Chipped screen

Featured Replies

Was cleaning my car the other day and nearly cut my hand on the top of the windscreen. Looking at it closely along the top where the glass meets the roof there seem to be chips missing. There are no associated scratches as if caused by stone etc. heard of at all? If I didn't know better I would actually think that the screen was placed end up on the ground and the glass chipped when it was put down before being fitted:confused:.

Thats possible but stones do fly up into strange places when driving.

On another car I had one between the edge of the glass and the A pillar, in a very difficult position to remove, so yes, it can be stone chips. Or even frost-thaw cycles or even washing the windscreen while it is still very hot from summer sun, for example.

Check the bottom of the screen for a white stripe in the black of the screen. It could be de-laminating. The two problems are unconnected, but the de-lamination is a known problem and will get you a warranty replacement, solving the other problem :D

I repair screens for a living and can confirm that the edge of screens do get broken both by flying stones and by careless handling at the factory as I have repaired both previously! You generally can't tell what has caused it because the bit of glass the stone hit is the bit missing but look closely to see if any lines are showing in the black around the broken glass as they will be cracks and its highly likely they will spread if we ever get a summer this year! You've just been unlucky so either find somebody who can repair it, claim on your windscreen cover or just live with it till it goes.
