Driving in america

Featured Replies

Well tomorrow I will be driving in America for the first time. I'm starting to brick it as I've never driven abroad and I'll be driving an automatic for the 2nd time in my life:O. I keep telling myself it will be easy as it looks in the films but has anyone got any tips???

Stay to the right, and dont speed ;)

In America we were told if you are on a multiway highway and are just cruising, be a lane hog in one of the middle lanes and just stick to it. Its against my principles but worked well enough.

it is as easy as it looks.

You can turn right at a red light, as long as the way is clear.

When you get to a stop sign, do just that stop dead. if you treat it as a give way the local police may have a word.

If you are stopped by the police, DO NOT get out of the car. Stay in the car with your hands in view (eg. on the steering wheel).

I'd heard that, seems very strange and I think I'll struggle to remember that for the first week.

I've driven in America, and this is exacly the advice I was going to offer.... also some stated require you to have all your documentation with you all the time...

I would also add, that well its easy enough to follow the other people... be carefull if its late and there's no traffic around... and you've just pulled out of a petrol station, and your mind is on "auto-pilot" as this is the time when you're likley to simply drive on the left! lol....

Oh hell yeah!! Did just that on the first year I drove in Florida. The only other things I'd add is have dollar bills and quarters handy for the toll roads. The main roads or interstates may not have all the junctions numbered as you may expect in the UK, be aware of this. If you get stopped by a State Trooper, you are getting a ticket no matter what.

If your rental company offer a sat nav, have one. It will help  Above all else try to relax and go with the flow. Enjoy ;)
