03 TDi Elegance Engine Noise

Featured Replies

I was travelling along my usual stretch of bypass to work and then came to a stop at a roundabout. Upon setting off, I heard a loud grind/moan from the engine/transmission as I engaged clutch and pulled away.

I feathered it to work and noise was only apparent when clutch was engaged and accelerating. Noise was same in each gear and gears engaged normally.

When clutch was engaged the engine revved fine with no noises.

Upon leaving work some hours later and by the time I arrived home the engine was now noisy and sounded rough whether or not clutch was engaged.

Noise seems to be coming from the nearside whilst sat in the car. I also noticed that the radiater fans are now running constantly? Car has 113k, oil is fine and water is on the level in the reservoir. Engine still revs freely and power is the same.

Any ideas before I go to the garage? Kind regards in advance, Andy

I'd guess clutch/flywheel breakup, gearbox problem, in that order - not sure about the fan, could be a red herring. If the noise was from the driver side I would have plumped for the aircon pump/clutch.
