98 1.6MPI Felicia Rough Idle

Featured Replies

Hi People,

This is my first post on here....

I have a 1998 1.6MPI Skoda Felicia, 81500 miles, which has had one problem after the next since buying it 6 months ago!

The latest thing is that it is idling really rough, and i can only start it now by giving it loads of gas at the same time, otherwise it just cuts out...

it is hunting too, between 400-800rpm, and when i turn the steering wheel (power steering), the car almost cuts out.

While driving it, it feels a little lumpy, and sometimes when I stop at a junction, it cuts out...

I have read previous posts and got a few idea's but wondered whether anyone else had similar issues, and how it was resolved?!

See here

I thought mine sounded rough after first buying it. Gave it dose of injector cleaner and its been purring since.

Wow, people reply quick on here! You really get 41.8mpg?

Yeah i'm averaging over 40mpg and can prob get 400 to a tank if i let it run dry.

Hi, I had a very similar idle when I got my car 300 miles ago and now it's fixed thanks to the people on this forum (and some grafting by me). Anyway the 1.6 often gets a rough idle from it's breather pipes being blocked or leaking.... (mine was blocked AND torn). Anyway, find the air intake pipe from the air filter and follow it towards the engine, and coming into it, tucked around the back is an inch diameter rubber pipe. Check this pipe for splits and damage, then squeeze this pipe, it shouldn't be soggy. If possible pull this pipe off and clean it out as it can get full of oil. After that, and this is the thing that transformed my car, was the removal and cleaning of the oil separator from the back of the engine block. The oil separator is the large black plastic unit the previous breather pipe goes down to. It is held in place with 3 allen key fixings. take it off, soak it in engine degreasant and generally clean it out.then fit it all back again.obviously also check that your throttle cable isn't just too slack (although this is unlikely to cause an erratic idle, just a low one)for more info on the oil sparator then look at this link:http://briskoda.net/forums/favorit-felicia-fun-forman/blue-smoke-valve-seals-rings/114707/

hi man how r u doing about the "idiling rough" check the the ingictors they micht be clogged also check the fuel filter it will be hard to change it as you have to drop the fuel tank as it is at the the top of it but it will really helps you with your problems and also check the spark plugs

Good call , but you dont have to remove the tank, Its a bit of a tw4t and you will need a pair of long nosed pliers and triple jointed elbows. Also have you checked the electrical connector on the throttle body as thes can become brittle and work their way off.

Thanks guys, I have the afternoon off work, now I have something to try!

If it's really hunting, it's running rich, which suggests the cold enrichment is stuck on or the injector(s) aren't fully closing. Check the throttle connector, that the quadrant returns to the throttle stop when the engine's off, and run some injector cleaner through the engine if those haven't worked.

Thanks for all the posts... for now the car is better :-)

I took off a nice shiny thing which the throttle cable was attached to (not v.technical!), and cleaned up, and reseated a rubber seal under that, then put it all together again, and its better - for now!

If it gets worse again, I will try some of the other suggestions....

great site, very helpful!

That sounds like I was on the right lines with the throttle cable tension and/or idle stop adjustment!
