Whilst it is technically possible to share files and this is not a crime, each individual has a moral and legal duty not to break any copyright or ownership laws.

To create a piece of music you need someone who has taken the time to learn how to play an instrument and/or sing and something to record them with. In the early days of recording this meant expensive equipment, a specialist studio and engineering staff. Now anyone with a computer can write, record and publish a composition. However, you still have ownership rights for at least 3 components of the track. The original composition, the single performance of that composition and the mechanical rights (physical storage of that performance). You then have the rights to replay and reproduce that performance (PRS Licensing).

There are many areas where the profit model of an industry and the progress of technology have become confused. If Sky did not pay the football clubs so much would they pay their players as much and would we have to pay so much to watch sport?

There are laws in place to stop theft, if I walk out of a shop without paying for something I know it is illegal. Moving things around the internet is more of a grey area but if you are unsure I assume most people would find out first if they are about to do something wrong. You usually know if you are watching/listening to something the original producer has not authorised you to view/hear.

Since the introduction of the "PlayList" on radio stations it has been almost impossible to listen to anything outside of the mainstream.

I used to listen to Radio Io and bought (when I could), lots of albums; and only torrented what I couldnt find in the UK; now even the internet radio stations have had to use playlists because of the royality issues and licensing in the USA a couple of years ago.

SO now I tend to download whole discographies after hearing a song I like, then see if there are enough good songs to justify buying either the albums or a "Best Of" compilation

Music is only a fraction of what I D/L anyway, mostly it is US TV shows that either dont get shown here, only get shown on Sky, or only appear a year after they were on US TV.

Oh!!

and porn :D

Anyone here use Spotify?

You can play music (by streaming) and make playlists on your computer, without downloading them. I've not yet, but I've heard it the new legal way to get music.

You get a certain amount of hours allowance (21 hours I think) Ive used it a couple of times and IMO I think its pretty good  Not all new tracks are on there but if you pay for it (£10 pm) then you get new tracks as soon as they come out and can even play songs though your phone (Iphone, android etc)

EDIT: Trigger fish is right, they have changed it

Yeah they've changed Spotify and the restrictions are a bit now unless you pay for it. I just make playlists on Youtube now for my music although it's a pain when some get taken down for breach of copyright
