106 GTi compared to Fabia VRS

Featured Replies

I picked up my 55 reg Fabia VRS on Friday to replace my 106 GTi as my daily drive. The Fiaba is remapped and has full leather interior. Overall impression of the car is that its great. So much better quality with a lot of nice little touches (lights come on when unlocking the car, one flick indicators etc). Little things like this when combined make a big difference of the overall quality and feel of the car. No rattles what so ever!

Comparion wise.. my GTi has at least 143BHP (when last RR’d a 4-2-1 manifold has been added since) has fully adjustable koni suspension, bigger breaks, induction kit and full exhaust. The GTi was great, handled amazingly reved high and had a lot of poke for a little car. In comparison the fabia has a great amount of torque for overtaking and some good grunt in the mid range. The handling isn’t great and really rolls around. I can’t take the corners on my favourite roads at the same confident speeds. The suspension is the first issue I’m going to address, the second are the breaks. They’re just about ok for normal driving but are horrendous when taking the car for a spirited drive inspiring no confidence at all.

I didn’t purchase the fabia to be a contender agains the GTi so overall am very happy with it. The new comfort levels and MPG are exactly as expected. The fabia in its near standard form is no hot hatch, more of a comfortable warm hatch. With that i’m happy. I’ll improve a few things along the way and will enjoy my next 3 years with the car.

hello...you will notice the fabia is rather "diferent" compaired to the gti. nothing that can't be tweaked though ;) get some coilovers and 312 mm brakes....or if you are changing your wheels brembo's look fantastic and also perform

Yup Vmaxx coilovers, RARB and 312mm are all on the way over the next couple of months. :) Can't wait!

i found the front top mount strut brace made a huge difference to my car aswell. i'll happilly push my car round bends as i've lost any bodyroll feeling at all now.

Ohhhhh Nooooooo!!!!!!!!

Here we go again.

Did you read my post? It was in comparison to my old car. NOT a VS thread.

I know but it will desend into bedlam by teatime.

Get a Jabba/ Whiteline rear ARB, 312MM brakes, front strut brace, suspension kit - it makes WORLD's of difference

Wont rise to it or encourage it mate.

Whiteline rear ARB seems the best bet. The Jabba seems quite overpriced for what it is.

Quite fancy some TT Comp's. They look really nice but still OE. They're also on the to do list.

LOVE the air con. Makes a huge difference in this weather. Does it have much of an impact on MPG?

A/C won,t affect your MPG much.Mine doesn,t.

Will sap about 5-6bhp though IIRC.

My whiteline has been great but some people have had rust issues - however Decron was replaced no questions asked when he contacted them.

Comps look gorgoeus but are heavy

I don't think he even contacted them they found him through this website and sorted him out,

Which is awesome customer service imo.:thumbup:

Are they. Hmm was thinking about putting spacers on too. That with some bigger breaks is really gonna increase the rotational mass and effect performance. Was also looking into some dotz alloys. Like the black spokes with polished lip. Will stand out nicely on my silver car.

One thing I have noticed is that the VRS can get the power down a little nicer than the GTi in certain situations because of its heaver front end. For example there is a round about with some lanes by mine. The turbo has spooled up just as I hit the corner and really powers me through the bend. Feels nice. The Gti would often spin a wheel at this point.

I like driving with the windows down too. The novelty of the turbo whine hasn't worn off yet :)

That's exactly what happened and yes it is. I wasn't going to bother but they just sent me a new one.

Read all the posts reviewing the differences. Make an informed choice ;)

Fair comparison. In performance terms, one you have the suspension and brakes sorted and a good map, there is no actual difference apart from the agility round tight stuff. There have been a few of those round here over the last couple of years (106 Gti's in various states of tune) and they are tough to shake off. Sad fact - thats what finally made me go for a hybrid turbo

Jabbasport - The ultimate ARB for VRS, and priced accordingly

Whiteline - Excellent £ for performance, adjustable, quality not up to jabbasport bar.

I thought I'd read somewhere on the TT forums that Comps were quite light!? That's what made me fancy some for my Golf.

I'd agree about the brakes as standard.

This is lesser known but seems to be significant and I've raised it with dealers myself after a very "near miss" at very low speeds well it was a hit actually, just no damage / insurance needed :o)

But many people have modded their brakes with the upgrades so this can be discounted

The body roll etc isnt anything new, Clarkson's infamous top gear review made this clear as day, unlike the weak brakes.

And its never intended to be a performance car on quite the same level as the GTI's. Its a diesel so the real rewards to be reaped are in economy as far as I see it.

Having never actually weighed one but lift a fair few I can verify they weigh a fooking tonne. Solid wheel though, never seen one buckle.

Comps (look good)

Leon R wheels (look better, still heavy though)

There is something good I think about buying VAG wheels though, the OEM+ look always suits the Skoda.

Both those wheels look really smart. Think chunky OEM VAG wheels definatly look better.

Seriously can't wait to get my suspension sorted. They look so much smarter lowerd.

Girlfriend borrowed the car last night! She really loved it. Got in today and she had the seat on it max hight and used a loads of my diesel the nutter!
