Featured Replies

Sounds pricey...

I got a top range dturbo 3door with 90k on a p reg for £900 and that was 18months ago,

Also sold my x reg HDI meridian (top spec) with 140k for £1200

But glad you like it

We realised it was a bit pricey, but SWMBO is one of those who sets her heart on buying something and will not be convinced that she is paying too much for it. As long as she's happy with it, though, I don't particularly care if she paid £200 odd too much for it ;)

I had no problem with the rest of the car, the standard passive four wheel wheel steering was just amazing too. The rear wheels tilt to enhance turn in :D

Although that can give you a nasty twitch if you're cornering hard the one way and steer sharply onto opposite lock. That said, the car will catch that faster than you can react.

We have a 405 on an M reg plate still in Bournemouth with the XUD eng and its on 550,000 miles now and still sweet and responsive.

That the estate in black and white (Christchurch) or the Yellow one that I still see going around from time to time?

Ahh the joys of a good chassis ;)

Thank you to everyone in this thread who gave sterling advice.

We bought an "s" reg Peugeot 306 LX TD yesterday with 140k on the clock for £1250. The interior of it is immaculate, and the exterior is immaculate too, bar a dent on the drivers side rear corner...

I had a brief drive in it and was v.impressed with the way it seemed to drive; very easy to get used to, etc.

I'll keep you updated with how it treats SWMBO over the next few months... and I'll also let you know if I ended up instructing her to buy a complete wreck when we get it back here on Monday, haha

Before you do anything with it go and do/get the following done:

- Change the coolant and thermostat.

- Oil change for good oil as above with new oil, fuel and air filters.

- Take an old paintbrush to the outside of the top mounted intercooler to clear the flys out of it.

- Check the cooling fans are coming on.

- Check the brake pipes over for signs of corrosion and if they are sound get a coat of the black rust killer/blocker on them.

Best of luck and I think you might find yourself taking it out for the odd blast now and then. :)

Do all 306s have the TMIC? I'm asking cos my Xantia had an FMIC, but Haynes seems to think they all had TMICs.

I think I'll be able to manage all of that myself :) Thanks!

All left the factory with an TMIC, well the 1.9's did. Not sure on this, but I have a feeling the 2.1 may have got an FMIC in some configurations.

While I remember ,if it has the bosch fuel pump (You will see a priming bulb) you find the thermostat is under the fuel filter housing, so get a new gasket for it and do the stat and the fuel filter at the same time. :)

I meant the XUD1.9s. I know the Xantia 2.1 had an FMIC, and suspect all HDis do irrespective of power and capacity.

Nope HDI90 has no intercooler at all in the 306 and IIRC in all installations.

The 110 gains the I/C.

i had a 306 1.4 petrol and it was a complete bag of ****e, looked nice, but from the day i bought it (collected it late because of mot failure) things constantly went wrong, battery randomly draining, window motors, main wiring harness, headlight earth, rocker gasket, dodgy aircon. errrm thats all i can think of. get something else mate, anything but french!!!!

FWIW the OP bought a 1.9 XUDt variant.

Can't say that I ever had the problems you mention, but then everyone likes to have a go at french cars. You get duff VAG group and other cars too.

The Yellow one in Bournemouth

Just had the 306 serviced and cambelt/water pump changed!

Has still only got 53,000 on the clock (98 R reg) and was well over-due a service so its made a hell of a differnce!

Before it seemed to just loose all power as soon as it revved up near the top and would only manage 40mph in 2nd gear... now it will do going on 50 in 2nd!

Got the service light re-set too so it no longer flashes at us but just tells us how far before next service due! lol

Great cars and very reliable... just make sure you find a tidy example and it'll be fine!

This one was bought about 3 years ago with 30,000 on it!

The Yellow one in Bournemouth

I did wonder as I've seen that around for years and figured it must be on stellar miles. IIRC I saw him up portfield one too when they used to have the Citroen service place there. Good to know it's still going stong.

I take it you work for the yellow company then?

Sounds like the job's a good 'un then; that is about the governer in second (and it gets there d@mn quick if you've overtaking a tractor).
