Problems downloading Windows Live Messenger?

Featured Replies

Hi there

Does anyone out there know a fix for the problem I'm having? Basically , when i try to download WLM oto my new Dell Inspiron 1720 laptop (running Vista Home premium) it will never ever get past 99% downloaded , it just sticks there , which is a complete PITA! are there any fixes for this as Ive tried 3 or 4 times to get it and the same thing happens every time!

TIA for any responses

:)

Is that with IE?

Try another browser like Firefox or Opera and see if same happens.

Hi,

Never had any bother myself. Are you downloading via the Windows Live Installer. If so select only that program to download before downloading any others. e.g Windows Live Photo Gallery. Oh and watch for Windows Defender popping up from system tray area.

You dont seem to have much luck with computers.

Regards.

I have found the windows live installer to be a right PITA recently for installing the new version of Messenger. Keep trying and sooner or later it will work!

I had this same problem last week, as I was installed Vista onto a new PC. It's not browser related as you download an initial installer program, which then goes to download the required files.

I tried about half a dozen times before it worked and can offer no solution apart from keep trying :)

Yeah its a pain like , im using aol9vr (vr= vista ready which is a joke!) and it never seems to load up , so if I keep trying it should work yes? Oh , and Im using dial up , if that has a difference!

Well, two separate problems there already:

1.) AOL

2.) Dialup

HTH :P

Yeah but ive been with AOL since 1997 and its always been fine with me , Ive got their wireless broadband kit downstairs , just waiting for a network ID and password to come thru the post so I can install it , should I wait untill im on broadband before downloading it? Its annoying that it gets to 99% and stops!! :(

I would wait if i was you because every time you try to download it and it freezes then you will be charged because you are using dial up.

I must admit i have never liked AOL having only used it at my friends once but you dont seem to have had any problems with it. I understand AOL has its own browser? If so try using Internet Explorer (making sure your vista installation is up to date first)to download the installer and go from there!

Like previous posts are mentioning it could be a problem with the windows servers.

Regards.

Hi Thanks for the replies so far

As far as I am aware , AOL9 VR uses IE7 as its web browser , when Im on Facebook , I get facebook chat as a pop up on the bottom of that webpage , but not on the pcs at work which are on XP using IE6. As for being charged , im on a unlimited monthly plan with aol so I can use the net as much as I want without charge (thats my dial up) so It never costs extra to download anything. I may just wait untill I get the broadband sorted before I try again , just to see if that makes a difference.

Cheers

Oh , by the way , the installer program works fine , I can download that no problems....

If all else fails. Try this. Will do what you want OK.

Windows | Download | Pidgin

It`s the Linux \ Windows equivalent of most of the chat programs rolled into one.

PS... AOL stinks.

I am really not up with AOL to be honest. I just remeber using my friends and it used a totally different browser. It might be worth waiting if you desperately want windows live messenger or like previously mentioned there are other cross platform instant messaging programs available like pidgin. This allows you to communicate with friends on more than one platform.

Hope you get it to work whichever way you decide.

I use Trillian, mainly because it's a multiple protocol / client program all in one (msn, yahoo, icq, irc, aol).

Also, I'm fed up of stupid "nudges" and fancy writing. I'm not into "personalising" my style when typing messages in an IM client. Guess I'm just old fashioned :o
