VAG TDi engines

Featured Replies

Hi all, I don't know what engines came in Skoda's on the diesel front as I've never taken an interest in them before. Now I want to get rid of my Octavia RS and get possibly a MK4 Golf. I know these came with a few diferent variations on the 1.9 TDi lump, I was just wondering what the differences were between the 110BHP engines and the 130BHP ones? Is it like the 20v Turbo's in the TT, 180BHP engine is quite a lot different to the 225BHP or is it not such a big difference with these? Obviously I'd like to get one of the PD150 engined cars but I think they'll be out of my budget, but 130's might be acheivable, 110's should be okay.

The 110 cars were conventional direct injection ie an injection pump and pipes to the injectors. while the 115, 130 and 150 were pumpe duse which means four camshaft driven high pressure plunge pump/injectors. The 130 bhp engine is said to be the best, VW overstretched it with the 150 and I have heard that this engine is a bit troublesome. 130 plenty fast enough even in a big Supurb:).

Make sure that if it is a Pumpe Duse that it has been run on the correct 505.01 5w40 engine oil though. This is absolutely essential.

So how do the PD engines differ from each other? What are the service intervals on these engines?

I see the pd130 being the 1.8t 150bhp and the pd150 being the 1.8t 225bhp in the skoda range, ie, if you start tuning the pd130 you will get about the same final output as you would out of the pd150 therefore the bigger gain can be had out of the pd130. A mate of mine has a Seat Leon FR PD150 and when the turbo spools up it's very brutal compared to pd130.

the PD130 can be run on Long Life servicing if it's not on long life its 10,000miles or 12months, I don't know about the other PD engines, I assume they can all be run on Long Life

My Fab vRS is 10K Oil Servive intervals!

Thats a Fabia thing rather than an engine thing.

So, does anybody know what seperates all the PD's? Lummox?

Erm, from my little knowledge on he subject.

Main types of Mk4 Golf diesel (off the top of my head)

1.9 SDi 75bhp (iirc)

1.9 TDi 90bhp (non PD)

1.9 TDi 110bhp (non PD, very good though, not a bad choice, go for ever)

1.9 TDi 100bhp (ATD engine, same as Fabia, not bad, smaller turbo and pipework, five speed box

1.9 TDi 115 bhp, first incarnation of PD engine, some issues on earliers cars, recalls on tensioning roller stud in heads, six speed gearbox

1.9 TDi 130bhp ASZ similar to Fabia vRS engine, six speed box,

1.9 TDi 150 bhp ARL engine, FMIC, different injectors (IIRC) remaps well. Look out for rattly engines, missing finish on the tappets leads to premature camshaft wear/tappet failure costs a fair whack to put right, nice engine though to drive IMHO. Available in Anni edition and high spec hatch

Limited knowledge, eh!? So the PD115 or 130 are both pretty good engines? I had noticed the PD130 tends to have the 6 speed box, I guess if I can, that would be the one to go for out of the two?

I'd have a 130 over the 115.

I guess I'll have to see what else I can scrape together after flogging the RS! Anyone want to buy a private plate...

If budget is smaller then there really is nothing wrong with a 110 non PD, bullet proof cars. Only down side is in a MK4 Golf they will be fairly early ones.

Too early to take advantage of the cheaper tax?

depends on what you want. I would persoanally have a hunt about for a tidy 110, grab yourself a Hopa unit or similar and enjoy it. They dont go bad at all.

  • Author

What's a HOPA unit!?

Your sig is true, you do be helpfull!

Hopa unit is a tuning box that plugs in line with the pump ans gives you an extra 20bhp or so. Bit more refined than a resistor mod, not as techincal as a remap.

Ah, right. From having a quick look on the 'Trader a reasonable mileage PD130 is going to be easier to find than a 110. Again, it really depends on how much extra cash I can scrape together to add to the vRS money. I just hoope I don't end up having to settle for my second choice at the mo, a 306 HDI...

I would expect the 110 and the 130 to be fairly similar to drive.

In my experience between the 130 and 150, i would take the 130 because its more refined. the smaller turbo spools up quicker and i rekon in real-world driving would be faster than the 150.

Plus allegedly Audi wouldnt use the 150 because of its refinement...

what about an octy diesel, ive got a 110 dont go too bad at all and economy is out of this world, theres a 130 lauren and klement in the for sale section for 5k

IIRC the SDI is only 64 BHP. Right on about the 110 engine. Apparently 115s have a reputation for head gaskets...

I would expect the 110 and the 130 to be fairly similar to drive.

The 130 has noticeably more pull and revs a bit better. The 110 is a bit more economical IME though.

Don't think I'll be buying another Skoda for a really long time, long enough to forget what an absolute nightmare this one has been. I know they're all the same underneath, I guess it's a psychological thing, I just won't have another out of principal at the moment. It's like I've had two fords, both were crap so I won't risk a third.

Yes, but Lummox is right about the 110.

What has put you off? Haven't seen earlier threads but the police use mark 1 Octy VRsS wagons round my way and they have told me they are bullet proof. I you have a psycological thing with Skoda try a Seat Ibiza FR with the 130 engine, a rebodied Fabia VRS.
