Sky +

Featured Replies

Hello all,

Before i go any further please excuse my ignorance when it comes to Sky.

My ex has a basic Sky subscription which came with a thomson box. What i would like to know is can i buy a Sky+ box, say from eBay, so that she can record programs onto the hard drive without upgrading the subscription. My 3.5 year old son cant get enough of Handy Manny!!!!

I have never had Sky, i have just had Freeview and have since purchased a PVR which of course has this function without a subscription.

Again, please excuse my ignorance.

Cheers.

No. You need two aerial connections to your box, and sky need to activate your viewing card to + so you can record stuff.

They often have upgrade offers on to +, just keep your eye open for them :)

The monthly subscription doesn't go up either :)

I think you have to upgrade your sky dish (or part of it) to bring two aerial connections to your box. Not sure if you will need to upgrade your subscription as well though??

edit: Damn it. Must type faster (and not go for a pee before replying)

All black sky dishes, as far as i know, have 4 connections :)

Cheers guys for the prompt replies.

Basically am screwed unless she upgrades her sub. Never mind it was just a thought.:thumbdwn:

Really? the sky man spent ages changing stuff on our dish.

She should have a word with sky. There are some good deals out there and they tend to get better if you threaten to leave. I got sky + for £16 a month (minimum subscription) with free fitting:thumbup:

Thats cracking deal you got there! She's been with them a while so will get to work on tyring to convince her to give them a phone.

Cheers

I've had my Sky + for a couple of years now. When I rang Sky to ask for an upgrade they quoted me £260.

I'd been with them a quite a few years and threatened to leave.

I got passed to the "Do you want to leave department?", then the "Do you really want to leave department", then the "Are you absolutely sure you want to leave department?" etc, but eventually they gave it me for £60.

Might be worth trying this approach - let us know how you go on.

The L&B needs 2 outlets as you need 2 sky cables to the sky+ box, Your existing sky card needs up grading to Sky+ so you can watch 1 channal and record 2 differant ones all at the same time, Upgrade is free, but I've just gone to multi-room which is an extra tenner........My L&B has 3 outletts..... Sky+ and standard box.......Hope this Helps

When you guys have upgraded i presume they come install all the new equipment. Do they take the original box away or is that yours to keep?

Sky will charge an Instalation fee of around £60, plus the price of the sky+ box, The old box is yours to keep ( I think ) Must also be connected to a Phone line for 12 months.

They came to fit it for us and the guy left the original box - in fact the guy looked disgusted when I asked if he was taking it away. All though saying that, he was a right awkward bloke. When the coffee table needed moving 6 inches, he asked SWMBO to do it and when she asked him to help said 'its not my job to move your furniture:eek:'.

He would probably have quoted Health & Safety at work act!

Daft as it sounds when we had sky fitted in our new bungalow we had to have the dish on the wall next to the front door as the Sky man was not Insured to go up a ladder over 6 foot, I would have liked the dish on the chimney, " What is the world comming too "

ours has 8 connections :P

talking to mr sky man during our install, we can just buy sky+ boxes off ebay and get sky+ in place of regular sky for no extra charge - but that might be cos we too have multiroom/HD

unlike cable, you own the sky box which is why the original box gets left behind. whilst he's right that it's not his job to move your furniture, you'd think common courtesy/good manners would mean he would  :thumbdwn:

Tell me about it i have a relative that works in the Health & Safety Dept of the council. Am surprised the councils get any work done at all the way they go on. It will soon be that we wont be allowed to leave our front doors just in case a meteor falls out the sky and hits us. :rofl:Its all too much these days.

Did he put a harness on to climb the ladder? Our sky man spent ages putting his harness on, then climbed the ladder and had nothing to attach himself too:rofl:! Health & Safety gone mad

My engineer did that. He was about 6ft up the ladder, hi Vis, hard hat, harnesses etc. It's not them, its the insurance companies mainly that won't insure employees unless they wear PPE and take all the safety precautions. We had a thing locally a while ago where council workers couldnt attach signs that required the use of a ladder until they had completed training. Anyway..... BTT :)

Laugh as I read this, a sattelite engineer working opposite my place of work today.

Put on full mountaineering type harnesses, attatched to top of ladder, nothing attatching

ladder to wall, in event of falling he takes ladder with him:confused:

the sky man that did ours said i didn't go on the roof did i? ;)

and its an LNB by the way :)

4 way LNB's can be had for about a tenner off ebay easily and boxes go for £50-80 normally :)

you don't need sky to do anything at all really, simply put the cable in place, plug it in and call sky to say you've changed the box and could you get sky+ activated which should cost you nothing.

Mine turned up in jeans and trainers and was up and down the ladder in a jiffy, whinged whehen I asked for a 4 way connector rather than 2 and got positively grumpy when I wouldn't let him drill an extra hole in the wall for the second lead and made him use dual core cable. He did point out afterwards that as a private contractor he only got paid a fixed price per install so the cheaper the components he could use the more he made, which from the way he was slagging off sky was not a lot
