I Need Help!!!!!!!

Featured Replies

just to put you in the picture

a couple of weeks ago my octavia rs developed a rather noisey engine (more like a diesel) any after a few miles it cut out and would not start again

any way i booked the car in with a local garage that specialize in vag cars in general

he called me after a few hours and told me he had found the fault and it was the cam shaft alignement sensor

the sensor has now been replaced and guess what the fault is still there

the garage has told me it could be the ecu or a wiring fault and if it is he cannot fix it

so any help would be appreciated in what you would do in these circumstances

there is a garage in loughborough lion garage who i would have thought would be able to sort it out

so should i cut my losses and take it there

Certainly sounds like the timing is out but i cant understand why the garage cannot fix it if its the ECU? Likewise the wiring loom, it will be VERY expensive with either of the 2 but still a viable repair surely?

Darren

My guess would be:

Bad news I'm afraid, it sounds as though the oil pressure is low, with the noise and as the the camshaft variable valve timing is hydraulically operated and not getting enough pressure it will throw a fault code. Can you get the actual code that is found?

Get them to do an oil pressure test. You could get them to drop the sump and look for a blocked oil pick up.

That's fairly convincing; Fordfan is a qualified (and pretty good I think) mechanic.

It also sounds like exactly the noise that the 156 I didn't nearly buy was making on start-up. That was down to chronic low oil pressure, and caused wear on the cams...

ok thanks for the advice

but what damage would this have likely caused and what parts need replacing oil pump ect

i will have to do the work myself as at the moment i am in no position to fork out garage prices so any help would be nice :rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

Not really, I have experience of troublesome Skodas and engineering qualifications, plus i came across a similar problem last week on a 4X4 ARX 1.8, noisy engine with an intake cam setpoint over retarded fault. The garage who had it, later phoned me with the oil pressure test results, which from memory were 0.8 bar at idle (OK) and 0.8 bar at 2000 rpm (not OK) should be around 3 bar, they also mentioned that it seemed as though the big ends were knocking as well.

The top end is the first to lose pressure, furthest away from the pump, this will cause extensive tappet rattle as they are not being pumped up. It really depends at what speed it has been run, anything above tickover and the big end (knocking sound) or main bearings (rumbling sound) could be shot.

If you are lucky it may be a blocked oil pick up pipe, if you can drop the sump you will have a better idea. There is plenty of material on the internet with the Audi 1.8s having a problem similar to this.

I am only guessing as to the cause from the symtoms that you describe, noise and apparent camshaft sensor fault, I hope that I am wrong and it is something cheaper/easier to sort out.

so roughly where do you think i should start

should i get myself an engine and use it for spares

also i will be difficult to test the oil preasure as the engine will not start

How are the battery and starter motor? If it will turn over on the starter at a decent speed, has fuel and spark, and still won't start, it's knackered!.

Similarly if the battery and starter are good, but the starter can't spin the engine!

If you PM Lummox, he should be able to help you. If you can source a 1.8T it should not be too hard to swap. He's based down Northants kind of way, so not too far from Leics.
