73k service

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

Just had my 73k service, I provided my oil and it came to £126! £24 for parts (oil filter, sump plug, brake cleaner, engine flush, screen wash, grease and waste) and £81 for labour... I'm tempted to start taking it to an independent or start doing most of myself.

Both of the front wishbones bushes are worn and there is some play in the roll bar bushes apparently.

They recommend not going for the uprated poly bushes as they will vibrate the **** out of me.

Got the Silkolene Pro S 5w-40 in there and the engine def sounds quiter and a little healthier I think

Not sure of the point of this thread either.... :P

Fak, its not like its rocket science either - everything in this country is a rip off but we just bend over and take it.

To make it worse if you DIY you have no service history and trying to sell it would be a nightmare.

I agree Malc, everything has got expensive and 9/10 i'm not happy with it.

Prime example there are muddy paw prints ALL over my car from a cat from leaving it to get serviced :(

I think i'll be keeping it for another few years so I'll just keep all the receipts etc... so it shouldn't lower the selling value much at all :)

I use an independant now.Uses genuine filters but dosent charge the earth.Last service was £68 ,skoda wanted £180+vat and they are 9 miles away my independant is 1.5 miles and gives me a loan car without any hassle.

Sounds like they got a lot of markup items on there. Grease? For door hinges I guess, Brake cleaner? Did you have brakes done? Engine flush? I really wouldnt bother does more harm than good. This are quite often items that are sold to you regardless, but if you query them on the bill they should take them off as its presumtive selling without your permission. However waste management sometimes needs to be stated on the bill just to show its done. Most places I have worked at though build the cost of consumables into their hourly rate.

I think I'm going to go to that garage you recommended to me next time mate

Yes, they don't clean the previous grease though so the door hinges look a bit of a mess!

I've heard bad things about engine flushes too actually.

:)

I go against the grain and its caused me hassle in the past but I stand firm in my beliefs. I never use white grease on door hinges, I think it looks awful, it dries hard and doesnt actually do anything benifical. A drop of motor oil is far better IMHO. However you cant see motor oil and thats why most places insist we use that white grease crud.

Not on my car matey.

Replacing those wishbone bushes will go a long way towards your wheel hop probs Tom.

I hope so Mart, I gave it a little floor in 1st today and it was really violent so looking to get it sorted. It didn't used to hop before.

Just deciding if I should go the the poly bushes or the standards....

I've done all my own servicing (being an ex-mechanic helps), but as it says above... it's not rocket science.

I've kept all my receipts, so can sell it with full service history, and the new owner can see everything that's been changed, rather than just see some stamp in the service book, and assume everything's been done that should have been.

Wish someone would tell White dove Skoda in wales not to use white grease. Its everywhere on my car.

I agree with you it makes a mess and just sits on the surface,Oil is better because it runs into the hinges and lubricates them.

Just had a thought really, the oil cost me £45 and the £126 service really just performed an oil change.... so I payed £171 for the oil to be changed.

Did I really just do that?

White grease + engine flush + windscreen wash isn't need.

Should've just gone to national tyres mate.

£28.80 for oil and filter change with Castrol Edge and you don't get dirty

Why pay £30 when you can pay £170? :D

Why pay £30, when you can DIY for £15 :rofl:.

The oil they use though is a fully synthetic and you cant buy it for that much. Man, you got stung there though for the service, ethos.

Hiya fellas

I agree that independants are far better.

My brother is a main dealer mechanic and says that you get worse service from a main dealer than you would at your local back street garage.

My recommenadtion is to use OE parts and just have the service book stamped up. Keep all bills as proof for potential buyers.

Once you find a local garage they tend to get cheaper with return custom too.... much more trustworthy too I think

Cheers :D

The oil who uses?

At my last service they used 10w/40 semi and I could def tell the difference. It sounded rougher and was a bit noiser.

This new oil seems ALOT smoother and the "rattles" have stopped.

Totally got stung, I agree.... independent next time

I think I know the garage I'll be going to next, has been recommended by two people randomly so far and it's pretty close to me!

Sorry to ask YET again about this bloody bushes, but are these the ones I need from the my first post;

VAG - Lower Engine Support Bracket Bushes - Street by PRI Racing Ltd. buy online

Does say which ARB ones I need though :(

VAG - Front - Anti Roll Bar to Chassis Bushes by PRI Racing Ltd. buy online

or/and;

VAG - Front - Anti Roll Bar Link Bushes by PRI Racing Ltd. buy online

Bloody hell, adds up.

Are these much to get fitted? Suppose I'm best off buying them sooner rather than later....

The first 2 are the right ones. On the second page you linked you need to select 19mm in the drop down box.

You could fit both the arb and the dog bone mount your self with a jack and some axle stands.

Cool thanks mate :)

Is it one bush per side for the ARB?

Yep there will be 2 in the pack.
