steering rack issue

Featured Replies

I have got a 2000 skoda fabia. run arnd 66K..

There was oil leak on the steering rack. I had to replace the rack...I did it at a specialist (centre not a dealer)

After fitting the new rack I have got the Streering light on. I had been to a skoda dealer thy did a check and found that there is no fault. They showed me the printout. And it was mentioned tht there is no error code.

They said there is no fault with the car. But once I start the car and drive for around 10 mins the light comes on again. and while parking its really hard to steer.

Can anyone suggest me plz?

Just got told that my rack may be buggered, could I ask how much it cost you to replace yours.

Thanks...

I'd plump for a steering angle sensor myself.

But then how come it didnt show up on the print out..

The same dealers changed the sensor for me around 6 months back...and it was the same symptoms then...but yday whn i went there they said there is no fault..and asked me to go back to the place i fitted my new steering rck...

R they trying to avoid me???? any one please help me..by giving suggestions??

There is mention (somewhere around these forums) that the alternator earth lead can cause the same problems.

The PAS sensor doesnt always log a fault because the system doesnt always know its faulty. All its looking for is a signal, if that signal isnt there it just assumes you arent turning the wheel.

Whenever we have a Fabia in where the steering light has come on, we first check for fault codes and if none are showing, we go into the measuring blocks and see if the sensor is reporting the steering wheel turn rate accurately.

Did they check the block readings?

I went to another dealer..thy identified its a faulty sensor...changed it...but still got the same problem...I am taking it back to the dealer this saturday...

Can anyone plz suggest

PS Pump faulty

or

Alternator lead (the earth can become corroded apparently)

I'm in the same boat as you fella, however I don't have loads of cash to throw at the problem.

Need to nail it down first before attempting a fix.

I had my rack replaced at a dealer about 2 years ago , I had no light on the dash but the steering was heavy whilst braking and turning at the same time. It was caused by a leak in the rack and the cost to replace it was (looks out bill) £677.... so it is a big hit if thats what you need!

Ouch...

Rack £677

Pump £700

Sensor £70 + Labour (£150-200)

Damn its an expensive area to repair.

Wouldn't be so bad if there was a conclusive way to identify which item is at fault.

hi boiling point...thnx fr ur replies...

initially i hd oil leak on steering rack.....

but do u feel its the pump?

Well if you've changed the sensor and the rack then there's only the pump and or alternator left. I've read that the earth lead from the alternator can become damaged and can cause the power steering to behave oddly. You'd need someone in the know to test it. The pump ... again, I've read that the electronics built into it can become damaged due to water ingress. And apparently you have to replace the whole pump to rectify that problem. I've found places that will actually collect your pump and recondition it and then return it to you, for about £150. But I doubt they'd recondition the electronics too. 2nd hand ones on ebay and the like may very well have the same problem with their electronics. It's a bit of a minefield from what I can tell.
