  1. all this talk of cleaning makes me want to rush outside and get out the polish. anyhow, i see a lot of recommendation for ambersil, but will this be enough to remove the coffee and coke stains from my white bits on the seats, or can aybody suggest a better way? i tried using some vax stuff but its just left tide marks everywhere
  2. excerrrrrrlentez... learn something new every day... i wasnt aware that this was even available, so whats the cost and wher do i go
  3. hey, you are describing exactly the same 3 major problems as i had with my 02 vrs. 1. the hazard light switch will cure your indicator problem. 2. the hesitation, exactly as you describe, was solved on mine with two new hoses, admittedly 60 squids for the pair but feels like a new car now, and 3. the battery death, i had the same problem and it turned out to be the courtesy light in the drivers door was staying on 24/7 down to corrosion in the door loom ive had no problems since, all in all it cost me a ton in parts but it was all DIY stuff, apart from the corrosion issue, im lucky enough to be good at soldering... dont give up, ok so it cost me money to get mine back up to scratch but its all worth it when you consider that permanent smile you get when you floor it if you look closely at these forums you'll find a wealth of information and hints and tips, my entire knowledge base about the car has come from here, with a bit of help from jody at midland vw, and its all stuff worth knowing. BTW, anybody with the same wiring corrosion issues is welcome to bring their motor for some professional reworking, im in the staffordshire area.
  4. whats all this talk about xenons??? i'm using standard 3 pin halogens, i assume when you say xenon you mean HV /HID units? was this a factory option? and where can i get mine....!!!
  5. same problem with mine until i had two pipes changed under the plastic engine cover thingy, one was a s shaped hose about 6 inches long and half inch wide, the other was a twin outlet junction type thingy which had a huge hole in it, and i have a picture of where it is if you want it, i just cant work out how to get it on here...?
  6. the problem you describe with hestation is the same problem I had with my 02 vrs just after I fitted my aftermarket filter, and it turned out to be two split hoses under the plastic engine cover, now replaced and back to former glory. coincidence? or maybe some subtle design fault along the line?
  7. same problem on my 02 vrs turned out to be two split hoses, not sure what for, but apparently a common issue, one S-shaped hose and one twin hose junction thingy at the top of the engine
  8. I had exactly the same problem on my 02 vrs, turned out to be the well known problem of condensation in the driver door getting into a control box plug and rotting all the pins away. guarantee thats your problem, you will pay hundreds to have it done at a garage, if you can find somebody who is a dab hand with a soldering iron and youre prepared to risk damaging it anyway, its usually repairable
  9. its plugged in to the drivers door window motor, and its a bitch to get out, metal clips and plastic clips all over, and you have to be mega gentle when pulling it out of the window motor as theres a flimsy PCB in there. I'm fortunate enough to have a background in PCB repair, so I've managed to fix my corroded CCU today by doing away with the plug and just hard wiring everything, luckily it all worked first time and has now cured the electrical gremlins, and saved me hundreds of hard earned squids worth a try if you fancy taking the risk of blowing it up
  10. the problems developing with internal lights suggests problems with the CCU which is located in the drivers window motor and has a plug attached to it that fills with water and rots all the pins away!
  11. a big thanks goes out to all of you who pointed me in the right direction when my electrics got the gremlins, finally i now have control of all my windows and locks and all the interior lights come on at the right time...you guys were completely right about the corrosion in the drivers door loom, i had the door in bits today and when i unplugged the CCU i found not only a corroded plug and socket but enough trapped water to keep a small fish. Less than an hour from start to finish, I've done away with the ridiculous plug and socket method, and hard soldered all those fiddly wires straight onto what was left of the pins, a generous helping of silicone sealant and some dessicant bags later, and i now have a working car and its not cost me a penny. My advice? as long as you are prepared to accept the consequences if it all goes wrong and you wire the thing backwards, or reap the hundreds of pounds savings if it all goes well, its definitely worth a try....

  13. well passed the mot today even with the indicators going at random pace, there was a frown on the testers face but still a pass cert at the end, with just a warning about some play in the steering arm. one steering arm and a set of brakes and a service later and the only outstanding performance problem is a pair of split breathers which is all booked to be done on saturday. however the electrical problems have worsened and spread, with all the windows now opening themselves randomly, i asked the question while i was in the workshop today how to remove the trim and module from the drivers door, and the answer was "its a bitch" so with this in mind i guess my weekend is planned out for various sliced fingers and swear words... watch this space
  14. yeah i saw that one for sale at skoda bilston, exactly a year after i got my 02 vrs, from the same showroom, and the wrc was a grand cheaper.... gutted
  15. theres a crafty silver beast that prowls the streets of stafford, starved of its vrs badges but with giveaway strobe clusters in the back window...
  16. yes, you were completely right about the drivers door light, and now ive looked more closely, the door open warning light on the dash is flickering along with the main roof courtesy light, and the fact that the door top LED is permanently on, is pointing towards failure of the central convenience unit. Not quite sure what this thing is or what the fix is, ive checked some other posts and the general opinion is that is needs to be replaced along with some sort of loom, I'll let you know what i find out or check http://www.briskoda.net/forums/octavia/nutcase-drivers-side-window/70649/
  17. i have noticed the same problem on my 02 vrs last couple of weeks, the LED is stopping on permanently, the driver door lock is doing its own thing, sometimes not locking sometimes not unlocking, the passenger side window is no longer working from the drivers controls but fine on the passenger door switch, also found the courtesy light in the drivers door pocket is stopping on permanently causing the battery to die after a few days of standing, I think i could safely assume that this central convenience thing is the problem on mine? can anybody explain what this thing does, and why i would need a loom to go with it, more to the point how much does all this lot cost to replace, or is there an easy fix?
  18. Can i be right in assuming that the problems i have described could explain or be caused by the sudden duff battery which is running flat after about 3 days of not using the car?
  19. Just another quick addition to the already vast list of faults, a couple of months back the lumbar support in the drivers seat made a horrible snapping noise and now it fails to wind out, and i end up sinking into the seat. The winder appears to be reaching the end of its travel as the handle stops turning, is this going to mean taking the seat apart or can i push it back together somehow from the outside?
  20. My 02 Octavia Vrs has developed some problems just in the last couple of weeks, and the MOT is a week away so if anybody can help with some easy or cheap fixes, much appreciated!! Might not fail on all of these but annoying all the same. 1. The red LED in the top of the drivers door refuses to go out, i was under the impression that these things flash when the car is locked, and go out when the car is started. It just stays on all the time? 2. Theres a strange clicking noise from the passenger door, intermittent and random, must be a relay somewhere as the headlights dim every time it clicks, and it appears now i cant open the passenger electric window from the drivers door switch, however the passenger door switch works ok? 3. The indicators have started to flash irregularly, I'm told this is down to a faulty hazard light switch but is it repairable rather than new part required? 4. I've got an aftermarket air filter, and the recirc can be heard well, normally its a nice quick release but i'm starting to hear it chattering when ive accelerated from low revs, sounds like compressor stall to me, and on some gearchanges i come back on the power and the engine is flat and just hissing loudly for a few seconds, then it will come on boost suddenly and take off, is this normal in some circumstances or is my recirc on its way out? 5. Sometimes when i start the car from cold, i get a strange intermittent whirring noise, almost like a belt slipping, but ive had it to the garage and they reckon everythings tight, it disappears after a few seconds of driving? 6. The seatbelt only reels itself back in if i feed it in, is there an adjustment somewhere or am i going to need a new mechanism? 7. Every time I go over a bump or speed ramp >spit<, the whole front end creaks like an old staircase, its had new ARBs in the last 3 months and the creaking went away to start with, but now its back with a vengeance, is there an alternative to the OEM bushes, without going poly and sacrificing ride quality? Well, thats all I can think of at the moment, quite a repair list considering the car has only travelled 6000 miles in the year I've had it, and it was allegedly serviced by the dealership the day before it became mine. Any suggestions or info muchly muchly obliged
