A Favorit Drving Newbie

Featured Replies

Hi everyone, I joined the community recently and thought it was about time that I posted and said hello.

I have had several different Skoda's over the years, all bought secondhand, my first was a 1981 105S on an X plate in hipberry red if I remember rightly, it came with minilite wheels and black go faster stripes and the round headlamps which I had about 1989, this was probably the most fun of any car I have owned and was my first car too.

I went all over the country in her and remember driving up from Kent to Kings Lynn to a Skoda GB open day with the Skoda Owners Club, and after hammering it back to Kent I drove up to Scarborough, North Yorkshire that evening to start my holiday.

As it was an original series Estelle, the wheel track was narrower than the later Estelle 2 and if pushed it would virtually go round roundabouts sideways..great fun and still regarded fondly by my friends as a bit of a legend :-> fond memories.

My father wondered why I had bought one of these cars, but appreciating ease of home maintenance and good traditional engineering he too soon joined the fold, with a V reg 120LS in forest green and the double round headlamps.

My 105S was later part ex'ed for the poor mans Porsche, the black 130 Rapid on an F plate, another classic.

Very reliable like the 105S but I remember on one occasion taking my mother shopping over in Essex and returning to Kent after leaving the Dartford tunnel and whilst going along the motorway the core plug blew..coolant and steam everywhere. 50p later from the Skodas dealer I had a new core plug which was fitted with a good heavy blow from a hammer kind if flattening the concave core plug. End of problem.

This was later followed by a 136LS Favorit on a K plate and then in the late 90's I defected and have had a Daewoo Nexia and several Fiats - Cinquecento and Sceicento Sportings and most recently a Fiat Punto Diesel.

As for my father, he later had a beautiful china blue special edition 130 Estelle on a D plate, commemorating 21 years of Skoda GB, this even came with a certificate. Then this was later replaced by a Carribean green Favorit LXie on a M plate, one of the last series of Favorits made.

Unfortunately more poor father has been diagnosed with Parkinsons disease and has had to surrender his driving licence, this came at the same time as my Fiat giving up resulting in £930 of work being required (engine management modual etc), with rising prices all round this was a bill I could of really done without, but as with all modern cars, they are not something you can work on yourself and labour is expensive. It is now well again but have decided to sell it.

My father recently has given me his Favorit and this has reawakened the skoda fan in me.he is delighted to keep it in the family. It has only done 56,000miles so still a youngster and I have been doing my daily 60mile round trip to work in her, great fun. I have now started a programme of treating her to a new set of plugs (not touched in 5 years), oil change, air cleaner, battery and a new set of door speakers (passenger speaker was knackered). If I look after her I am sure she will look after me :->

Best regards,

Steve
