Diesel v's Petrol Vrs

Featured Replies

Hi my names Brendan , new to the site, from Co. Cork Ireland.

Planning on buying an Octavia VRS (05 UP)

I cant decide on petrol or diesel, i drove a petrol about a month ago and plan to go look at a diesel this weekend.

Ive just got a job as a field engineer so that will involve a good bit of travelling plus ill be driving home and back every weekend which is a 320 mile round trip.

Any one got any ideas or preferances.

I know the petrol is supposed to average 35.8 mpg but dont know about the diesel.

Im used to driving a petrol and am only considering a diesel because of the milage ill be doing.

I think you've muddled up petrol and diesel there...

Cheers Babs, changed it there :)

Excellent!

Right - work out how many miles you do, and look at the price difference between the cost of the car and the cost of fuel (since derv is about £17,000 a litre now).

I've driven both, and would take the petrol! :)

Well these are the two im looking at, the petrol is alot higher spec, so im leaning towards that. Id say milage will be up over 17,000 a year.

Ill wait till i drive the diesel anyway to make my mind up but just want opinions

@ Babs Why do you prefer the petrol?

I would go to the UK to buy one but its hard to sell second hand cars at the moment and i cant afford to buy a new car before selling my own, so im planning on trading in my own.

Looking at the 2 I'd go for the diesel, it's cheaper to buy, is newer and has less miles on it.

I went from an Octy VRS MkI to a diesel Passat and I can honestly say I don't miss the petrol.

With you doing 17,000 a year it makes sense to go diesel as I think for it to be financially benificial you need to do 12,000 and above.

Just my opinions and I haven't driven either Octy MkII VRSs.

I prefer the way the power was delivered, and the petrol had a nicer noise, was less nose-heavy and rev'd better.

I've had both diesel and petrol cars, and would go with petrol even if it meant spending a bit more.

I did a quick calculation the other day and at current prices you only need to cover 26k to pay back the difference in price between a new vrs petrol compared to diesel. So within a year and a half you will get your money back (and I did not factor in the fact that diesels normally have a higher resale value than petrol)

I personally have the diesel vrs even though I only do 10k a year. I bought it becasue I prefer the way it drives. I used to have a mk 1 vrs and liked the rough and ready engine with a good surge of power. I found the petrol too refined for me. It went very quickly but just did not make me smile. While the diesel gives u a massive kick in the butt when the turbo comes in. It is ultimately not as fast (although when in gear and overtaking I do not think there is much difference between them) but it makes me smile a lot more. Also I get 45-47mpg on my run to work (10 miles with a mix of A,B and motorway) and on a long run I get up to 55mpg.

The best advice would be to drive both and see which you prefer and which one suits your driving style. Whichever you decide I am sure you will not be disappointed.

Pay's your money and takes your choice..... to be honest I don't find the petrol VRS as expensive to run as I thought (I came from a 1.9 TDI MkV Golf). It delivers pretty good mpg and TDI style low down grunt, the only thing to remember is to get the most out of the engine requires 'Super Unleaded' so bear that in mind if your doing any cost of derv vs unleaded price tyep of calculations

Had same dilemma, doing work as well as personal miles. wanted ecomony but the play factor of my mk1 vrs. Decided on the derv vrs and am pleased especially with the duration between fill ups. Didn't take very long for a bluefin but thats just because got left behind by mates CC'd mk1 vrs.

In reality you will be only averaging 30-31mpg in the petrol and 40 ish in the diesel. I worked out with current fuel prices if you do 600 miles a week it will cost you circa 1400 euro more a year to run. If you do 300 miles a week 700 euro and so on...

Brendan bear in mind it was Feb/March 2006 when the Petrol vRS came to Eire, IIRC the Diesel very late 2006.

There has been comments about the early original PD Diesels with DPF issues. Diesel is now definitely the way to go, if you can stretch it and don't have a trade in can get a Diesel for under 29k due to new VRT rules, also with road tax of 290 euro. Also the new CR is much quieter.

just had my car serviced and was given the VRs diesel to drive for the day. Put it through it's paces and have to say I believe i made the right decision (for me) in going with the petrol. The major differences i noted was the noise and the turbo lag. In terms of mpg i've slowed down substantually and find the engine economy to be performing above my expectations.

Good luck with what you choose anyway.

Thanks for all the replies, sorry had no internet at work for the last few days as i was in shannon working. Ill probably go to look at the Diesel VRS today.

I was thinking about it the other day too and even though the petrol VRS has all the extras i dont know how often id use them. It sounds like a mixed set of opinions, so id say it will really just depend on my own preferance.

The max i have to spend is 25k but i will be trading in my own car (VW Bora) as im finding it hard to sell privatley. So hopefully ill be paying 20k euro.

@ Gaff whats the problem with the DPF, do they have to be replaced often or something

There should be no problem with the dpf unless the car is constantly driven in stop start traffic.

The dpf needs to be regenerated, which it does itself when its at a certain temperature. Obviously driving round at 20mph in traffic the car is not going to reach that temperature. I have had my derv vRS for 5 months and as a rule only used at weekends (at the moment, soon to change) but when its used its on good flowing traffic at 50+ mph and at 2000rpm so the DPF can regenerate.

As you state your going to be a field engineer (so am I, in telecoms) your DPF will be fine.

More and more diesel cars are having dpf's fitted now for EURO emmission regulations so there will me no getting away from it in diesels soon.

If for some reason the dpf hasnt been regenerating a light comes on the dash. This light means "give me some beans for 20 minutes or so to clean me up and have some fun at the same time". Light will then go off and all will be well.

Oh, and looking at the 2 specs,

The Diesel has Cruise, Maxi dot, Climate control, auto lights, rain sensor, jumbo box.

The petrol doesnt mention any of these but has Xenons and rear parking sensors.

The spec on the web site may be inconsistant, but Id say the diesel has the better spec to be honest.

Ok, Xenons are good, probably the best option there is, BUT the normal projector lights on the Octy are still fantastinc anyway, especially with upgraded halogens in. Rear park sensors can be added later, albeit not showing on the stream audio display.

Drive both, and compare the exact specs to be sure (to be sure, lol)

I think Tomo has covered this above, it has been cover on here a few times so just make yourself aware of it

I wouldn't be 100% sure but IIRC the Petrol & Diesel have the same list of equipment in Ireland. Best check with your dealer. Xenons are great but are very expensive, there are HID kits available and I can't notice any difference (czechmate (in Dublin) has ones fitted). Also would highly recommend the Rear Sensors, makes parking so much less hassle.

Well went and drove the diesel today and absolutley loved it, the car was perfect only a small scratch on the bottom of the front bumper. I loved the power from it espically when the turbo kicked in and acceleration in 6th gear was very good too for overtaking. :D

So to cut to the end i put a deposit on it and should be collecting it either this saturday or next saturday depending on when i sort out the money. The mpg suited my driving needs better and the power is more than enough.

Now all i have to do is wait fo 1-2 weeks.

Thanks for all the replies, your help was great.

And i asked the salesman about the DPF and he said the exact same thing so thanks tomo1971 and Gaff

I am sure you will enjoy your new purchase. Welcome to the diesel club!!!

you should check out DMG motors i donegal town, he has a silver 07 and blue 08 which would come in under the new tax rules.
