Genuine Skoda Towbar Electrics

Featured Replies

I am about to fit a towbar to my Fabia and have bought the genuine Skoda Swan neck (not detachable) bar.

However I was not planning on buying hte genuine electrics kit as I considered the cost of this compared to a single socket and some scotch locks was far too much, and I have no problems doing hte electrics myself.

My question is that on the Skoda towbar, the drop down flap for the electrics doesn not allow the cable to exit out of the back of the plate as it does on all standard sockets.

I have looked at the stnadard socket I have and there is pelnty of room to allow the cable to exit out of the top, bottom or side, but until I get it fitted I do not know where would be the best place to have the cable exit.

Does anyone have a genuine electrics fitted to their Fabia (or I assume the Octavia is the same) and could you let me know where the cable exits the socket, better still are there any photos of the genuine kit fitted. As I would like to get this sorted before I remove the bumper to fit the towbar and get the whole lot done in one go but want to make sure I do not do anything which will affect the drop down flap.

Cheers

Don't know if your Fabia is a vRS or not, but if it is, it's not homologated to tow. It would be illegal to fit a towbar to a vRS and would void your insurance and possibly get you in trouble with the boys in blue if stopped. Sorry if i've put a spanner in the works. If your car is a vRS, look at your V5 document and you'll see no tow weights listed.

I do fully understand all the issues regarding fitting a towbar to a vRS regarding the type approval, however my question is not regarding the fitting of a bar to a vRS, it was to do with the electrics kit, and the routing of the cable

Hope you get it fitted ok!

Hi, i have just fitted a tow bar to my Octavia and the wiring comes out the side of the socket, when it is in the "in use" position the wires come out the top and the socket cover hinges on the left.

I hope that helps

Got the towbar fitted tonight and it fits a treat, modified a standard 7 pin socket for the cable to come out of the side, and then out the bottom when not in use.

Looks pretty neat and all that is left to do is fo the final connections in the back of the light cluster.

The bumper cut is only right on the bottom of the bumber and the swan neck fits nicely round the vRS bumper meaning that if required the bar can be remover with no visible cuts to the bumber.

Hope you get it fitted ok!

I would be very interested to know how your insurer views this mod.

With all the non declared "other" mods to some cars on here id say a towbar would be the last of there worries!
