Graphics card Kaput!

Featured Replies

I have been reliably informed my graphics card is Kaput.

The screen has black lines all over it, and games etc are unviewable.

How much is a decent replacement, and are they plug and go for a computer numpty like me?

Or is anyone local to me able to come and fix it, please...?

I would rather pay more for a good one than buy a cheapie.

( Computer is mostly used for playing games and fannying around than for anything serious and worthy..:o)

TIA.

How old is the computer, it may give is an idea as to wether you need an AGP or PCI express graphics card.

It's just over 2 years old, and was the dogs danglies when I got it.

It has a tv card and everything! ( not that I ever use it, I would have been better off buying a decent games console tbh :o)

That age is borderline for either, what model is currently fitted.

Sorry Manny, I haven't a clue.

How do I find out?

Take the case off and have a look.

It's a couple of screws to undo the side panel , then a single screw will hold the graphics card in place.

Fish it out and take a picture for us.

Thanks for that.

I'm off to work shortly, I'll do it tonight.

Scan Computers UK: Computer Hardware - All (they seem to be updating their website) have some good deals on their 'today only' offers.

If your budget will stretch to it, nvidia 8800gtx are great cards but are over £200. My friend recently got an 8800gs for around £80 from scan and he says its pretty good. All depends on your budget!

Work are paying for it, I've just been told to send them the bill...;)

The whole PC is total scrap. I needed to get a new one :D

If you take the old graphics card on they will almost certainly have a logo on it saying AGP or PCI eXpress.

If not if you look at the card if the slot has the hole at the back of the case then it is probably PCIe and if it is at the front of the case it will most likely be AGP.

HTH, and I agree with Alex, the whole PC is dead, you need a new one ;)

Bit lacking in power that one innit!! hehe

What's your budget for replacing it Mr G? (even if work are paying :))

It's 'under discussion' atm.....

We WILL agree at somewhere between £100 and £200 English pounds..;)

Well if you need a hand I might be able to sort something.

Another way of getting to the bottom of the graphics card type issue, is if you've got the manual for the motherboard that's fitted, we can find out what it was specced with from the model number, or the manual might even tell you :)
