Octavia 2, timing belt change

Featured Replies

Would any kind soul out there have experience changing the timing belt, the tensioner pulley(s) and water pump on the 1.9TDi BKC model engine Octavia. I'm going to do it myself as The garages in Ireland are charging an absolute fortune for what is only 5 hrs work. I've changed these on many small cars but am told that the whole front grille has to come off the Passat and A4 which are similar engines.

many thanks.

The octavia is different to the superb/passat/a4.

I thought that Octavia II's had a timing chain as opposed to the snappable belt; I assume i'm wrong, or is it certain models?

They are all belts. IIRC the front has to come off the superb due to the engine orientation. The octavia having a transverse engine proberbly makes things more difficult.

The belt change interval is 80K/4 years for diesel and 60K/4 years for petrol.

What's the IIRC thing I keep seeing? I don't know what it stands for.

If I Remember Correctly

I have done hundreds of them belts. As it goes they are pretty easy, the mounting on the side of the engine can give you a bit of grief. Locking tools ensure nothing moves and the tensioner has a very clear pointer on it.

Oh and the cambelt is not at the front of the engine, so nothing gets touched at the front.

And book time depending on the mounting is around 3 hours.

and the IIRC bit?

Just noticed you're obviously a dubber like me Lummox?? I'm gonna be selling my aubergine Edition One G60 once I get the octy. Times, they are a changing!

Top of post 6 mate

If I Remember Correctly (IIRC)

And yes Im a dubber by day and by night (VW techie). Had a Fabia vRS amongst many other Skodas and VAG cars, now running a Golf 20vt and B4 Passat TD.

Ah, sorry, missed that.

With a dog and possible family in the next few years, I couldn't really warrant having a 3-door G60 as an everycar so I plumped for a 1.8t octy: hope I won't regret it! From speaking to a few people, I ca chip it to 190 pretty easily and it's a lot bigger and spacious as well as being a LOT more comfortable and a LOOOOOT quieter! 250 miles to yorkshire in a car that has bolstered recaros and 4 silencers that still sounds permanently throaty is NOT fun!

I got the Passat that does 800 miles to a tank of fuel and though it clatters along she rides ok. The wifes car although a Ford (spit) is safe enough for the wife and daughter.

The Golf is a self indulgent project and hobby.

Yeah, kinda falling out of love with working on my golf cos as i've gotten older, I haven't as much time to fiddle with it so i've reached that point where I have to move on. Love driving it, but wish I could open the garage door every day and the magic elves had cleaned ad serviced overnight just for my driving pleasure.

er, not gonna happen! lol

Just not the same enthusiasm I had for working on cars when I was a teenager/early twenties!

Also, I think that having a house now and having to work on that is where the effort had shifted to so I don't have the energy to **** about with a car.

Im 32 next month, play with cars all day for customers and then play with mine at weekends.

Anyhow enough off topic banter!

I did the timing belt myself, saved approx €700( things are very expensive in Ireland). thanks for the pointers on how it goes, it took 6 hrs but that was taking it slowly. You done need these special locking tools a 6 mm long bolt locks the camshaft pulley and a bottle of tippex does the job foe the crank pulley. The hardest part is the mounting bracket which is hard to get off you have to jack up the endine higher than normal to get a socket on the bolt.

Hi All,

I've just had my first service on a 1.6 FSI and the mechanic tell me that the car (56 reg) is fitted with a timing chain not belt.

I've taken the front off a VW mk4 golf, and the assembly on my skoda looks similar (wheel arch screws, several other bolts and screws, some of the grilles then are clicked out). I found instructions with pics on a US website
