Trade in price - what a laugh!

Featured Replies

Spotted a Skoda garage selling it's Octy 2.0TD Elegance auto demonstrator, 6 months old with 4.5K miles on the clock. Thought the selling price was a bit much as it was only £1400 less than the current OTR price for a new one.

No matter, called them and said I might be interested, depending on what they would give me for my Superb Elegance 2.8v6 auto (with all the extra trimmings) in part exchange.

They called back the next day - trade in value was ONE THIRD of what is listed in Glass's. I think the salesman was a bit taken aback when I genuinely had a mini fit of laughter.

Went to local non-Skoda garage this afternoon. Looked at a couple of non-Skoda options in the same price range as the Octy and guess what? The trade-in price would be be within £100 of what Glass's was listing!

Do some Skoda garages deliberately under value by such a huge amount because they don't want to sell cars

Seems odd to be so far out?

Could he have been quoting the "price to change"

No, def trade-in price.

2.8v6 is 03 reg with 89K and full service history + extras like electric sun roof etc, MOT to March 09, road fund to end of April 09. 4 new tyres have done 5K miles.

Without extras (but allowing for mileage) Glass's quote is £5.8K. Skoda garage offered on the phone £2K

The salesman - between my laughs - thought it was all Gordon Brown's fault

maybe they think they wil have problems selling it with the fine mess mr brown has made of the tax system and how according to todays paper people are going for smaller engined cars.

Yeah i would think they are probably not to keen to take a 2.8 in as a trade and offered you a low price to deter you.

Yes, I think you're right and under such circumstances the guide price goes out the window.

I think a high mileage vehicle with such high CO2 emissions isn't going to be top of a lot of people's wish lists and hence the garage weren't interested in it.

We must remember that dealers are under no obligation to buy our cars off us and any offer is dictated by the old supply and demand issue anyway.

Agreed. But it does seem odd that other independent garages are more or less sticking to Glass's.

maybe the indy garage doesnt know/has not dealt with such a superb before.

I had a similar problem trying to shift the Landy, but got a good deal in the end.

I would say so. The 2.8 is a bit of a white elephant and very difficult to shift retail wise so it would go to a trader.

Luckly my v6 is old enough to just run until it drops. Don't look forward to having to sell if I had to.

The price to change is the important thing when changing cars. A 5 year old gas guzzler that has now been replaced by a new model is not the sort of car that a dealer would find easy to shift. I know it’s a great car:thumbup: and fabulous value for money, but a dealer would probably pass the vehicle on to auction if he felt it would end up over age on his forecourt. When I used to sell we took note of whether the customer was more interested in having his trade-in complimented with a generous offer or after a good discount on the new car. sadly as I am sure you already know, you can’t have it both ways, but it definitely pays to shop around.

Oops it took me so long to reply, I now see Lummox has beaten me to it.

Interesting to note tho that the Skoda site has 2.8 V6s '04s @ £10995 and '05s at £11695 (albeit with lower mileages natch). Big difference when its £2K p/x for an 03!

As someone mentioned, perhaps the best idea is to keep running them until they're ready for the scrap heap. Just think of the depreciation you would save not having bought a replacement!

The quote given to you isnt a reflection on your cars worth exactly, its a reflection of the dealer not wanting to get stuck with a car they cant shift.

A dealer will probably put a good £1,500-£2,000 on top of what your car genuinely stands him at, but in this day and age, big autos of any nature don’t command premium price :(

I nearly got attacked by a guy with a Passat W8 once. the trade in we offered him was less than if he had brought a same age 2.0TDi Passat in. He lost a staggering amount of money on it as did a guy with a VR6 Beetle who was equally insulted. We rang round for days and couldn't get the car underwritten anywhere (similar story with the W8 Passat) and it got to the point were instead of cornering the market with these cars, we realised we were about to become 'the market'.

So why is it that people seem to be asking a lot still for the W8? The last time I searched Autotrader for a price for my Octy 4x4 they were selling from under 2 grand to nearly 8k at a dealer near me:rofl: If I remember correctly they only made these things for a short time so they can't be that much different - one of the 8k ones was older than mine and higher mileage. Even more bizarre they seem to have sold them:eek:

2.8 Petrol Auto, high tax to come, needs its own fuel station, new model ready, rubbish badge.

Who in their right mind would ever buy one of these?

Buy a 4 cyl diesel and run it into the ground using pattern spares and software and an Independent to fix it. Make sure that your service schedule addresses known weaknesses such as water ingress. Then (and only then) will you get good value out of a big Skoda.

rotodiesel.

You try and trade one in an see how much they can insult you:rofl: (they wouldn't get anywhere near the sticker price unless they found a novice/muppet.) This might be of interest.

Oh well, today saw me saying farewell to my much loved 2.8V6 Superb auto Elegance. Negotiated a trade-in price two and a half times the amount a Skoda dealer offered me against an Octy demonstrator :D

New car is a top-of-the-range Saab 9.3 Aero 2.0T demonstrator with 1100 miles on the clock and all the optional extras (£4Ks worth!). List price new £32.5 K, got them down to £20.5K before deducting the trade-in deal :) Well pleased:thumbup:

Keeping swmbo's Fabia tho so I can justify looking at Briskoda
