Numberplates in pics

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I get my new Octy vRS tomorrow all being well & thought I might post some pictures.

I notice a lot of people posting pictures obscure the numberplates - I just wondered - why would people do this - what is everyone afraid of?

Phil

I think in case it get pinched is one of the main reasons.

No specific threat, but it could help prevent identity theft etc.

Also, if you have (or are considering) any modifications, it might be best that Skoda UK (who have been known to spy on here) can't link them to a particular car and thereby void the warranty

Also, have been cases whereby people can use your numberplate on a car of the same spec and then ignore speed cameras, congestion charges etc. But, because the car is registered to a similar car, the police don't pick it up.

Thanks for thoughts. I'm not sure how a numberplate would help the car get nicked - most people wouldn't be able to get an address for a numberplate, right?

As for the Skoda snooping - that's definitely a creditable worry - not even got my new toy yet (first Skoda for me) and already thinking about remapping!!

11.5 hours to go......

Oooh now that's a good point - really glad I asked the question, but a little sad I can't show-off the private plate - never had one before either!!:(

Just make sure you turn up at a few meets then so we can see it.

A few years ago I read Subaru used to send people to track days make a note of the registrations then write to the owners informing them that there warranty is now invalid!

Not too sure how true that is though..

Interesting - I used to have a Scooby, but I never tracked it. On the subject of remaps my local Scooby garage advised me to have one done - they said the inspectors from Subaru occasionally come down and look at cars needing extensive warranty repairs but they do not bring equipment that could find remaps. He said they'd have to send it to the main factory for that & they never do. Warranty was therefore not an issue. In the end I only changed my exhaust (although this made loads of difference actually) - I was advised I'd only forefeited the warranty on my old exhaust.

Phil

Plate cloning is probably the major reason, and probably the one most likely to happen. I wouldn't risk it, personally.

What about just taking the car out for a drive though? No extra equipment required :)

I understand the idea, but that happened to SWMBO's car a few years ago, without any pics being online.

After all, your numberplate is visible the whole time your car is outside...

that is true but i have heard of people looking up autotrader and car sites to get plates of a similar car, its quick and easy for them as the get a plate from another part of the country making it less likely to spot someone using ur plate

True, but with the pics on the internet, you open up a much larger audience across the whole of the UK rather than just locally where the car is used. This increases the chances of cloning by a much larger magnitude.

What's there to think about? ;)

Way i see it is anybody can get your number from your car sitting on the street so pretty pointless. even if they do clone your car your still legal and thats all that counts

I think blanking out plates is a good idea, maybe not just for clonning. Say someone gets really upset at you for some reason if they now your reg number then they could easy pick it out and cause harm to it, and know where you live. Just a thought.

Ahh like a Jumped up Keyboard warrior lets say... who has no people skills and is a hermit but comes out only to seek revenge :P

That is true, but the person needs to go past your house, or at least see your car on the road, so there is more of a chance they'll be local and you'll see their car with the same number plate as you. However, someone looking on the internet could see your car and your plate in a completely different part of the country. The first you know about it is when the police knock on your door, or pull you over or you suddenly start getting pictures of the rear of your car demanding money.

IIRC a couple of people on Briskoda found their plates cloned, ask them if it being legal was all that counts.

It could also end up for sale on Ebay.

Thanks for all the responses - I've gone with a compromise of showing half my numberplate - the bit that says 'VRS' !!!!

Nice! Nice colour too.

Best idea I think. Oh and a nice car there.

Thanks for the compliments guys, I'm really chuffed with it & pleased I went for that colour. My son said 'red', my daughter said 'yellow', my head said 'silver' but my heart said 'vRS blue!!!'

Blue is the colour tbh. What did Karen say?
