Speedo 15% Error

Featured Replies

Hello all,

This is my first post here, what a great community that you have guys !

My Octavia Mk1 speedo always reads 15% less than the speed that I'm actually doing. Any idea about the cause/possible solution ? Thanks in Advance.

This can be adjusted with Vag com iirc

Had this problem with mine - except mine was over - the garage said there were adjustments on the speedo on the back of the dash (might have meant VAG Com).

I seem to remember there was a bulletin for this quite some time ago. I can't seem to find the info but it might be worth call to Skoda UK as it required reprogramming of the dash insert.

Other than that I think you can change the wheel sensor pulse rate in the dash insert with VAG-COM or VAS.

Well the VAG COM idea seems as a very clean solution (don't like to mess with the car electricals). I'm definitely gonna buy the software + cable. Thanks guys :)

Perhaps I didn't make it clear, if the dash panel insert should have been flashed then the VAG-COM solution is not a substitute.

VAG-COM will only correct it if it's been in-advertantly changed.

Oh sorry VRSTu I replied before seeing your reply. Got it buddy, Thanks :)

No problem

Ideally if you can read off your Pulse rate from the dash insert and compare with another MK1 owner that would help.

If it helps, I tested my speedo with my GPS and from 50-140 MPH it was consistently 6 mph high.

Thx Somouk,, it helps to know that I'm not the only one having a problem with his speedo.

These are the true (GPS) and indicated (speedometer) speeds for my Octavia I and Fabia vRS:

True - Octavia - Fabia

30------32-------32

40------43-------43

50------53-------54

60------64-------64

70------74-------75

Thanks DGW :)

Check with a dealer to see if there are any outstanding campaigns. There was one around 2000/2001 (X reg) for under reading speedometers on the Octavia.

My figures are much the same as Denis, but I see that as no bad thing..... if I travel at the indicated speed and take that as actual, then I should not get caught out by the odd minor fluxuation in speed (say for an overtake on the motorway, etc), however for it sherbo I can see the problem :-)

Do you have original rims and tyre sizes?

I know a lot of people have gone for a slightly different tyre size as the Octy one is a tad unusual and hence pricey.

Changing the rolling radius (or whatever the technical term is) of the wheel will affect the accuracy of the speedo.

duncanj: Yes I already checked that, and the overall radius is stock.

mbames: Quite true,, It's very annoying because here in Egypt the highway speed limit is 100 km/h,, and to avoid being caught I need to be careful not to cross 85 on the speedo, which is too small of a tick-mark to watch for :)

OLD THREAD REVIVAL!

I wish I had found this over a year ago lol That would relate to my 2001 under reading then! Do you know if this is something which a dealer would address still and if a charge would apply on such an old issue?
