Please help with "dash green led" - OFF button modified on Climatronic

Featured Replies

As continuing with "Climatronic on/off button", my first step was, after enable of the button, to buy on eBay used GolfV climatronic unit and use the original "OFF" button.

Yesterday I've deassembled that GolfV unit, as I was keeping it in the draw, so any damage wouldn't metter.

It was so easy to take everything apart. I wanted to look inside to see if I can put the LED to iluminate OFF button when lights were on. It's very ease and I work a lot with electronics, so I'd solder it easily.

Here comes the problem. I looked on eBay, searching for:

"Dash Green Led"

and search gave me only led replacements for dash bulbs.

Then I've tried:

"Green Led"

and got thousands of items. So, I'm lost now. I want so badly to get that led. How to call it? How to search? Is there a specific name for that led?

Please, help.

Anyone?

All the buttons down there are orange anyway mate, so why not just get an orange LED.

I assume the VW's use orange LED's too so just steal that one?

No, the idea is to iluminate the button during the night, when lights are on. As OFF button has only letters and not hole for orange light, I need green led.

In the meantime I've discovered that led is called SMD, but now I have other problem. There are many types of SMD leds in size I need. Difference is voltage and luminosity. I guess those two things would be difficult to discover.

Ahh got you.

SMD is not the bulb it stands for Surface Mount Device.

You want a Surface Mount LED, so your best bet would be to get one from a part from a written off car or desolder another and then do a search on the part number from it.

I'll be very interested if you do find what it is :)

Well, it's so small. It's like 3x2mm and 0,5mm of thickness. So, no way of reading any part number. I have GolfV climatronic in my hand right now. It's even hard to see polarity of SMD but possible. I see it's gonna be long way to go. I'm sure somebody on this forum has already made it or at least changed the blown led. Maybe I'll get lucky with someones help.

Still looking, so far found out on some forums that they are 3,5V 200mcd.

SAD NEWS

Pins on the bord are not powered, so no need of trying further. I've checked with voltmeter, no power. I've checked on working LEDs, it showed 1.7V. Then I took one led from the GolfV board, soldered cable on it, tested it on 2V transformer, it was working well, touched board pins (I mean the place where LED should be soldered), didn't light up. Checked again on transformer, working well. Even tried swapping the pins (I was sure I made it right way first time), still nothing.

So, CONCLUSION:

No need for thinking of soldering LED for OFF button, pins on the board are not powered.

I don't want to look through the board. Probably, there is one resistor missing but even if I find it by comparing the Octy board with GolfV board, resistor is SMD so it would be messing too much with the board and soldering arround. I won't go further.
