How accurate is MPG display?

Featured Replies

Out working last night and my display was showing a constant 58 - 59 MPG all night around town at low speeds.I only put in £10 diesel and managed to get 112 miles (thats only 7.7 litres of fuel).I was quite impressed by this but not sure about recorded display.

In my experience the Octy 2 is over-optimistic on fuel consumption by about 1mpg on a tankful - that's over a year careful checking actual versus reporting. What have others found?

There is a thread on this somewhere, might even be in the superb section. Mine isn't far out, only 1 mpg or so. Probably as accurate as the fuel shut off on your fuel pump unless you fill it so it dribbles out...

But at least it does give you an indication of how good/poor you fuel consumption is :)

Dis[lay on mine was very optimistic. Trip computer average was 52-53mpg but brim to brim rarely topped 45MPG

Easily calculated as I rest the trip at every fill and it always took around 1 lt for every 10 miles.

4.5 lts to the gallon.

1lt per 10 miles = 1 gallon per 45 miles

An easy calculation for your fuel cost per mile too - just divide the litre cost by 10.

If a litre is £1.30 its 13p a mile...

I posted rubbish. Ignore me.

It's a bit better than that: 1 (UK) gallon is 4.73 litres, so 47.3 MPG.

Where did you get that figure from? I disagree!

1 UK Gallon = 4.546 litres (so I agree with slider - at least to one decimal place)

1 US Gallon = 3.785 litres

ive found mine to be fairly accurate, i reset the display 2 everytime i fill up so i can get mpg for that tank and miles and then when i fill up i work out miles against litres in the queue to pay for thefuel and normally im within a mile or 2 per gallon.

I have found mine is a little optimistic by about 1mpg, not bad considering the mk1 was 3-4 mpg out.

Mine is about 4% optimistic - the same margin of error as the speedo which is no great surprise

OT, but just to explain myself.

The US/Imperial fluid measures are totally messed up.

In both systems, 8 pints make one gallon, but in the US a pint is 16 fluid ounces, whereas in the UK it's 20. I had assumed that that was where the confusion stopped, but it isn't. A US floz is only 0.96 of an Imperial floz.

That's what I get for depending on US software I don't understand, rather than checking in a book.

Overall mine is about 2-3mpg optimistic.

What I have found is that it is more accurate the fewer journeys you do.

The fewer times the "current journey" resets the more closely the overall reflects brim-to-brim figures.

Over one period I was on hoilday doing journeys of 100+ miles - the computer was on 1-2mpg optimistic.

When I am just commuting 2x 10 miles per day the computer will be 3-4mpg optimistic.

Must be something to do with the way it adds the data which introduces a creeping error.

Mine is about 2 mpg optimistic.

Speedo is about 2mph optimistic compared to Tomtom.

I have replied several times on this subject but i have found out over the 27500 miles done that every litre put in goes into my log and whilst all these figures spoke about doing 40/70 mpg mine still end up with an average of 42 mpg and includes 6000 miles towing 1350 klg.

I've found similar, at least in that the Mk2 is more accurate; my Mk2 vRS, which I've had since May last year currently averages about 2.6% optimistic, which is about 1 mpg. My Mk1 vRS which I had from December '01 to last May '07 came out as 5.1% more optimistic.

Yes, I'm afraid that I'm one of these anally-retentive types who always (OK, nearly always) brim-fills his tank and meticulously records all the figures in a spreadsheet.

The usage can be modified in percentage via VCDS/VAGCOM.
