Fined!

Featured Replies

Yeah, Yeah, we all know that..........

Your right, 2 wrongs dont make a right but more of a plausable excuse in modern cars than not realising you had put them on.

And can we all absolutley guarantee that we have NEVER ever used the headlights to "flash" people out of a junction.........

Or, flash to warn of a talivan.........

Or, flash to someone you know..............

Really........ you have never done that?

Your either a liar or the worlds best driver, but hey, you already knew that.

Steve

Flashing to warn someone of a Greed Camera is using your headlights to warn others of a hazard, much the same as you would if, for example, you just passed horses on a lane, come round a corner and see someone coming the other way at high speed. You have to be careful with this. In a country lane near Brentwood last year, I passed a copper on a motorcycle sat by the side of the road with a camera of some sort, facing the oncoming traffic. Just around the corner was a speed trap van (in a place where only pretty fast stuff could even reach 60mph from the bend). I believe this was in fact a staged trap to catch people warning others of the trap.

I have never flash my lights for any of the other stuff you mention.

and you should never flash your lights to let someone cross in front of you as you are liable should something go wrong. A friend of mine was coming to some traffic lights which were just turning to red and he flashed to let the pedestrian know he was stopping so the pedestrian stepped out and a car in the inside lane didn't stop and ran the pedestrian over, the driver who hit the pedestrian was cleared of dangerous driving as the light's weren't at red and my mate was taken to the cleaners by the pedestrian as my mate indicated it was safe for the pedestrian to cross the road.

ive noticed a big rise in people using fogs in clear good visability conditions, mainly ch@vs and a big rise in bmw/merc drivers showing off their people carriers.

only on while i took the picture.:D

Most cars have a little light on the dash to tell you the front or rear fogs are on.

I know my little Felly does.

Most BMWs with Xenons have the option of running lights whilst the engine is on (Angel eyes). These are actually slightly less bright than ordinary sidelights.

Can I ask how one would put on fog lights on a Fabia?

The reason I ask is on many cars made in the last 10 years you cant leave them on from the last time you used them, ie, they self cancel. So, if that is the case then either you knowingly put them on OR you dont know how to operate your cars controls properly.

As you can tell, I dont have much sympathy for this and saying you didnt know you had them on infront of a copper would make them feel the same as it shows a little incompetence.

A better response would be.......

"Ah, sorry officer, I just past someone a few moments ago with their fogs on so as its a great annoyance I thought I would give them a quick flash or two with mine to point out the error of their ways, I must not of switched them off when I did that. Im ever so sorry."

You are right in that its very unusual to get fined, plod would usually use things like this as an excuse to stop you (they need an offence, they cant just randomly stop people) and check you out. Normally, they would of just slapped your wrist. Either she was having a bad day, or you upset her, maybe without knowing. Many plod use the "attitude test" on their customers. First 5 seconds or so is enough to decide whats gonna happen to you.

I agree driving with fogs is asking for it. How ma times do you think that the police hear "I didnt know they where on!" Sounds like the lesson has been learnt though. With regards to your annoyance at the information you where given, I think that people are verbeing very unforgiving. I doubt very much you all know everything there is to know in your proffessions!

Also no offence is actually required i order to stop a vehicle. Police can stop any vehicle on any road.

Operation of the foglights depends on the switchgear used really.

On my Astra Ds(?) 1998> foglights were a momentary switch with a tell-tale lamp. Next time you started the car, the lights defaulted to "OFF".

With the Fabia, the foglights are a 2 pull arrangement on the main light switch. They're either ON or OFF depending on the position of the switch.

IMO the Vauxhall way is better.

The fog lights are also turned off automatically when the light switch is turned off?

I struggle to see how you think the Vauxhall way is better when they both start as being off and have to be manually turned on each time - this is to stop the numpty's leaving them on.

I really dislike the current trend amongst manufacturers of putting both front and rear fogs on the same switch, especially as it is the fronts which come on first.

If visibility is poor enough for me to be running them and I catch someone up I want to turn off the fronts and just leave the rears on so that when I too get caught people are aware that I'm there. :(

You need to change to a different German marque;), mine lets you do it the old way and turn off the fronts independently:)

Skodas, VW and Audi do it the crap way too :(

But how could he be taken to the cleaners if all he was doing was (at least theoretically) following the instructions in the highway code (as posted above)...

Flashing lights. Only flash your lights to let other road users know that you are there. Do not flash your lights to convey any other message or intimidate other road users.

Never assume that flashing lights is a signal inviting you to proceed. Use your own judgement and proceed carefully.

It would depend on how the statements were interpreted.

In theory, the flashing of the headlights in this instance would not be used to signal to the pedestrian that you are there, but would most likely be taken as it was meant. As the guy flashed his lights, it was down to him that the pedestrian stepped off the kerb. Of course the pedestrian should have known better, but can claim to have been mislead into crossing.

Unfortunately, pedestrians seem to be absolved of taking reasonable levels of responsibility for their own safety. If you confuse one, the blame will stop in your insurance claim history.

As with any signal we give, it should be considered how the signal will be interpreted given the circumstances before giving the signal.

I've been told that in Germany if you cross at a non-designated crossing and cause an accident, the costs are taken out of your estate if you die and you're sued if you live.

He flashed to let the pedistrian know he was stopping and the car in the inside lane didn't stop which hit the pedstrian.

He's never done it since, doesn't even flash to let traffic pull out either.
