VAG COM not working?!!?!

Featured Replies

Need help here.

Bought a USB lead (yes, i know you prefer serial but it was cheep ;))

Downloaded the freeware vagcom software.

Installed, plugged in, installed usb driver - all fine.

Plugged into car, turned car on, ran test - all showing ok. Recognized etc....

BUT when i try to connect to a control module (either auto or single ones) it just retries and retries...... I never get any info?

Any ideas?

I'm sort of suffering from the same thing. Are you able to scan for faults ok?

Nope - nothing..... :(

All i get is retries....

Do any of the dash lights come on when you scan the modules? Think if you query something like the ABS module, the traction control light comes on, but I only got round to playing with mine (serial lead) the other day.... :D

The lights are on as per when you switch the ignition on - nothing looks different.

And the LEDs on the cable are on too? Is it just certain modules which don't work, or is it all of them - might be something to do with latency of USB compared to serial .... and you did download the USB version of VAG-COM ;)

Might be worthing posting up here as the Ross-Tech support people look in and can probably offer some things to try :)

I have 1 green led on, the red one doesn`t light (i believe)....

It`s deffo the usb version ;)

FWIW, the new Octavia - in common with all Golf 5 platform cars and the new Audi A6 and A8 - will need a direct CAN connection according to Ross-Tech's website. Their HEX-COM+CAN cable plus VAG-COM software costs $364 inc delivery to a UK address. If only I had the money.......

I'm sure Denis is using some kind of terrorist coding here.

Can you elaborate for us VAG com numpties what on earth HEX-COM+CAN is.

Ta.

HEX-COM is short for a HEX-COM serial interface cable for use with a laptop or PC in conjunction with VAG-COM diagnostic software. The clever (and expensive) thing about the HEX-COM cable is that it acts as a 'dongle' for the VAG-COM software' date=' enabling this to be used on any laptop or PC and not just the one that the software would normally be activated for.

CAN stands for Controller Area Network and is a different diagnostic hardware/software method from that used on earlier vehicles. All Golf-5 platform cars (including Golf-5, VW Touran, new VW Caddy, Seat Altea, new Skoda Octavia, new Audi A3) as well as the new Audi A8 and new Audi A6 use CAN. HEX-COM+CAN is a HEX-COM interface cable designed for use with those new vehicles, as well as being backwardly compatible. Equivalent HEX-USB and HEX-USB+Can interface cables are also available. This page explains all in more detail.

Cheers Denis - you learn something everyday.
