Not Skoda but there's probably still someone on here who could help me!

Our 106 failed the MOT this morning :thumbdwn: on an imbalance in the front brakes. Rather than a 50/50 split in the braking force we've got more like 33/66 so she's pulling to the right under braking.

The tester (an independent not attached to a garage) has suggested the possiblity that the wife is too light on the brakes (which isn't a bad thing) but its meant that the slider on the caliper isn't being worked as much as it should and its possiblt resulted in the problem and he suggested (all off the record) that it probably needed a strip down and grease up.

My question is, do you think this is whats causing the imbalance in the braking and is there a way I could do this myself without having to strip the brakes down?

The MOT tester is almost certainly right. You should strip both front brakes and check that the sliders are free and lubricated with the correct grease. The slider boots should also be intact. The pads need to have the end lugs lightly lubricated with copper based anti-seize compound where they slot into the carrier and where they contact the retaining wedge. This is important, otherwise the pads don't move properly in the carrier as the linings wear.

Bleed the brakes and preferably renew the fluid when you have finished - be careful the bleed screw doesn't shear off if it has been neglected.

If you take any short cuts at all on these Bendix calipers, they won't work properly.

I agree take the pads and callipers out, clean off any rust etc with a wire brush from the slider areas and give them a lube with a small amount of copper grease etc.

Also check the pads and discs as I have seen a couple of cars with one worn more than the other and on closer inspection found the pads were different brands. Eg a previous owner had just changed one side for some reason :eek:

Thanks for the info. Much appreciated. The pads are the same both sides and the MOT guy said that the wear is very even between both sides. I'll get cracking on it tonight!

I had a very similar problem with my old 106, the sliders on one side had seized. Required them to be stripped, re-greased and new pads due to uneven wear, cost me £100 at a garage as i didn't have time or tools to do it myself.
