Cleaning Inside A-Pillar

Featured Replies

Ladies and Gentlemen,

After only having my car less than 2 weeks I have had to have a new windscreen fitted due to a stone chip, leading to a crack.

Anyway, the man from Autoglass has managed to get some of the black windscreen sealant on the inside of the A pillar - the cloth covered one that covers part of the curtain air bag.

He tried to remove it, basically the guy tried to rub it off, and has stained the cloth.

So please can someone tell me of something they know that is good for cleaning this. It's a shame as the car is so new and has this black mark which is starting to annoy me.

Thanks in advance to all who reply.

thats annoying having black silicon or bitumenised sealant or a combination of both mixtures on the A pillar....what have you tried to remove it? have you tried vanish solution? according to the ads on telly it shifts just about anything.....failing that.....if it was in my car id price up the cost of a new A pillar and send the bill to auto glass.regards....andy

I have tried the Auto Glym interior shampoo, on a clean cloth and rubbed the affected area.

Don't want to play around with the pillar too much, as the curtain airbag is behind it, so dont want to take it off myself - which I will not do.

But have considered the sending of the bill to Autoglass, but since I have cleaned it, or tried to, then I was the last one to touch it, so any argument is already a little 'hindered'.

Try some isopropyl alcohol or rubbing alcohol. Available on ebay in 100 ml bottles.

Something stronger is acetone (not sure where you'd but it these days) but nail varnish remover used to be acetone.

Erm...

Phone Autoglass customer services and raise hell - if it was me I wouldn't do anything else regarding cleaning.

It's their problem, let them sort it!

(If you'd like an email/letter writing PM me, - I get them all day, I know how to complain ;) )

As for an alternative cleaning solution, I'm sure Baker will be along soon

Various things you can try but as Bluefox has stated I would speak with Autoglass to see what they can do?

If not then I use CG Stain Extractor and Megs Carpet Cleaner which work well for me? The other alternative is a wet / dry vac?

As stated I'd try Nail varnish remover. but being a bloke wouldn't know where to get it.

Might make a good chat up line:thumbup:

Thanks for all the replies guys, tried the customer complaints with AutoAR5E but no joy, so rather than bang my head against a brick wall any more I will try some of what has been suggested.

Mr Baker, this CG stuff you mention, is that it's proper name?

As for nail varnish remover, think my sister has some, among other various cosmetic elements!

Thanks again to all.

I had the same problem. Black sealant on the A pillar trim, and it looked terrible. I rang Autoglass to complain and no joy, until I threatened them with my Solicitor. A new trim was purchased (Not too expensive) and they paid up........... eventually.

That's grim. I don't understand how they can dodge responsibility, it's not like you would have had window sealant there before the windscreen was fitted...

Boo Autoglass! :thumbdwn:

Was it an insurance claim?

If so tell your insurance co you were not happy with the work their agent did as they have damaged your car and that you expect their agent to rectify it.

Autoglass will change their mind then ;)

Also I'd bet on a new trim being cheaper than a load of cleaners to try clean it.

Looked into getting a new trim and it is £21 so not too bad considering all the hassle to go through AuotAR5E.

if only we can see the stones coming towards us drivers then we could swerve out the way and let it another car.save all this grief with careless windscreen fitters and our pride and joy being ruined by their incompentance !! wonder if there is a scanning device out there ha ha ha

...careless windscreen fitters...

From where I'm sitting it only ever seems to be Autoglass.

Cheaper than all the chemicals and your time, I'd just do it then take photos of the old one and send it with a copy of the receipt to them asking for the money or you will be talking to your lawyer. I'd think they will pay up sharpish.

If it was an insurance job they will solve it for you.

As for just this lot.. no I've had far worse from others too.
