Is a remap a waste of time???

Featured Replies

i have been considering getting a remap for my octy, however i spoke to the guys at jabba and they said that because i have a 1.8 20v non-turbo the gains made would not be worth the cost i'd pay so they don't offer one for this engine. is this true? has anyone had a non-turbo 1.8 remapped? if this is true, does anyone know how i can improve the performance of the engine?

id imagine youd see some benefit but not as much as a the turbo as generally it seems turbo cars are a lot more easily improved with remaps where a non turbo theres a limit to the things that can be adjusted electronically.

Sell it and buy a vRS...

I'd agree with them; about the most you can reasonably expect from a plain remap on a non-turbo engine is 10%.

Yes you can get more extra power than that by re-tuning a non-turbo, but we're looking at reported head, new cam, new exhaust manifold and system, possibly new inlet manifold and injectors, and then remapping to correct the ignition advance curve and fuelling for the new tune.

Tuning N/A petrol cars is a tricky one as they can't easily be overfuelled unlike diesels. You could do mods to the intake and exhaust systems that a custom map would then be able to take advantage of, I suppose?

Must admit, I'm pleasantly surprised that Jabba advised you against the remap, as I'm pretty sure they were the ones who were more than happy to take another member's 1.4 MPi Fabia in for a remap. Not saying they've done the wrong thing by you, in fact I admire their honesty in this case!

I think also in that case (the 1.4MPI) they advised against. That said, if you wanna do it they'll take your money and do their thing, there are benefits to be had, just not going to be anywhere near the same value for money compared to a turbo'd engine :)

I must admit , I have advised people not to go down the route of a remap on N/A cars

A cat back exhaust and an induction kit , or a pannel filter will give a few more BHP just like a remap

Sorry guys , it is true if you want more BHP try getting a turbo engine

Or even the possiblility of a supercharger , but will cost

A car will go as fast as your wallet will allow

Buit a remap on a NA engine can have some benefits... a remap isn't just about huge bhp gains.

I know of someone who had a 1.9 SDI remapped - gained about 5 bhp

However, the car was a lot more drivable in terms of delivery of power and the mpg increase was very good :)

cant speak for skoda engines but my vectra 2.0sri has had a few tweaks: enlarged direct cold air feed upto throttle body which was also smoothed and enlarged. FSE reg, panel filter, and cat back zorst. ive now got a superchip ecu from a very very similar engine and ive found the response from the engine is better, its smoother through the revs and i think it revs more happily than before.

next stage would be a 4 branch manilfold and sports cat to balance out the breathing of the car. more aggresive cams, higher flow injectors (poss) and a proper remap then to take in all the mods. but even then i woudlnt hope for lots more bhp, just maybe more torque and having a engine thats more responsive and a nicer drive.

ultimatley the only real way for power from a NA engine is throttle bodies and some seroiuous hard graft! i knew someone running a highly modded vectra engine that was upto 180-190bhp and that was without TB's :D
