smoked head/tail lights?

ok so ive stripped down and painted my headlights and indicators today, man what a complete a r s e of a job, was a complete nightmare trying to separate the light!

and ive managed to snap a piece off, oops, well its being glued back on as we speak! not sure im convinced on exactly how good it will look because there are some imperfections in my painting, hoping that once its behind the lens that it shouldnt be so obvious!

pics will follow once they are back on the car

Hope it all turns out ok

Im thinking of doing this to mine also coz it looks really effective !

How did you seperate ur lights did you use a heatgun, and how are you fitting them back together ?

What paint did you use ? Did you spray paint or brush ?

Sorry for the questions but im really interested in doing this

nah thats no problem mate, used a heat gun and a flat bladed screwdriver, but it literally took forever! i originally was goin to use black magic spray paint so it matched my car but paint it on with a brush, didnt work so i opted for black hammerite and brused it on the main areas of the light, then rubbed down and sprayed it on the headlight surround (it becomes more obvious once you have stripped it down which part is the surround, its kind of the very forward part which is just behind the front plastic).

fitting my lights back together i have used some aircraft weatherseal called PRC, i dont know if its available to buy though because i got it from work. i will be fitting it back together about lunchtime so if i have enough time i will take some pictures and put them up.

Think i will be giving this ago myself once i get my car back :) Looks very mean.

Will be good to see some pictures once you got it all back together :)

Kind Regards

Garry

Sounds like you got a lil DIY project on the go there. Sounds coolio get some pics up as soon as it done.

haha i hope this doesnt catch on too much, the only car ive seen so far with tinted headlights was dsmithmobiles, dont want every man and his dog having them lol

What I'm wondering is whether or not it will reduce useless scatter without weakening the beam spread.

I put some shades on my dog at the weekend. Was funny :)

 thats fine as long as you didnt heat gun out his eyes and spray them!

Ha Ha, no, the little bugger did chew my shades up tho bess her :)

DIRRRRRTY BEGGARS where do they make them and how much do they cost? although it only takes 30secs to heat the surround the up before they separate,

now if it was headlights then i would be remoteley interested!

bargain

26 euros? i think id rather pimp my sister!

I'll pass on the indicators; IMO they'd spoil the shape of the front cluster.

They dont look too bad

Cant wait to see these pics mark sargeant!!!!

a quick pic i snapped earlier as promised, the finish isnt 100% perfect and i could have taken my time a little longer, but for £5 in paint i think its a pretty good mod

feel free to praise me or rip the p i s s

Look good to me

Yeah i like that. :)

Whats it like at night? You notice much difference? Hope you used heat resistant paint ;)

Kind Regards

Garry

I'd not have done that horizontal flat surface below the headlight bulb; it's part of the reflector, and will affect (not positively) your ability to read things like roadsigns at night.

i read it all..can some please tell me a way aon how to convert these normal lights to smoked ones.. cheers

I believe my rear lights were done using normal car body paint, but applied in many many very thin layers until James (JBS) got the desired result. As a result they polish up nicely with just a quick buff and they have not fadded at all like some other tint spray can. Not sure how easy this would be to do as a home job tho.

I have seen people putting light black (thats a contadiction in terms) tights over the rear lights. Looks okay i think until it rains :)

I hope this helps.

Kind Regards

Garry

That's how I'd do rears too; lots of (preferably sprayed) coats of very thinned paint.

Looks good mate!!!!

 • 9 months later...

Lifting this one since it seems to be a very very nice mod and im planning on doing this to my vRS but i have headlights with xenon, all earlier mods have been done to cars without xenon.

How do you guys think i should do the painting, should i paint the whole insert or try something like the other ones?

My car i s red btw :)
