DSG gearbox torque limit..

Featured Replies

I was just reading about the new DSG gearbox and saw that the tourque limit on them is 350 Nm. Seeing that they will be available on the new Octavia 2.0 TDI (140 bhp) with a quoted torque of 320 Nm, does this mean that a remap on the 2.0 TDI with DSG could kill the DSG?? In my current car 1.9 TDI (180bhp) i am currently pushing 395 Nm, how much is the tolerance on the current 6 speed manual gearbox??

There is an interesting explanation of the DSG gearbox here.

i have read quite a bit about the dsg gearbox, the thing that puzzles me is the limit that they have imposed on it. Being not able to handle more than 350 Nm means that a simple remap of the 2.0 TDI will bring the torque above specs (ie you are risking breaking a reaally expensive gearbox). I was reading over at the TT forum that there is a mechanism that will hinder any torque above 350 Nm through the gearbox. Why has Audi done this??? What is the limit on the current 6 speed gearbox found on the TDI?? Is the DSG gearbox really that fragile that it won't risk running anymore than 350 Nm through it?? I can't see a 180 bhp+ diesel with DSG which is what I was hoping for.....

When we reprogramme the TT V6 DSG box we have to impose a torque limit to the map to prevent damage.

are there any there possible way of strengthening the box??

Not too my knowledge, the boxes are sealed and thats it. Any problem with a DSG box and its replaced as a complete unit.

cheers for all the info, i guess 340-350 Nm isn't too bad

Even Audi dealers are not allowed to fiddle with DSG box's - anything that's internal the box gets taken out and replaced - old unit returned for checking by Audi Tech

So therfore anyone that wants to remap, will buy the car without the DSG box !

but as ross said, the remap could be torque limited. I guess the hard thing would be (at least for the diesel guys, as it's easier to hit the torque limit) to choose whether the DSG is worth over the torque. Time will tell..

Had my first drive of an A3 2.0Tdi S-Line DSG on Sunday...... just one thing........WOW! -- it was absolutely amazing.

I wasn't expecting much - having driven the Manual variant the thought of an Automatic(albeit a clever one) didn't thrill me - but the 2.0 TDi is so suited to DSG, it really transforms the car - when changing gear its stays within peak torque and therefor flies -- and it still blips the throttle on downshifts when using the paddles -- I was one very impressed bunny.

I am waiting to order the elegance 2.0 TDI with DSG on it :D , unfortunately it won't be in norway until start of 2005 :( , and the dealer told me that it will cost over

The Non-Audi VAG Group cars will only be getting stick versions for a while, although I believe they will be optional at a later date.
