calculating time remaining...

Featured Replies

whenever i delete anything on my vista machine i get this box that pops up saying "calculating time remaining" and it just gets stuck on it.ive tried the windows download from their site for this problem but it hasnt made any difference. its only started since one of the recent vista updates and even by doing a return to point it wont go. can anyone help or does anyone haveany ideas what to try now??

I have seen this, and the fix is in service pack 1. Never seen it since installing that.

it started about 3 weeks ago after the laptop decided to download and install a load of updates.

Had a quick looksee and other than applying the patch (one or two mentions of router / crossover problems) there seems to be no explanation.

I suggest XP :P:thumbup:

Yes, the calculating time remaining think is a known fault... SP1 will sort it :)

...well proven, faster, more efficient etc :P

Funny how this advertising malarky hooks people

When you had your Fabby vRs would you have even looked at a 100bhp Essex boys Astra - funny you just installed the equivalent. Ner.

I notice the 'modifier' :P

The only thing that is a real pain is that some of my ‘older’ software doesn’t run on it, not that they are copies or anything

i had the choice of free vista or 60 quid or so for xp when i got the laptop so i went for the newer one as it was free, otherwise i would have kept with xp. i beleive the sp1 is already on here and think thats when the problem started. think i might send dell and email as its covered by them for a year or two.

Would it not be worth downloading Vista sp1 and running the upgrade ?

Download details: Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Five Language Standalone (KB936330)

434.5 MB

I know you think you have sp1 etc but the Auto Updates might have freaked out / conflicted in some way.

There's one - only one feature I like in Vista - the Explorer address bar that is reminiscent of an old Atari ot Amiga feature in that you can go quickly go back up the 'tree'.

Now someone had released a freeware proggy for XP that does just this.

One poss solution here

thanks to the people here I've found a solution that works for me on Vista Home Premium... a combination of turning Remote Differential Compression off (see this link http://www.thinktechno.com/2007/09/04/how-to-fix-the-slow-file-transfers-problem-in-windows-vista/ ) and using Tera Copy program...latter lets you see the transfer rate at least. Don't know whether turning off the RDC has any unintended side effects yet.

How to fix the slow file transfers problem in Windows Vista! | Thinktechno.com

"

I too have been reading this post and have been ready to give up. I disabled the service 'Windows Seaech' and now file operations that took 20-30 seconds are instant. "

Anyway, the Vista pc has all the hotfixes mentioned in the threads leading to this post (I've been following it for a while) without affecting the problem at all; it was switching the NIC to 100/Half Duplex that solved the issue for me!?! The Vista PC is now happily copying at 6.5-7mb/s across the network, and no excessive waits for calculating times either - deletes, copies, moves are all happening pretty much immediately.

This same thing happened to me. I called tech support. He said this was a virus that caused this problem because if you reboot in safe-mode and try to move-delete-add a file it doesn't do it. So I would recommend trying to get rid of the virus (name unknown) or as I did completely re-install Vista. Mine works good as new and fast now. Good luck!

its got nothing to do with the network as it does it connected or unconnected on my network or swmbo's. i will try the others. it isnt a virus as ive virus scanned and spyware scanned too.
