Engine Oil Consumption

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I am buying the second hand skoda rs( 2006, 100K KM ,2.0T, 200ps petrol) station wagon next week.

Sellers says becuase of turbo engine it consumes lot of engine oil. I need

to top up every 3000KM to 5000KM. Is it normal or some thing wrong with the piston rings?

All five windows make crackling noise rubber seals seems to need replacement. How much it cost to change the rubber seals of all the four windows?

seller drives it mainly on highways.

Is there any other suggestion ?

Kindly help as I am going to take the delivery of the car next week.

Hi

Can only speak of diesels.

We run two diesel Octy 2 1.9 tdi, one is a 1.9 tdi pd 4x4 2007 estate, now on 28,000 km the other is a 2006 Octy 1 1.9 tdi estate on 65,000km. Both have regular services at every 15,000 km, in compliance with our dealers request. Both are used 80% on motorways rest in city/ rural. Neither has to top up oil between services, now that they are over the initial 5000km. Hope this helps.

Hi

I have a 1.9TDi and have not yet needed to top up in over 5000 miles.Service is due in another 5000 miles.(25K)

Really depends on how you drive it.

2.0tdi uses 1 litre every 5k so far, but seems to be getting less the more miles I do. I drive it up to the red line, maybe has something to do with it.

My 2.0t petrol has done 57000miles and burns a litre every 3000miles (approx 90000km and 5000km).

VAG (all brands) say that's "normal". My TDi is on 80_000 miles give or take, and doesn't need topping up between fixed service intervals.

I had a 2.0 litre Golf estate (petrol) before trading it for my diesel 1.9 Octy. The Golf used to drink oil at the rate of about 1 litre per 2000 miles. But, previous Golfs I owned hardly used any oil between services, so it is very much car specific and a question of luck I think.

It depends on your driving. I generally have to put in a litre every 8-10k in my vRS diesel which isnt a problem.

Hi All,

Could you also tell me. when timing belt need replacement?. My seller says it has third time serviced at 80,000KM and need timing belt replacement at 120,000Km when the fourth service will be due.Is it true? And how much it cost?

I did about 70,000 miles in my 2001 Mk1 petrol vRS over a period of about 5.5 years. Had it serviced seven times, every 10,000 miles. Probably had to put in 0.5 - 0.75 of a litre about 6,000 miles after each service. Used about 3.75 litres of oil in the last three and a half years that I had it.

There again, about two-thirds of my mileage was done on short journeys of 10-20 miles, most of it on roads with a 50 mph limit (and with not much scope for going much faster, either ;))

I imagine I'd have used more oil if I was blatting up and down autobahns at 90-100 mph every day!

That doesn't match any of the recently quoted UK belt replacement intervals.

It is however the mileage at which a replacement water pump is strongly indicated, since they have a habit of stripping the plastic impellor drive splines or the impellor breaking up between 130_000 and 160_000km, particularly on the RS models.

As for costs, no idea. It would help if we knew where in the world you are!!

The OP is quoting km not miles.

The belt should be done every 4 years or 60k miles IIRC although the distance interval may vary from engine to engine.

I got that, but just which UK schedule quotes belt replacement on the 1.8T at 75_000 miles (give or take 5_000)?

I done 15000 miles up to the first variable service and did not require any top up, however the next 13000 miles i have put 1.5 ltr in, thats on a 55 plate 140 dsg Elegance.

IIRC the 2.0 TFSI cambelt interval is 120,000 miles. Diesel is 80,000 miles.

My 56 plate 2.0T vRS has used about half a pint in 6000 miles.

The shocking reality is they are allowed to use 1 litre every 600 miles.

hi folks,

yesterday was at the dealer for 90.000 km service, nothing special was done, just oil and all filter change, some diagnostics and small guarantee works. that cost me 122 LVL or 174 EUR. i was surprised that timing belt replacement must be done at 120.000 km. also was curious, how much that would cost - they quoted approx. 300 LVL or 428 EUR.

my petrol vrs consumes 1 liter of oil between the service intervals 15.000 km and the dealer said it's normal.

p.s. can you please explain, what's understood in the UK by, for instance "56 plate"? Can you tell out of that the car registration date with the traffic control authorities?

thanx

Yes. Between September 2006 and February 2007. Edit: corrected the end date

In the general case, if someone says a UK car is 01 plate, that means March 1st to August 31st 2001, 51 plate would be September 1st 2001 to February 28th 2002, up to the current 08 plate being March through August this year.

Yes. Between September and December 2006.

56 plate is between 1st Sept 2006 and 31st March 2007 isn't it?

btw my Octy is the ultimate 06 plate! first registered on 6/6/6 - the number of the beast

To answer the original question - my 2006 1.9TDi has used half a litre since the last service 13000 miles ago. Would probably have lasted without a top-up to the next sevice but I topped up anyway!

56 plate is between 1st Sept 2006 and 31st March 2007 isn't it?

:iagree:, as per #20 I think it is.

I am starting to think the 1.9 Octy is similar to my old 1.9 Pug 406. If you topped it up to full it rapidly (500 miles) fell to half full and stayed there until the next service. A fleet manager said all 1.9s did this and it was pointless trying to keep them topped up.

This seems to be happening with the Octy, got it back from service V. slightly over full it fell to half full within a few hundred miles and has stayed there for 3000.

Your fleet mangler was wrong then; my Xantia would have used more oil from checking the level every week than from what it burnt or leaked when filled to the top mark.
