Diesel Fumes in the cabin??

Featured Replies

Good Morning all,

Just wondered if you could help me out.

I've got into the car last couple of mornings leaving the car over night and I can smell diesel when I get into the car, at first I thought it was my cleaning materials ie polish, wax etc but it's defo smells like diesel, the thing is the fumes seem to clear after a short drive to work and only sort of smells when the car has been left for a long period of time.

Any ideas??

Fuel leak?

I've had a look under the car but cannot see anthing, could this be leaking into the cabin? The car was serviced only 3 weeks ago.

shouldnt be leaking into the cabin as all the fuel lines run underneath the car. i cant offer any explanation though.

Have a look under the car and in the engine bay for any obvious patches of diesel. At least with DERV it doesn't evaporate at normal outdoor temperatures, so you should be able to spot any leaks easily enough. Other than that, I don't know...

Cheers guys much appreciated.

I'll have a look under the bonnett the night, not coming from underneath the car as my dad would be the first to let me know if there was oil on his drive!

When did you last refuel?

As has been stated, Diesel doesn't evaporate so if you've picked up any spilled diesel on the forecourt on your feet, Your may have transferred it to your mats.

Car was refuel last tuesday.

Would have been last tuesday I refilled the car, never gave that a thought about stepping in diesel on the forecourt.

Thinking about it now when Hannah picked me up from work there was no smell of diesel in the car yesterday so I reckon it might be that then Mike. To be on the safe side will have a wee look the night

Does the PD130 have injector leak off pipes?

These return fuel that wasn't injected back to the next one and then down to the fuel cooler and eventually back to the tank.

Common for these to go occasionally on older cars so if it has them get them checked.

Otherwise I'd be checking all your fuel lines, especially those by the fuel filter for leaks and also check your intercooler pipes as they can leak at the joins with the EGR/IC and I would think that would smell quite dervy, although it would be more burn derv than otherwise.

Also have a look under the car to make sure you have not damaged any of the fuel lines on debris.

Lift up the rear seats, then remove the circular cover. under that is the fuel tank sender, pump housing.

Theres a big locking ring around the top, make sure that is tight and not leaking.

I have had this before, especially when using the vent to brim the tank

Skudmissle - Thanks for this.

No worries, you can usually tell if its been leaking as the diesel will puddle on top of the tank

Took me agers to find this, Random wiffs of diesel but no leaks that I could see. Was driving me insane.

What side of the cushion is this on or is it under the middle of the cushion??

Lift up the bottom of the seat, I think its under the longer one.

Is the car a slightly slow and smokey starter? I find this sometimes happens on a slow start, because somehow the diesel fumes get drawn back into the cabin (irrespecive of make and model).

Not that I'm aware is a bit xmoky when I boot it but not on start up.

might sound daft but have you had a look under the bonnet for spills? i wonder if any fuel has been accidentally spilled from changing the filter at service causing the smell? this happened to me when i spilt a bit of oil and god it made a right stink!

well it's not under the seat, and not had a chance to get under the bonnett due to the weather at the moment, but never noticed the smell when driving tonight.
