at about 385, but by the time I got home it was around 400. Typical speed on the run was about 60 mph. with almost no hold ups.
  20. Was that on a 3 year PCP or similar deal then? Mine is, and gets all servicing free up to third year. At present it is only 20 months old and under 9000 miles.
  21. The only other thing I would add, according to the experts, you have to go through several full tanks of the "better" fuel before the changeover is noticeable. Something to do with the engine electronics re-educating themselves! Still, as I am very happy on 95, I can't be bothered!
  22. I have tried "super" without being impressed, and I use 95 either from Tesco or Sainsbury, and to be honest I find more difference between those two unleadeds than between 95 and 97. (Prefer Tesco!!)
  23. I agree that, having the SE now, I missed some of the aspects of my previous 1.8 TSi Mk. 2 Elegance. Mainly the cruise (though only used it on runs up to London etc) and the CD multi disc player in the boot. Now I have the single player I haven't used it once. The different prices when I bought new, Oct. 2014, I felt the Elegance wasn't then worth the difference. But then again the Octy has somewhat lost its original value for money glow! My 1.8 TSi Elegance manual hatch in 2008 was a bit over £12000, the 2014 1.4 TSi was over £19000
  24. AS I've said a lot (!) I went from my 6 year old Mk. 2 1.8 TSi to 2014 1.4 TSi, manual, with some misgivings till I test drove one. It felt much the same as my 1.8. Since then it often surprises me at its responsive acceleration, like a much bigger engine (though I do leave the engine in sport mode.) Add to that great economy in MPG (nearly all short, town drives, averaging about 40 from new), road tax,(£30) insurance and maintenance (has never needed oil apart from the usual oil change at its first service.) Have never had to add coolant either. Tyres hardly ever seem to need more air. All I do is top up the screen wash !!!
  25. Right, I just checked and at 30 mph mine seemed to be on 1000 rpm give or take. So at 70 it is not even doing 2500 rpm. No wonder all the power is low down.
