Crunchy Window

Featured Replies

No, its not edible- my 2001 Fabia window made a horrible crunch earlier and now it wont go back up, only down (even via pulling it).

Basically, what happened was that the window was down, I went to put it up and it went crunch - very loudly. Now its making a cruncy kind of noise when its moving.

Any ideas what it could be, how much it could be, and how difficult it will be for me to fix?

Thanks all!

Sounds like the window regulator. £70-100 quid to fix including parts I would hazard a guess. Think the crunching is it scraping on the glass!

Is this the fella : United Auto Parts Distribution SKODA

Might get the AA man round to take it apart and find the fault, and Ill watch so I can (hopefully) put it back together.

Also, whats the best way of "jamming" it up so the undersirables in my area dont take a chance with it?

Thanks

Has the window ever been broken / replaced? You'll be able to tell by whether it has the skoda logo and the same serail numbers as on the other side. If Fabia / Polo windows break, a load of broken glass falls into the door cavity where it can't be removed from. Perhaps that could account for the noise?

The noise is due to the window regulator cables broken. They fray over time then snap.

There are connected to your window guides inside the door.

Its nothing "scraping" up the glass. Its the cables winding round the motor.

The window WILL go up.

Just keep pressing the up button and get someone to pull it up. It will be tight, but it will go up.

Best thing is to get a new window regulator but you can also but the repair kits (cables and runners) but these can sometimes be a pain to fit.

Hope this helps for the time being untill its sorted.

Yes, the cable is frayed & causing the problems. The AA bloke reckoned that its the regulator that has gone, although he couldnt get at the whole thing as the metal runner things were rivetted to the large metal plate that is on the inside of the door. Do these rivets need to be removed or is it a different part that I will need to replace?

The window is held up with tape at the moment, and parked centimeters away from my sisters car so should make it hard for people to have a try with.

I might get the part and try it myself if it isnt too hard of a job - Ill have a proper look tomorrow. It should be fine in the mean time though because I work at a police HQ so I reckon its probably the safest of carparks:D:rofl:

In the mean time, does anyone know the part number of the regulator that I need (1.4 16v 2001 Fabia)?

Finally, can anyone recommend a cheap source of the part that I need :D ?

Thanks all for your help!

Update, all sorted.

Got the part from the main dealer for £60 (without motor) today, cheapest prices I was finding was in the £50 range so thought I'd be loyal to the dealer.

Was going to originally get someone to fit it but after seeing the regulator part, I thought I'd have a try (dealer quoted £170parts & labour).

Took me about 2 hours and all sorted, so thank you everyone once again!
