Anyone remember what happened to my car 1 year ago? Well guess what...

Its Buggered. Again.

This time, its the Gearbox, and once again, i seem to be the only person to have had this type of failure in the UK.

Gearbox had started becoming a bit notchy, and started whining this week - initially didnt think much of the gear change, as my seating position had changed, so could have just felt different like that, and initially dismissed the whine as it wasnt all the time, ie would only happen now and then - and had read of the turbo noises becoming more apparent as they get older

The last 2-3 days though, the whine had become permanent, but limited to 4th/5th gears - lastnight, i smelt hot oil after getting out of the car, and had a look underneath - not good;

DSCF1630.jpg

The Gearbox, Diff, Wishbone, Driveshaft, Undertray etc was covered in Oil

Decided that today i should get it to a Dealer to have a look - they confirmed it - It is Gearbox Oil - Technician then took me out in it, and wasnt happy with the notchiness of the changes, the loud as hell rattling when accelerating with the clutch very slightly depressed and the whine in 4th etc - basically said don't drive it - unsafe if it fails on the Motorway etc - he reckoned there was very little/no oil left in the 'Box, and that it too would be shot by now also

So, its now sat at Yeovil, awaiting it's fate - Skoda and my Lease company have both been told that if this warranty issue becomes a farce like the last one, then they will be keeping the Keys - and won't see me again. Plus they'll be looking at a claim for a refund of all cost put into the vehicle so far, excluding fuel - work have approved this attitude, in fact they have the same.

So, lets hope they get this sorted smoothly, otherwise i'll be looking for something else. Which, TBH, i don't particulary want to do, as i like the Octavia...

Hi

What type of lease do you have, private or company . Bad luck either way.

------------------------------------

Octy 2, 1.9 TDI PD Ambiente 4x4 Combi and Nissan Sunny 2.0 DLX, Company Octy 1.9 TDI Tour Combi.

As we have a private lease, interested to know how it works if one knocks a car back, not that we would want that to ever happen.

Blimey, so not only have you had a Friday car, you have a really ****e Friday car.

Bad luck.

That's not good is it. Hope you get it sorted ok.

Only one in the country you say?

Yep I haven't had a new gear box for problems with it getting notchy and noisy and I don't think Roo did either

New box and associated bits took I think 3 days all in for me, but since then it's behaved well.

My gearbox mounting bearing failed with 4 days left on the warranty (Mk1 octy), that made a large hole in the gearbox casing and a great noise!

Oh dear hope they sort this better than last time.

Not the only one to Fail, but the only one the Dealership here has heard of through the network of dumping its Oil Content then failing... ;)

Will have to wait until next week to hear what the cause is/was - then the plan of action.

The previous comment was a bit tongue in cheek, but sounds like something wasn't done up right when they attached your gear box to your new engine to me. All speculation of course until the garage has looked at it.

Guessed so... :P

Sounds like it may have been related to the Engine refit, the Techy at Loders wasnt entirely convinced as apparently the 'Box is a fully sealed unit, but, what do i know...

So fully sealed I had my first undergo a top up, a couple of oil changes and a internal recon of some description before they fitted a new box

Comments like that from dealers, be it cars or anything else, always make me chuckle.

'Oh sir, it can't leak as it is fully sealed at the factory'

Well, maybe the fully sealed unit isn't, is usually my reply when the thing has failed and chucked its contents on the floor

Hope you get it sorted soon.

Its still sat in the car park in Loders I see....saw it today....the green lizard on the window was looking a bit bored....nice grill colour code though

Chris

thye aren't sealed units as such but from what i know you can remove it from the car without losing any oil :)

the driveshafts bolt on as oppose to slotting in :)

Wicked Nice...

Anywho;

Spoke to Skoda today - The Gearbox has been removed and inspected

I've been assured that the work is being done under Warranty - the 'sealing' between the Bellhousing and the Internals has gone - possibly due to shock load on the mainshaft when the engine dropped, where the bellhousing was kept in place by the GB Mounts.

So, yeah. Should be back in use within the next week-ish. But, We will see.

Hmmmm.

This is starting to sound oh too familiar... :(

Phoned the Dealer up today, to check on progress after the last update - they have been told by Skoda UK to Strip the Gearbox assembly down and then send photos of the failed components - Skoda aren't keen to do the fix on the warranty, though the Dealership is telling them it needs to be done on warranty as there is no sign of any damage (that i could have caused) that could have/has caused the loss of Oil.

So, ill be giving them til midweek to get back to me, and if it's the same situation, ill be getting onto Work to back me up, then contacting the Lease Company and Skoda UK and telling them where to stick it, and claiming a full refund on the cost so far.

The Dealership have been excellent so far.

But Skoda UK as a whole? ABSOLUTE ****e IMO.:finger:

Even if the internals are damaged, thats hardly your fault either!!!!

What are Skoda playing at?

I bet the Lizard is getting really bored now!

Chris

This where you fall foul of Skodas repair gearboxes rather than replace them policy. The dealer will be told to repair it, the repair will be unsatisfactory, then they'll replace it.

Penny pinching......muppets :(

Just got mine back today after almost 3 weeks - Fault? Gearbox! Mine was dragging the clutch even whilst the clutch pedal was fully depressed, this been the 3rd drive related fault the car's suffered (replacement DMF for one that exploded and a new DMF and slave cylinder prior to this)! Was given a Polo 1.2 as the 1st loan car, wow wee! Dealer rang to say that the car was ready after 5 days so went and picked it up told me it needed 'bedding' in as Skoda wouldn't replace the entire gearbox just do a fix around for the known problem. Had the car for approx 3 hours and they got it back as the box was a right mess, lottery for getting the gear you selected, terrible grinding when coasting in reverse, so the dealer hired me a Passat 170 TDI Sport (what a cracking car, know now whats replacing the Octy!) from Enterprise Car Hire as all the loan cars were out, ended up running that for 2 weeks whilst it was being sorted. Why the gearbox wasn't simply replaced god knows it would have been a lot less hassle. Just hope this one holds out as I only have 6,000 miles worth of warranty left on the car which is kinda worrying as the damn thing likes to visit the dealer every 3 months for something doing on it and I'm stuck with it for another 17 months!

Skoda have approved the Warranty Repair today, so will be getting the car back midweek-ish...

Yep VW now do the same. Luckily enough we have a chap at work who is rather ace at gearbox repairs.
