Broken valve

Featured Replies

Unfortunately my 02 VRS broke down on Friday, as I work away from home it was left with the dealer to fault find, apparently it has one broken valve, has anyone had this happen before? Will get car back Saturday and remove head to investigate damage, will report back.:(

Nope, I think you were unlucky, though drastic over-revving MAY cause the issue.

Let us know how it goes

Greg.

never heard of a broken valve. Does this automatically mean the valve broke because of pressure?

Is your car modded at all?

I wouldnt be suprised if its an inlet valve, are known to be problematic on 20v engines.

Car is standard, has not been over rev'ed, for the past month or so taking it easy when travelling away for work, actually managed an indicated 45.3 mph on a 220m trip on super!! Mostly m-way/dual roads though.

When car broke down I was doing approx 50mph on a winding A road following other traffic, it simply miss-fired then cut out, not noisy at all, so i guess it's an inlet gone.

Why would it cut out if 3 cylinders are just fine? Also how exactly has the valve failed, a valve broken off in the cylinder generally makes a hell of a noise when it mashes your head, piston and bends the rod.

All will be revealed tomorrow I hope, I only have the dealer say-so on this, I work away from home and tomorrow will be the first opportunity to get the car back home and inspect it ourselves. The breakdown was very undramatic, but that is the way it goes

Head not off just yet, just need to get 'ribe' drive socket to remove head bolts. Problem is in No 2 cylinder.

Oh dear something doesn't look right there does it.:(

You should be able to get a new spark plug for a couple of quid :D:D !!!!!!

Seriously though..hope it's nothing too serious, but it don't look good !!

Will update as we go, working away next week, hopefully get a little further tomorrow, the lure of an ice cold 'Magners' whilst sitting in the sun seemed the better option.

Couldn't focus on the piston, even the camera was scared.:D By the way that valve is embedded quite deep there, a piece of valve stem was sitting on the gate into the turbo, fragments also found in No 3 chamber. Hopefully a promised engine is still available, but I suspect by rumours heard, that he has sold it. What to do, the value of the car if OK is probably the cost of a good engine plus bits to fit, new unit from Skoda is £3500.

Tidying up

Shame what has happened mate. Be VERY careful if you are to use the existing turbo on the replacement engine as it may well have a damaged exhaust wheel etc.

Oh dear, taken a bit of a battering hasn't it. This is the 2nd one in a week I heard of, getting a bit worried about the 1.8T now... I know someone that had the same thing, quote was more like 5.5k because it wasn't just the engine, while it's out you would be silly not to put a clutch in and so forth. But they do come with a good 2 year no hassle warranty. But then you would be spending more than the car is worth, you could buy a whole other car for less....

Whatever you do good luck and I'm really sorry it happened. I certainly don't think it was your fault, when these things let go there isn't much you can do about it and it's generally a design, manufacturing or metalurgy issue - not something that will go away with a service.

Lets hope they make stronger valves for the newer engines.

Greg.

If the crank and No 2 conrod are ok, you should be able to get away with a new valve, new piston and rebalance I think. No obvious sign of bore or head damage there.

A piece of the valve stem was sitting on the turbo inlet, so I guess the smaller unaccounted for bits have already been through it.

The combustion chamber is quite badly damaged, most valve seats damaged, a piece of valve/stem is actually stuck under one of the inlets.

 oh god very messy looking.

Hope you can sort it out without too much ££££

Get yourself a salvage engine, best and cheapest option. Make sure all the intercooler pipes and intercooler itself are clear of debris.

Did you look at the head?:eek:

Whoa that's a serous failure

I wonder what the cause was?

I'm assuming that it is valve failure, no visual evidence to proove otherwise. May be requiring doner engine, my promise of one seems to have gone awol.:(

Now having to rely on Pug' 205 as service vehicle for the Silverstone Classic weekend.

Does look like valve failure.
